Is this Michigan football team similar to the 2002 NC OSU team with Clarett?

Submitted by ldevon1 on October 26th, 2021 at 9:37 AM

Maurice Clarett 11 games 222 att, 1237 yds with a 5.6 per carry av. 16 TD's

Lydell Ross 14 games 166 att, 619 yds 3.7 per carry

Craig Krenzel 148 comp, 249 att, 59.4 pct, 2110 yds 12TD's  7 int's

Defense was ranked #2 in total defense giving up only 13.1 pts per game.

I suspect our defense this year is being propped up by a series if very meh offenses. I don't think anyone on the schedule is really going to reveal that until OSU though

A little more alike than I originally thought. After doing a little research they had 9 players on the defense, both kickers, 4 wide receivers and their TE end up making it to the league. However, most of them were not high impact players.

We may have 10 defenders, 2 kickers, 4 receivers, a TE, a backup QB and some Offensive Lineman get at least a cup of coffee in the NFL. Their WR's were better and our OL is better. Defensively I give the edge to OSU, but this was not your modern day OSU juggernaut.

The biggest difference I see is that they had to gameplan and beat one elite team, Miami(YTM). We will need to beat OSU, the Big Ten West Champion, a Georgia and an Alabama to obtain the same goal and win the National Title.

That OSU defense was elite. Michigan's defense is good, but certainly not elite. McNamara is most likely a better passer than Krenzel, but Krenzel got so many key 1st downs with his legs, something McNamara is incapable of doing.

The only way these two teams are similar is that they both like to run the ball and ask their QBs to do very little in the passing game. That’s it unless you want to add that both teams have/had good FG kickers.

Clarett and Ross didn’t really split time like Haskins and Corum do. At the start of the season, Ross started because Clarett was a freshman and had to work his way into the lineup. Then it became obvious that Clarett was much better than Ross. Then Clarett got hurt and started to break down so Ross got more carries.

The QBs are/were also used differently. Krenzel ran a lot. He was the leading rusher in the championship game. For either team. He had 19 carries. Cade runs more or less never.

Michigans defense is fine. Much better than last year or was expected. But OSUs defense was an all time great defense with NFL players at virtually every position. Michigans defense is not that yet.

In conclusion, 2002 OSU was a great team that beat a Miami team that was being called the greatest team ever, were the defending national champs, and had won 33 games in a row.

Michigan 2021 has been fun but so far their best win is… 3-5 Nebraska, 4-3 Wisconsin, 3-4 Washington?

Let’s just try to stay grounded just a tiny little bit here.

Great points

we haven’t beaten a GOOD team yet!

people are acting like we are going to have a shot at the Big ten championship

we don’t realistically have a shot

Most likely best record at this point is 10-2 with losses to msu and osu which will suck but is progress from previous 2 years
