Glad to see that they didn't punish us for not playing. Other notable teams:

  • #7 Ohio State (up from 13)
  • #8 Iowa (down from 7)
  • #9 Oklahoma (up from 24; Not big ten but significant jump)
  • #12 Illinois (up from 19)
  • #19 Wisconsin (down from 14)
  • #24 Purdue (no change)
  • Others receiving votes: Minnesota, Toledo, Rutgers

Those are some huge jumps... yet when we were throttling teams, we'd inch down a spot at a time...  Oklahoma 24 to 9 is ridiculous.  so is OSU 13 to 7

Oklahoma's rise is probably a product of beating two top 10 teams in a single week. Huge rise but deserves respect I suppose. They play their third top 15 team in a row this week with #13 Texas Tech and then have another gauntlet with #2 Baylor, #17 WV, and #6 Texas. Will be pretty clear if their success is a fluke or sustainable.

I don't get the Ohio State jump. They barely beat Penn St. and then beat up a bad MSU team

OU is a good team but KU has turned into a pretty bad team, Texas was without Smart due to COVID-19, and I feel like Alabama is a bit overrated because the SEC just isn't that good of a basketball conference.  Absolutely they should have risen but the little I've seen of OU doesn't scream top-10 team.  Like, I think Iowa runs them off the court if they played, and yet they're paired up in the rankings.

OSU getting the bump is even more inexplicable; I guess they're getting some residual benefit from MSU's name + PSU getting the win against Wisconsin.

We were 19-12 last season and lost our starting PG and C.  Predictably, we began this season unranked.

Then we had no notable non-conference wins, as our only good non-con game (NC State) was cancelled.

As soon as we started winning Big Ten games we shot up the rankings and have been in the top 10 for a month now.

Even Mork D'antoni would struggle to find disrespekt in this.

Of course, noted Michigan skeptic Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News has Michigan at 7, while everyone else has Michigan ranked from 3-5. Then again, at least Michigan has a very tight range.

Voters put Texas anywhere from 4 to 14, and Iowa ranges from 5 to 16.

Aside from Gonzaga and Baylor (both ranked either 1 or 2), Michigan and Villanova have the tightest voting spread, with rankings of either 3, 4, 5, or 7. Curiously (but also inconsequentially), nobody ranked Michigan or Villanova 6th.

Thus ends my random over-examination of AP voting trends.
