Meta: The ads are taking over

Submitted by VikingDiet on July 6th, 2019 at 10:20 AM

Is anyone else having this issue? It is not isolated to one page, seems to be happening all over.

Yes, the ads are getting a bit annoying. But Brian deserves to make a butt ton of money for providing such ridiculously good content without ever charging us a penny.

I agree. Brian deserves a good living for creating something people get to read at no cost. That said, if given the opportunity, I would gladly pay a reasonable fee the receive the content without all the ads.

By far, the greatest advance in on-line sports content, IMO, is The Athletic. For under 10 dollars a month I get more content than I can possibly consume with no ads at all. It's like getting an old fashioned Sunday Sports page everyday for 40 different markets plus national coverage. And podcasts. I realize I'm fortunate I can drop $100 or so a year on this but I can and I do. Gladly.

There seems to be a bug - at least for me - on my Apple devices.  The comments ARE there but below a large swath of empty space between the comment bar and the actual comments. (Took me a while to figure that one out last night.

Yes, posted about this yesterday morning inside the "Juwan Howard minke NCAA Violatik" thread.  Thanks for making a thread.  I noticed that the site was down beforehand, and it did not seem consistent at least not at first.

I don't begrudge Brian from monetizing but hopefully they can improve it somehow, seems a bit much for my liking.

We were promised an App, how about a paid one without ads?  Seems like a great idea.  But we were promised a lot.

Sorry that's just not the way I operate. This site was the one that convinced me to put Ublock Origins on my phone browser. I buy the book and I usually toss a donation at least once per year elsewise, but I object to having my browsing experience ruined so I can be sold shit I don't need or want.

I got in a taxi in Korea a while ago that had a screen built into the back of the front seat showing ads a foot from my face. Drove me fucking nuts. This was also a day I had been on my phone too much and made the decision that I wasn't going to use it for anything frivolous the rest of the night.

I see your point, but how hard would it be to create an app that allows customers to pay for an ad-free experience?  I’d pay for it.

Doesn’t Brian hold a BS and MS from UM in computer engineering or something?

If he’s too lazy he could just pay someone to build an app and 3. Profit

A choice would be nice, that’s all.

Yeah, the mobile "experience" is becoming a pretty bad one. The entire UI is littered with ads.

It's been brought up over the years that many readers would gladly pay a small subscription fee and I would say with the proliferation of ads since 3.0 launched, that stance has probably has not changed.

Gotta agree big time with you. Had 4 different ads between your OP and the first comment on the thread from my phone. Not to mention the annoying overhang banner on the phone that covers the menu unless you click the little arrow. While I don’t blame the desire for more ads to get some more income especially when not charging anything, but at some point too many ads really hinders the ability to follow the message board and in turn, lowers the value of it for some.

It’s definitely annoying, but considering we’re not paying Brian a penny for reading his content, I’d say this is a small price to pay. No pun intended.

<sarcasm>Though I know it doesn't work on all platforms, they do make something called an AD BLOCKER. Give it a try. But, Brian provides something you immensely enjoy for FREE so suck it up. If not, you are always welcome to go to the other popular and free Michigan message board, Gobluemichiganwolverine. </sarcasm>

Or, install ad blocker that removes the annoyance, but unfortunately hurts Brian's wallet.  It seems that's what quite a few are doing.

It really seems like it would be in the blogs best interest to offer a free site as it is today, and a subscription model without ads.  Best of both worlds.

Meh this is the best Michigan content on the internet and it’s free. I’m happy to cruise past some ads if it gives Brian & Co the revenue it needs to keep doing what they do.

It’s HORRIBLE! This is the reason most people I talk w here don’t log in or even come to the board anymore. I can not believe how many ads are here and even in between the threads and comments. It’s completely out of control.

Have you looked at those Tecovas  boots? Nice boots! If I didn't have two in parochial school and one in college I'd be looking at a pair of those.

I hate all ads, commercials, sunsets, walks on the beach, fresh air, puppies, children laughing and playing on my lawn. There are worse things than ads on a blog that gives us info we couldn't get elsewhere with so little effort. You will be ok
