Michigan BB targeting '11 Larry Nance Jr.

Rivals Senior Editor Chris Balas reports

Another '11 target to emerge, Richfield (Ohio) Revere coaches confirmed today - 6-7 forward Larry Nance, Jr., son of the former NBA great with the same name. Nance has offers from Toledo and other mid-majors but is hearing from Michigan, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Kent State and others.

Nance has grown six inches in the last two years, according to reports, averages 18 points and 10 rebounds per game and has reportedly improved dramatically since last season.

"It is almost scary how similar Junior's game is to his father's," the Examiner reported. "Nance relies on a nice touch out to about 18 feet, has tremendous leaping ability, and is a terror on the defensive end on the glass and blocking shots.

I hope somehow he comes to Michigan, so the NBA names can continue.

Two seasons from now the roster will have NBA names such as Hardaway Jr., Horford, Dumars, Glenn Robinson, and hopefully Nance Jr.

Who knows though, Daugherty might steer his son towards NASCAR (no pun intended).  Of course we would have to hope that his son didn't inherit his back problems.  I'll definitely take anything associated with Mark Price's gene pool, considering he was my idol.  We should also check if Hot Rod and Terrell Brandon have sons.....Hopefully we stay away from Ehlo.....

This is one of the benefits of having a coach who is straight as a Grizzlies dick. You get the upper hand with guys who come from well-to-do families.

He's actually supposed to be a very fringey prospect. It seemed like UMHoops thought it may be a preferred walk-on situation.

...of Dylan's recent discussion of 2011 recruiting is that Beilein will give his last scholarship to either Nance or Max Bielfeldt, a 6-8 235 late bloomer from Peoria (also from a wealthy background, but not an NBA kid). This passage from a hometown Bielfeldt profile piece supports that:

...the new leader in the clubhouse seems to be Michigan, which had Bielfeldt on campus for an official visit in late January. The Wolverines have not yet offered a scholarship, but coach John Beilein is supposed to watch an upcoming ND game and an offer could be forthcoming. During his visit, Bielfeldt said he was told it is down to him and another player for Michigan’s remaining scholarship in the Class of 2011. He also said: “They said I might play as a freshman because they need a 4 (power forward).’’

Both Nance and Bielfeldt are really tough calls to make. Scholalrships are at a premium. We can certainly use the help and I for one would be thrilled to add one more player to the 2011 class. However, these two guys are completely under the radar. They are not ranked nationally and there are little if any scout evaluations on them. In the end though I think we need to trust Coach Beilein and the staff. They know how to evaluate talent. If they see enough in this kid to merit an offer then so be it. The situation is similar to our recruitment of Novak and Douglas (two completely under the radar guys who have panned out well for us).

One last note, as we all know Michigan's recruiting fortunes have fallen off a cliff in comparison to our '90's  hey day. The plain truth of it is these days very few McDonalds all americans give us the time of day. As a result we have to dig deeper and find kids who are flying under the radar and/or late bloomers such as Nance. The way to bring back the blue chip talent to A2 is to win games with less talent for the time being. If this Nance kid grows another 3 inches look out!

I've almost got to disagree...While Beilein started out with under the radar types(Stu and Zack)  recruiting has improved considerably when you look at Morris and Hardaway.  Then you look at Brindidge and Burke...I've seen some recent video on Nance, and when you consider that Beilein is considering NOT giving a scholarship to this kid...Now that is a testament to how far recruiting has come.

I agree that our recruiting has gotten better (particularly in the guard/wing spots). But we're still nowhere near the same level we were in the 90's when 5 star blue chip recruits consistently listed us on their short lists.

Hardaway, ES, Burke, and Brundrige are all fine recruits but they are all just below elite level (ala Webber, Traylor, Tayolor, Rose etc) we had become accustomed to. Beilein's biggest challenge has to be attracting top caliber low post talent because he's got to fight the stigma of the finesse Princeton offense that our recruiting counterparts consistently use against him.

Dont get me wrong. Things are most definitely getting better and the future looks very bright. But we still have a ways to go in terms of reviving the recruiting talent pipeline that was the lifeblood of our program during teh 80's and 90's. In that sense, identifying diamonds in the rough such as Nance (note: I'm making one hell of an assumption here) will be key as we try to reclaim our rightful spot atop the Big Ten.

Baby steps...
