Had not seen this posted yet and I just stumbled on it randomly, so figured it was worth sharing. If you're eager for basketball content, here's a recording of their open scrimmage.

MAIZE VS. BLUE | Watch Michigan Basketball Open Scrimmage Before 2023-24 Season

I only just started watching, so no analysis or even preliminary thoughts to share, but I'll at least mention that I just saw Tray Jackson hit a three, so that seems good.

Watched about 8 minutes before realizing I should go to bed. A couple thoughts...

  • Not great that they can't even go 5 on 5 in practice without having a walk on play
  • It's a shame that they couldn't figure out how to get Isaiah Barnes functional. They could use someone of that shape on this team
  • Khayat looked encouraging
  • Burnett's defensive rebounding was nice to see
  • Williams and Tschetter still feel like pieces that don't really have a natural spot
  • This is probably the season to go full Craig Ross and run a 6 or 7 man rotation and just hope it works
    • Dug, Burnett, Jackson, Reed, Khayat, Nkamhoua, then one of Washington or Llewellyn

You already know Cheddar Bill will get some tick along with TWill, much to my dismay...TWill better come off the bench if he does play! I hope Llewellyn plays with confidence this year, he could back up Dug and Burnett but if he doesn't drive to the rim with authority and look to score or dish then he is essentially unplayable because his shooting is not consistent enough.

That wasn't my takeaway at all.

First of all Nimari did hit some shots and showed terrific athleticism both on and off ball..   GWIII looked like he can play.   ON looked like the solid player we hope him to be.   Dug was Dug (a good thing.   Taris looks in shape and is a load underneath.   Jackson looked like the player from his highlight reel.

Some positive takeaways in advance of a season that I think will surprise the naysayers.

God bless you for being optimistic....but IMO this team will be lucky to be .500....its a bottom of big ten team.

Only watched the first part when I posted as it was pretty bad, but then watched the rest...

T.Jackson, Dug, Reed Yo-Yo looked decent...Twill looked his usual..bad...Nimari made 2 shots of about 12+ or so he took and most were wide open or short shots...he did not look good on offense...especially as it was a scrimmage and the D wasn't really going full bore....

There is such a lack of athleticism (and talent)on the team that they are going to get destroyed a bunch this year...think ASU game last year.

Just cannot see how they compete with 1 undersized guard and no wings in the college game...

Coaching staff will have to experiment quite a bit with lineups, kind of an awkward group of players. Can Khayat play the 2 in some matchups? Who will spell Reed at center? Can Llewellyn come back and make perimeter shots? Is Washington ready enough to play early to get his much needed shooting on the floor? Best lineup (decent defense, mediocre offense) would seem to be:

1: McDaniel (Burnett, Llewellyn)

2: Burnett (Llewellyn, Washington)

3: Jackson (Khayat, Howard)

4: Nkamhoua (Williams, Tschetter)

5: Reed (Nkamhoua)

Llewellyn will probably play more off-guard with Dug and Burnett playing most PG minutes. Hopefully Khayat proves to be a shotmaker and Nkamhoua is serviceable playing the 5 part-time since Jackson isn't really according to Seton Hall fans. Hard to envision even being in the bubble conversation, but I think there is enough talent to get a couple nice upset wins at least in what will probably be a .500 at best season.

For rotation purposes, I still think we get a lot of Williams at the 3. He averaged 27 mpg last year.

Allowing 2 of Reed, Jackson, and Nkamhoua to be on the floor at all times.

There are 80 mpg between those two positions...split that evenly and that's 26.7 mpg for each of those guys. Reed isn't going to play too much more (let's give him 28 mpg, 30 mpg for Jackson, and 32 mpg for Nkamhoua)...that's 10 mpg with all 3 on the floor at the same time.

Meaning someone has to fill that extra 30 minutes available at the 3.

FWIW...it's the same thing at the guard spots. 80 minutes and you have McDaniel, Llewellyn, and Burnett. Again that 26.7 mpg for each (if McDaniel is 34, Burnett is 32, and Llewellyn is 28 mpg...that's 14 mpg with all 3 on the floor).

So now you're down to 16 extra minutes available. That would go to Williams.

That's a 7 man rotation, which isn't deep enough and I think that's too many minutes for several of these players...that's where Khayat and Howard peel off time for themselves. I think you can take 6-8 minutes from the post threesome (Khayat) and 6-8 minutes from the guard threesome (Howard).

...And that's rotation.

Maybe not a star this season but maybe quite a good player?

At the scrimmage he showed a shot with a quick release.  He looked fast and was serviceable on defense.   He looked like a guy who knows he is competing for playing time and wants that playing time.

Yo-yo will surprise you.
