Michigan flavor to Loeffler’s BG staff
Hires include ex OC Terry Malone, Soup Campbell for Receivers and Kevin Tolbert at SC.
I do wonder who, if anyone, McElwain may take with him, even from the analyst ranks.

Pep with a bow on his cap! Please take him!
December 3rd, 2018 at 4:32 PM ^
Neg me, IDGAF, but the benefit of keeping Pep (assuming there's no one worth hiring), would be offensive continuity. The O was FAR better this year than last, albiet not where we want it yet.
December 3rd, 2018 at 7:03 PM ^
yeah I agree with you. It’s not Peps fault that our D didn’t show up against OSU, it’s not Peps fault that Don Brown refuses to run zone. It’s not Peps fault we had zero pass rush. Nobody was bitching when we hung 42 on Penn State or 38 on Wisconsin.
December 3rd, 2018 at 2:55 PM ^
I would think McElwain would have a lot more connections and "his guys" from his years at Florida than a 1 year stint here.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
The one thing I’d watch for, honestly, if JayBaugh. One of the indictments of Petrino this year was the number of relatives on his staff. Sean Snyder will not get the K-State job despite essentially running that program’s day to day for a while. I don’t think Jay is the equivalent of Jeff Bowden or Jay Paterno, but history does seem to indicate he may need to spread his wings outside the program to be taken seriously.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:25 PM ^
Anything but an OC/DC at CMU probably isn't a good move financially or career wise for him. If he does get offered that, he should definitely take it, and it would show how much people within the program really respect what he's done.
December 3rd, 2018 at 4:08 PM ^
I feel like Jay Baugh has been ok with Michigan but if he moves to a different job it would show that Harbaugh is serious about rebuilding the offense.
December 3rd, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
You realize he Jay has landed our top targets at TE two years. This year landed our top RB and has us right there with Crouch. We also have our first 1,000 yard back since Fitz. Jay has done an outstanding job.

There’s only one ball.
December 3rd, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
If I were Loeffler, I'd try to get Hoke on staff as DL coach. He can coach that position pretty well, and he knows Ohio for recruiting purposes.
I could understand if Brady turned it down, but I doubt he needs head coach money to live for the next few years.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
For all the easy jokes people will make adding Brady to that BG staff would be an excellent hire for Scott to make. But I'd probably look to him as the DC, not just the DL coach.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:09 PM ^
I agree with your first sentence. But I think Hoke showed his quality as a DC at Oregon pretty thoroughly, and I think he leaves much to be desired. Even at a school like CMU.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:12 PM ^
Too late. It's Carl Pelini (holdover from current staff).
Wonder what https://twitter.com/FauxPelini thinks of that?
December 3rd, 2018 at 4:18 PM ^
He sucked as a DC at Oregon. Jim Leavitt took over his duties the next year and Oregon defense vastly improved. That's a huge indictment on Hoke's ability to coordinate defense.
December 3rd, 2018 at 6:46 PM ^
When Will Carr joined the staff as a GA, he corrected Frank Clark's technique. That was while they had Hoke, Mattison and the guy who left to coach at Oklahoma on the staff. I think there are better options out there for DL coach.
December 3rd, 2018 at 7:34 PM ^
Hoke was already a successful head coach in the MAC, and I believe it was at BG. Could have been somewhere else, long time ago. I doubt he'd take a position coach spot there, now. Good idea, though!
December 3rd, 2018 at 7:38 PM ^
It was at Ball State.
December 4th, 2018 at 7:04 AM ^
With Soup and Malone joining the staff, this seems like a labor of love and wouldn't be in it for the money. Same would go for BH I imagine.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
Soup Campbell. That takes me back. There was a time when people wanted to offer the sun and moon to get him back to Michigan as WR coach.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:17 PM ^
Still do.

Jerry over here just wants to get the old squad back together.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
FWIW, his top two receivers this year at Delaware averaged 19.7 and 17.1 yards per catch.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:27 PM ^
Would like to have seen soup back here
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
We're still waiting for the first good offense Loeffler has ever been associated with as an OC or HC, so Bowling Green seems to have really nailed a winner.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:47 PM ^
True, but Loeffler has improved B.C.'s total offense from the bottom of the FBS to middle of the pack, which is something.

Loefller's offense at BC in S&P rankings
2018: 95
2017: 101
2016: 124
Sure, they improved but they're still awful. Loefller has not shown the ability to put together good offense
December 3rd, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Once he got an NFL tailback and could run up numbers on G5 and FCS teams.
December 3rd, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
I think the rb who first committed to us may have had something to do with it as opposed to loefflers many years of sucking. Wish we still had him but love charbonnet
December 3rd, 2018 at 7:35 PM ^
People said the same when BG hired Dave Clawson immediately after he bombed out as the Tennessee OC. All he did was build a program from the ashes and win the conference. At one point during his run, nearly half of all scholarship players were freshmen - the cupboard was that empty when he started.
HC and OC are very different responsibilities. Loeffler has shown ability to build and improve, most notably at BC. He took over a historically inept offense and made them respectable. BG is a dumpster fire right now. In a lot of ways, the hire makes sense.

Respectable? BC offense is hot trash
December 4th, 2018 at 7:40 AM ^
95 compared to 130 when he showed up at BC? Yes that is respectable. Clearly trending the right direction and built something from ashes. Considering the hot mess that is Bowling Green football after three years of utterly incompetent leadership, someone who built from the ashes makes sense.
December 4th, 2018 at 9:13 AM ^
In 3rd year, you expect the offense to be middling instead of hot trash which BC offense has been in his entire tenure. Loefller has not shown the ability to coordinate good offense and it's a bad hire by BGSU.
December 3rd, 2018 at 11:19 PM ^
Since they found their last guy via Google, I’m fairly sure this search was a more thorough one. And they’ve made good hires before, including Dave Clawson and Dino Babers back to back.
December 3rd, 2018 at 3:52 PM ^
This will not end well
December 3rd, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^
Let me add something here... had Bo and Lloyd allowed Harbaugh to coach QBs over Loeffler, there is a good chance this lost decade, and our current predicament, wouldn't exist. Yeah, yeah... I know that I'm making alot of forward assumptions such as Lloyd promoting Jim.... but shit, do you all realize... Harbaugh almost coached MSU after getting turned down here.....

Terry Malone is a good coach and a better person.
Was solid with our NC team and with the Saints when they won the Super Bowl. Best of luck to Loeffler, Malone, Soup and Tolbert.
