Michigan 2013 Instate recruiting
Having seen the offers we've given out on the soon to be wiki, it is surprising to see so many offers outside of Michigan.
So far - I counted 4 in the 65 odd offers we've given out.
Shane Morris (MICH commit)
Wyatt Shallman
Steve Elmer (ND commit)
Jourdan Lewis
Is Michigan's talent pool shallow next year?
Also- is it just me who is bitter about Steve Elmer? We could sure have used his talent next year (which generally seems a weak year for OL in the country)
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:15 AM ^
Elmer was always going to go to Notre Dame. And Michigan's talent pool is not nearly as deep as it was this past year.
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:34 AM ^
when you're rooting for the other team in an atmosphere of 115k, your mind is clearly made up on where you want to go. It sucks but it will hurt a lot less if we get LTT.
P.S. I replied to your comment to specifically tell you that I love your photo and "The devil and god.." is the best album Brand New has made.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:10 AM ^
That is a great album, but what about Deja Entendu? I think that one is my favorite.
February 3rd, 2012 at 10:39 AM ^
Deja was good for what it was, but IMO, Brand New took a HUGE step forward creatively with Devil and God. The lyrical content alone is incredible - while they've always been personal (even self-depricating, almost to a fault), Devil and God definitely was just more grown-up.
That said, I was emensly dissatisfied with Daisy.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:16 AM ^
If we miss on Diamond and Kozan(which seems possible), then LTT becomes priority #1 for next year.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:22 AM ^
Lt3 seems more and more like a solid chance. Kid is ridiculous, but west coast has some strong kids in 2013. Mich has some late bloomers usually so wait and see.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:24 AM ^
There are other great prospects in the midwest as well. I would add guys like Bosch and Pocic to our priority list.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:27 AM ^
seems like Texas has a boat load of high-end OL prospects. Hopefully we can snag some of them.
Also - I'd really like to see our recruiting finish strong in IL/ PA/ MD this year. Those states are deep and of course OH (we've given out 15 offers in OH already)
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:46 AM ^
Speaking as a reformed Texan, I do not trust O-Linemen from Texas. The style of play in Texas gives the advantage to the offense and athleticism. I find them to play with very little grit compared to linemen from other areas (mainly the Midwest, as that's what I have to compare). I think that level of competition leads them to be overrated. But who knows, I haven't seen these specific candidates. I just harbor that abiding suspicion.
But if you disagree, fine. As a rule it's still exceptionally difficult to pry top level talent out of Texas and bring them this far north.

He was at UTL and found himself pulling for ND. That's some true love right there. Best of luck to him, except against us and in bowl games.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:20 AM ^
That Denard to Roy kicked his nuts in
February 3rd, 2012 at 8:52 AM ^
Thank you for posting that little gem this morning. I NEVER get tired of that clip....so much so that the avatar just looked up at me (she was at the game too btw) and asked "are you watching that AGAIN?"
I think my favorite part (and it's all good) is when not 5 seconds after the line "he's a poor thrower" he goes quiet and then says in the lowest voice possible "Michigan is going to score....I don't believe it".
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM ^
Seems like Westwood's production mutes the crowd noise. Sounds like 115,000 golf-claps in the background.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:11 AM ^
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:04 AM ^
The full audio is awesome...the before and after of that clip from Michigan scoring to ND scoring to Michigan scoring again, and all the debate and angst after it, it's worth it.

That'll go down as one of the all time great nights.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:57 PM ^
Best part is the dufus B. Musberger calling out Denard as a poor passer, then 30 seconds later saying, "I don't believe this but Michigan is going to score."
Go Blue Wolverines!
Musberger........go blow!
February 3rd, 2012 at 2:41 PM ^
It's even in the video title.
February 3rd, 2012 at 4:10 PM ^
That's not Musburger, it's the ND audio stream

