MGoBlog in the Workplace

Submitted by Raback Omaba on
Yes, maybe I take Michigan Football too seriously and personally, but the past two years - which I refer to as "The Storm," have really taken a lot out of me emotionally. This week has been the worst. The media frenzy of The Storm this week has been especially bad, even worse than last year's Michigan - OSU game. I'm emotionally tired, getting into heated arguments with all my Michigan/RichRod hating friends, and just plain exhausted. So, as a post to take the edge off, I'd like to find out how everyone uses MGoBlog at work. I consider myself a high performer, hard working guy and pretty talented and good at what I do. But.....I go on to MGoBlog waaaay too much at work. Waaay too much. I can't help it. I recently earned my own office, which makes it worse since the privacy is there and I'm not looking over my shoulder every five minutes. Let's put it this way, I probably check MGoBlog 5-6 times during the workday. Additionally, since God was great and invented the I-Phone, my bathroom breaks are extra long because much of my MGoBlog fix is fulfilled in a bathroom stall while taking a shit looking at my I-Phone. No Joke. Additionally, I have caught myself checking Mgoblog while driving on the freeway (I ceased this practice immediately.) I can't help to think how much more productive my life would be if MGoBlog didn't exist....because controlling these urges is impossible. While it hasn't become a problem and effected my productivity (or at least noticeably), I sometimes think how much better I'd perform if I didn't read MGoBlog so god damn much.....and weeks like this make me really notice that I have a problem. I discussed this with a friend of mine, who has the same problem. Would anyone like to share their addiction stories? Step up Bob Saget! P.S. I have yet to perform perform fellatio for the opportunity to log on to MGoBlog, but at this rate, who knows where I'm headed. Go Blue...Beat the Buckeyes.

Yeah I hear you on the work day stuff. I just open mgoblog at the beginning of the day and hit refresh probably 6 or 7 times a day atleast. I have a cool boss though and as long as I get my shit done he doesnt care.

And the op hit the nail on the head. I was nodding the whole way through, and yes, the trips to the John are a good 10 minutes. Now, let's write a fairy-tale ending to this season!

Brian grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change; COURAGE to change the things I can; and WISDOM to know the difference. It is an addiction. My lunch hour is spent at my desk on MGoBlog, and it's the best lunch date ever. Please don't tell my wife.

I work out of the house, and when I perform a site visit or a service call, I find myself logging on for just the latest posts. It's addicting. Maybe we should 12 step our way off of the blog, I don't think so.

I understand where you guys are coming from, my co-workers tell me I'm obsessed with Michigan football and Michigan football recruiting. I work in I.T. and while working on PCs I have some time to peruse the internet. The only sites I seem to look at MGoBlog and GoBlueWolverine. The ridiculous comments from the national media and some local radio people make me want to strangle someone. I can't wait for Saturday. Last year I paced my living room for four quarters. This year, I will be there. It's going to be a great day. Lots odf recruits, a lot on the line and a stadium full of emotion. Let's get it on. GO BLUE

I am with you. The only good (bad?) thing is that my iPhone doesn't get reception in the bathroom. But...I have my own office, so it's just me and my conscience. Which means I go on this damn site, legitimately 10-12 times a day during the workday in the fall. And days where there's a UFR, I read the whole damn thing and watch the videos. I imagine I spend an extra 40 minutes a day at work because of reading MGoBlog during the day (I go home when my work is done). Whatever- Totally worth it. Oh, and I also recently came in to work and they had put whiteboards up in every office. I have no idea why- it's a law firm, not an engineering or design firm or anything where I can really use a whiteboard. . . I decided it must be a canvas for my personal artwork. Thus, the only thing on mine? Diagrams of the zone read and zone read veer plays. I am considering adding zone read counter (the pass where Koger comes across the formation after the snap)... I think when it is b-ball season, I'll diagram some Beilein 1-3-1 and some offensive plays as well. Any thoughts or websites I can go to to find good examples? The football ones were easy to find. . . not sure about b-ball.

If he gave you more interesting assignments, you wouldn't be so easily distracted. At least, that's my take. Also,if you weren't checking this site, you'd find something else to check. Pretty sure that surfing the web at work is pretty normal.

I busted up reading this, I thought I was in the minority doing this at work but maybe not. My damn cube is situated so that anyone who walks past can see my screen unless I tilt it, so needless to say the screen spends a good part of the day like that so I can feed my MGoBlog addiction. I thought that this would only be a problem at college during midterms and finals, but apparently my ADD lies with real actual work too. Oh well, what you can do.

This is exceptionally tough for me. I work in a newsroom (NOT the Freep or DetNews), which is basically a wide open space with desks scattered about. My desk is in a corner, and I face the wall - i.e., I cannot see anybody come up behind me, and anyone can see what's on my computer screen. There have been sooo many times when an editor's walked up behind me while I'm reading MGoBlog or watching a football video or something. Thank God all my editors are sports fans, otherwise I would've gotten canned a while ago.

10-12 times a day? That's nothing, I check it 30-40 times a day. Yes, my job can get very boring sometimes. What's worse is that I live in a completely different time zone than the US. So my work begins when it's 11:30 pm in the US. Since I've already read all the front-page posts the night before, I'm stuck with the forum all morning. In other words, keep up the interesting posts!

Good call on the crapper. I find myself using soap to wipe off the outside of the iPhone once i'm finished with the business. Here's a good tip for everyone, particularly folks worried about your company monitoring your internet activity (like I do!) Subscribe to both the RSS feeds for MGoBlog and MGoBoard. Check up on the diaries after work. That way you’re never too far away. If you find a topic interesting enough to add or read comment, you're only on for that small amount of time, not all day.

Not so much in the workplace, much more in the classroom. Im currently a student and have far too many boring lectures than I would like to. Therefore, I ease my boredom by bringing my computer to class and checking out mgoblog constantly. This may or may not be the reason why I find myself first learning about things when I am studying them for an exam. In any case, I can't stop and if my grades suffer for it, ill still have mgoblog.

Wow. It is going to be hard reading posts from now on without thinking everyone is on the toilet.... Imagery is a dangerous thing. I do check the blog regularly throughout the day at work. Gives me a little break from the chaos with a little Michigan fix. Then all is right with the world...

I'm in exactly the same boat. I check at least 8-9 times a day plus I'll spend 10 minutes at a time perusing the boards, replying to a post, etc. I also read UFR's from start to finish. I'm waiting for the day I get nailed for my MGoObsession.

I am in total agreement with the OP and everyone on this thread. I think I am friends with the guys in my IT department otherwise I probably would have lost my job already. Who knows they may be building up a case against me. I am still really paranoid about it though.

i'm on here for a good portion of the day in between items on my daily chore list that i get from my wife.... but when i was working i had to be careful. my cube was in between the elevators and both of the executive directors offices, plus my GM supervisors cube was right next to mine. my direct boss always told us to stay off of the net as much as possilbe since we weren't GM employees (my entire group was contract). so my mgoblog time was at lunch and in the morning before i left for work.

I have a mac and a pc at work. I do development for the web, so I have lots of different browsers between both operating systems. IE, firefox, safari, chrome; MGoBlog is the most frequented site on all of them. Even on my iPhone, I saved a shortcut to the site on my homescreen. It's a good thing that I am stuck at a dead-end job. Without this site, I would go insane. Thanks Brian.
