Michigan 2021 Football Transfers

Submitted by scfanblue on March 11th, 2021 at 1:58 PM

I found it interesting that only three Michigan players at this point have found a new home with another team who wanted them. The rest of the players are still in the portal without any offers unless someone has heard something else. Joe Milton, Will Hart, and all defensive players ( a bunch of ILB's) are still not offered with the exception of VanSumeran going to MSU. Lots of the QB transfers have already been picked up.

#1- Zach Charbonnet- UCLA

#2- Zach Carpenter- Indiana

#3- Ben VanSumeran MSU

Other dudes might have offers (and I'm sure some do) but we just don't know.

You're also missing Villain and Turner who are headed to Wake Forest.

I would assume Milton ends up somewhere in Florida probably FAU, USF, UCF, maybe even FSU if they don’t think Chubba Purdy is ready  after McKenzie Milton leaves.

I would imagine that lots of pickups occur after spring practice when you see what your team looks like amd where the holes are.   I am guessing you give your walkon punters a chance before picking one up in the portal

Oof. In addition to missing names of a few players who have announced destinations, you also don't know what players have been offered transfer spots.

This does NOT mean the other players have had no offers. I'm sure most of them have. All it means is that they haven't committed yet.

As others have noted many of the UM transfers HAVE found new homes.  (The portal tracker on 247 is useful - not sure if Rivals has something similar)

Big picture on the portal from what I have seen.

--- Hundreds of players already in or through the portal with the assumption that many more will join as Spring camps are completed.  == Teams may want to see who comes on the market before "settling" for a player they do not love.

-- Also (I believe) Transfers will count against the 85 player cap since they are "new" players to the team they join - even if they are 5th or 6th year with the extended Covid elegibility - so there will be space limitations for many teams.  To add to this in the B1G I believe that the total number of new players added to a teams still maxxed at 25 per year (with some backdating allowed).

-- There may be many players that do not find a new home via the portal.  I am not sure what happens if they try to return to their old school - technically they are still at their old school while in the portal just available for other teams to contact.

For M -- The 2 you mention are the most notable but explainable imo.  Miton probably wants assurances he will get a chance to start and probably doesn't want to drop too far in level to keep maximum NFL exposure.  Hart -- I doubt a team is going to "spend" a scholarship on a specialist until they have all their other holes filled first.  As for the rest -- I see some walkons and 3 LBs that put very little on film at M.  They may be very good but their are kids with similar profiles - and higher HS rankings - filtering out of 'Bama etc. (see Ben Davis LB) that are not getting snapped up immediately either.

I wish the best for all of them - except BVS when he plays against M - and hope they all find good fits.

Umm..

Shibley- ND

McCaffery- Northern Colorado

Villain/Turner- Wake Forest

Besides, no one knows what "offers" any of the rest have, and its not even the middle of March yet. Spring Ball will help some guys make decisions and some guys will figure it out after they graduate.

Never have I felt so removed from my UM football fandom until this offseason. Not even the transfer market or spring practice bits are engaging to me. Yikes...

This is one of those 'see, we stink and this (bad, poorly aggregated) bit of anecdotal data proves it' garbage posts that we really could do without here. These are all kids who worked hard to succeed and who I wish the very best, starting with Joe Milton, and they're all going to be playing somewhere come fall. Let's have a little more respect.

I'm certain Milton will end up a a mid major Florida school like USF, FAU, FIU or even UCF.  He's a graduate so one of those schools will need his graduate major.

Good luck to all of them, it’s like free agency in sports and coaches come and go too, so the players should have the freedom as well.
