META: MGoBlog Traffic Story

Submitted by DCGrad on

Hi all,

I was curious to see what kind of traffic our MGoBlog received on a monthly basis so I went to similarweb.com (full URL included below) and saw some interesting observations.

1. Average 1.7M views per month, that seems like a lot. There was a big dip in February, probably signalling a decline in the basketball program.

2. About 94% of traffic comes from the U.S. (no surprise) but the other top getters are Japan, Germany, Canada, and Costa Rica. Building a global audience!

3. The average duration of a visit was about 3 mins with about 2 pages being viewed in that time.

4. It is just outside the top 40,000 for U.S. websites. I say we try to break that threshold!

5. 78% of the visits were direct (typing MGoBlog.com into your browser) and 12 % were referrals.

Here is where it gets interesting

6. The top referral website, with 19% of all referrals is...RCMB! The second is corvetteforum.com followed by the Michigan 247 site, ESPN, and motown sports.

7. The top destination sites from MGoBlog are Youtube (mostly highlights I'm sure), twitter, ESPN, vegasinsider, and mlive.

3. The average duration of a visit was about 3 mins with about 2 pages being viewed in that time.

So basically, MGoBlog has almost exactly the same user behavior as every porn site on the planet? It would be really weird if you had added, "...about 3 mins with about 2 pages being viewed in that time, followed immediately by the user reaching for a few sheets of paper towel..."

Having seen the metrics on some few sites, you'd be surprised how little time the average person spends on a site.  This is not facebook for most people.  2 minutes is very common.  Also keep in mind when people come to the site by mistake they bring down any sites average so you have the 2 and 4 seconds etc out there.  Not that that is a massive mover for this size of site but it affects smaller sites.

But just in general people don't stay in 1 place long.

I actually don't think February was a dip. I think it will turn out that the story is that March was a spike, due to the basketball team's success. Other thing to note is that this is "total visits" and February has 3 less days than either January or March.

I would imagine that April/May/June will be similar or below February levels.

Most shocking thing to me is that November had less site visits than either October or December.

What defines a "visit"?

I just log on in the morning and leave it on in the background until the evening, checking in on it every now and then.

Is that just one "visit"?  If so, it's a pretty damn long one.

None of this 2 minute stuff for me.

"There was a big dip in February, probably signalling a decline in the basketball program."

I haven't looked at the dates, but my guess is that correlation is directly related to NSD and recruiting as opposed to Basketball.

wonder what the distribution is around the visit duration.  I feel like there is a core group of "power users," but I know there are a big number of casual, but regular, viewers.  My 78-year old Mom, for one.

Well, MSU fans do love MGoBlog, so that is no surprise. Plus, visiting this site gives them a chance to get away from that wasteland called RCMB for a while. I'd want to visit other sites, too, if that were my best source for MSU content.

Corvetteforum.com gives MGoBlog the 2nd highest number of referrals? How many of you out there are in that long thread about the compression ratio on the LS6 in your 1971 Vette? It has to be a shit ton of MGoBloggers in that thread then.

Some of you LOSERS spend way, way too much time here.  It's pretty apparent to me that you guys either have no life or no sense of balance in your life.  Either way - those posters who are seemingly always here and in every thread really need to re-evaluate their life priorities.  No telling what somebody who's obbessed with this place might do in real life.

Good thing for them I'm here to keep an eye on things.

I'm on this site at least 10 times a day and usually look around for 10-15 minutes each time. Now that I type that out, it seems like a lot. Nah I'm ok with it.
