Michael Barrett Appreciation Thread

Submitted by waittilnextyear on November 15th, 2023 at 12:20 AM

I was reading a partial transcription of Coach Harbaugh's Tuesday evening radio interview from earlier today's "Inside Michigan Football" on Maize n Brew, and I came across this beauty:

In addition to pointing out the team would be going for win No. 1,000 this weekend, Harbaugh pointed out it’s actually a current player, linebacker Mike Barrett, who has played in more wins (56) than any player in the history of the Michigan program.

Fitting.

Michael Barrett, the winningest player in the history of the winningest team in American football, per Coach Harbaugh.  Let that marinate for a few seconds.

Barrett was not a 5* recruit, not a glamour recruit.  He played through the COVID year and he even had his original position (VIPER) eliminated with the sacking of Don Brown.  And yet, the young man just keeps finding ways to be useful.  The team, the team, the team.  Barrett bulked up and he's now arguably the team's most instinctual linebacker (all due respect to Junior Colson and Ernest Hausmann, who are both fine linebackers in their own right).  If that weren't enough, Barrett is already a legend on MGoBlog, spawning a whole subgenre of Chuck Norris-esque humor focused on Barrett being a true renaissance man.

So, while the team is making turtle soup in College Park this Saturday, let's recognize the greatness of this storied program and its drive for 1K (and keep our fingers crossed for a victory over the B1G in court as well).  Let's also remember and enjoy the fine and industrious career of Michael "Mike" Barrett (and innumerable other "glue guys" of Barrett's ilk who've donned the winged helmet for teams of the past).

There's an appreciation thread about a guy who was recruited for a role that was eliminated, so found himself as a backup, but  persevered  and reinvented himself to become a leader, a team captain, who will wind up with more wins than anyone else in the programs 144 year history and .....

the first response is an insult.

Honestly maybe we dont have him pilot the team flights. I know you all will downvote this but even though he is a talented pilot maybe he should focus more on upcoming games?

Damn it I dont know if a team has ever had more character than this squad right here. Love these guys!

I could be the totally wrong, but it looked like Mike was the guy who totally ruined PSU's swinging gate 2pt gimmick. You could see him directing everyone and pointing at the center so everyone knew the C was an eligible receiver. Then he basically spied Allar to take away passing lanes while not allowing him to scramble for the 2. That was a huge pre-snap read and play by Mike.

Throw Sainristil in with him as well, as two guys who were needed to unselfishly turn their backs on their original roles with the team, didn't sulk, but instead embraced the team's needs, putting others before themselves, excelled and became leaders in their new roles, each turning in iconic moments as leaders and players to live forever in Wolverine lore.

Mike and Mikey: Two Jolly Good Fellows!

Also, there was that time last summer that Mike protected us from the bear that strayed into our campsite in the middle of the night.  Terrifying ordeal until Mike showed up out of seemingly nowhere. I almost felt bad for the bear...almost.  Thanks, Mike.

He said hello to my son from the field during an early season 4th quarter blowout, I always liked the man for his football skills and mindset, but that made him one of my favorite players ever. Seems like a great teammate and true Michigan Man!

Mike seems to save our bacon 4 or 5 times a game. He's not just big and physical, but very smart. A genuine leader of the team.

I'd like to see him add 5 more wins to that amaizing total.

Go Blue!

And yet, the young man just keeps finding ways to be useful.

I recall an OP a couple years ago where the author was legitimately arguing for Barrett to be our QB.  We had QB issues at the time and since Barrett "played some QB in high school", we was qualified.  Pretty sure this opinion was blown up by the regulars here.

Congrats Mike!

While his stats don't jump off the page this guy has been the ultimate Swiss army knife and leader since he arrived. On top of a pick six and all his defensive numbers he has converted 3 fake punts (one on a 25 yd pass) and averages 31.5 yd per kick return on 4 returns including a 66 yarder. The man is everywhere.

I love Mike Barrett, he has been everything we needed at times, he has thrown the ball, made game-changing tackles, and interceptions, plus he was the one responsible for creating the internet. Truly a Michigan man!

Thanks for the post. Inspirational. The anti- portal player.  Or… has been through the portal and back without anyone knowing? Does he transport like Captain Kirk? It’s Barrett anything is possible.