It sounds like recruiting in the state of Michigan is going to be great at the top (Shane, Elmer, Shallman, Lewis, Reschke, Riley Norman, a few others) and then not that great after that. So based on the 4 you listed, that's a good start this early.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:27 AM ^
Michigan is not very deep for 2013, but is top heavy. It is too bad Norman and Reschke are considered Sparty leans.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:45 AM ^
that said i dont think that Reschke and Norman are any better than Kalis, Magnuson, or hopefully Diamond from this year. I think Braden was very underrated may be better than either of these '13 guys as well.
That said, I'm glad we got our OL numbers this year. LTT will be an outstanding prospect, and hopefully we add a couple nore next year too.
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:25 AM ^
Reschke is a OLB/DE prospect, not o-line
February 3rd, 2012 at 7:35 AM ^
Reschke yet to my knowledge, which is disappointing. I really like that kid and think he would be a very reliable LB...hopefully we can get him an offer and get him on campus because I really don't want him chasing down Shane in the near future.
February 3rd, 2012 at 9:27 AM ^
So Reschke has had a lot of practice chasing down Shane already...
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM ^
With the LB haul we have had, I dont think taking that many is likely this year...We have to keep things in perspective, so my question is do you want instate Reschke or the other possibilities of Michael Hutchings, Ben Gedeon, EJ Levenberry, Jaylon Smith, or Peter Kalambayi...just to name a few
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:21 AM ^
Please, I beg of you, no more recruiting talk. I can't take it.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:21 AM ^
As much as we'd all love to have Elmer in the class, he's about as solid as you can get to ND, same way as Shane/Dymonte are to us. The talent in state is quite thin, but it's still worthwhile to pick up a few if we can maintain relationships and pipelines.
Ohio again is as stacked as ever so we're gonna do some cherry picking there.
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:54 AM ^
Instead of doing some cherry picking in the State of Ohio, let's put a fence there and make Ohio try to cherry pick from their own state.
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:59 AM ^
I was pretty embittered that Elmer didn't even give UM so much as a whiff but jumped at ND and of all people Brian Vesuvius Kelly. Not to mention I live in Midland and can't stand the thought of someone from my community actually wanting to go to ND.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:26 AM ^
I don't understand any player commiting to Notre Dame. And this is not just Michigan bias. I mean if you are a 4* to 5* OL recruit really concerned about education like Garnett you look at Michigan, Stanford, maybe Wisconsin. Because from a football standpoint ND has been irrelevant for 25 years.
And worst of all, are you that self loathing that you want to play for a vitriol spewing purple maniac?
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:34 AM ^
I don't get it either, but they have tradition and the NBC thing. Also it must be a big deal for Catholic families if that is what they are looking for. From what I heard, the Elmer family are serious Catholics.
February 3rd, 2012 at 7:53 AM ^
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:37 AM ^
Steve is anti-michigan, plain and simple. I don't think he's ever cheered for michigan ever in his life. He grew up a michigan state fan, but wants the academics of notre dame. Some kids just don't like U of M, and for that you can't blame them!
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:07 AM ^
Not even 20 years but I get your point.
February 3rd, 2012 at 8:55 AM ^
I hate ND as much as anyone, but it is a great school, a beautiful campus, is near a great city, has a great alumni network, its own tv network-what part is hard to understand? I hate them, but every domer I have come to know personally I really like. They remind me of us.

February 3rd, 2012 at 10:07 AM ^
I think South Bend is a dump. I disliked their fans all 3 times I went there.
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:38 AM ^
I too am bitter about Elmer. Would have been great to get him in Maize and Blue. Apparently Ann Arbor was too liberal for him.
February 3rd, 2012 at 2:57 AM ^
with the too liberal thing

Too Liberal: Code for too many homosexuals.
February 3rd, 2012 at 1:26 AM ^
How can you be bitter about a kid, going to the school he rooted for? Would it have been nice to get him? sure, but there is plenty of talent on the OL we are looking at.
February 3rd, 2012 at 2:07 AM ^
how is Dantonio going to get the #1 kid in-state?
Oh wai,t I am sure he will find one service that has one of his two "locks" listed as #1
February 3rd, 2012 at 3:40 AM ^
Hole is found a fantastic job, BUT we cannot continue to loose out one the #1 player in the State at each position moving forward. We already lost Burbridge, Elmer, O Brien, etc. Reason I say this is we will need to finish off Michigan strong every yr and go heads up with "Liar" down south w all the Ohio kids. Burbridge kills me seeing as we have the #1 QB next yr coming in and the O line w be sick.....The fact Elmer shunned us already that's a tuff pill to swallow as well.

I'm looking forward to a top 10 class next yr as well... Go Blue!
February 3rd, 2012 at 3:52 AM ^
I am not bitter about this year's in state recruiting even if we lost on Burbridge - because MI was deep and we did phenomenally well in keeping most talent.
However, with Steve Elmer I was disappointed because
1) Plays in position of need
2) Local Kid in shallow talent year
3) Committed THIS early to another school
Yes I understand kid has supported ND all his life and I am not mad at him for choosing ND. Just disappointed at the whole situation
February 3rd, 2012 at 12:50 PM ^
I'd rather he chose ND 15 months before national signing day instead of stringing us along and leaving us without a viable backup plan.
February 3rd, 2012 at 2:34 PM ^
Why are you disappointed? What else do you expect coach to do?
February 3rd, 2012 at 4:28 AM ^
Just... I mean... come on, man. I'm astounded by your stupidity.
February 3rd, 2012 at 7:41 AM ^
What the hell are you talking about? We pulled almost every top recruit in the state this year.
February 3rd, 2012 at 8:12 AM ^
I pray this is sarcasm. Please, Angry Michigan Illiteracy Hating God, let this be sarcasm...
