MBB: Cole Huff visit schedule; Michigan still involved

Submitted by Raoul on

There seems to be a bit more clarity today concerning Cole Huff, the 6-8 sophomore forward transferring from Nevada (who would have to sit out 2014-15 and have two years of eligibility after that). According to his former AAU coach, Clint Parks, Michigan will be in today to see him, so there's still Michigan interest in him. The question now is: Will Huff take a trip to Ann Arbor?

He has three visits scheduled:

  • April 27: Creighton
  • May 2: Iowa
  • May 9: Dayton

Vanderbilt is another school involved; they visited him in Reno over the weekend. From what Parks tweeted yesterday, Huff will also visit Vanderbilt, although no date has been set. Parks has said nothing about UCLA recently, so I have no idea where Huff stands with them (CaliUMfan has said UCLA would be the favorite if they offered). But it would seem like Michigan is in position to be a fifth school that Huff visits.

Side note on Aubrey Dawkins: His official visit to Dayton will begin this evening and run through Thursday (source).

Bingo.

We have a coaching staff on par with Ohio.  Excellent player development.  Put players in the NBA in the 1st round.  Win Big 10 championships now.  Go deep in the tourney (parallel is top end bowl games annually).

We cannot put any of THOSE things on par with Ohio in football right now.  But we can in basketball so don't be EMO even in a sarcastic sense.  And that is from a guy who is massively EMO on our football program.

Here's the tweet in which Clint Parks noted the visit from Michigan:

UM Hoops is reporting that LaVall Jordan is the coach heading out to meet with Huff.

Given his noted ADHD, he probably took the exam in a separate room and was given extra time.  I have a few friends with ADHD that do this for every exam so I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Mitch was.

The "take the first one to commit" scenario doesn't make sense here. Dawkins is likely to make his decision very soon, presumably later this week or over the weekend. Huff is taking visits into early May—well after Dawkins will have made his choice. It's possible Michigan is pursuing Huff in case Dawkins picks someone else, and they still have that open scholarship. This may have nothing to do with McGary, so I don't think anyone should start panicking.

Why Erik?

You do the groundwork on Huff and in a week you either have a scholarship for him or you don't.  Mitch can make a decision any time this week through Sunday.  If Mitch leaves you can take both.   If Mitch doesn't leave, Beilien will decided if he wants the bird in hand if Dawkins wants to come.  If Dawkings chooses his long time suitor Dayton it is moot.

Doesn't sound like Huff is making a decision in 72 hours.  No need to stop working the recruiting trail in the meantime, waiting on Mitch.

Yeah its tough.  The losses are a lot if he goes.  Honestly I think with Mitch-Donnal-Irvin-Caris-Walton Jr starting group we compete for the Big 10 title again (starting 5 is as good or better than Wisconsin's - the bench is weaker) and that's a sweet 16 type team with Spike, Chatman and TBD as the 8th man (Doyle/Bielfeldt).

If Mitch goes, well it's a tough road.... Mitch is just such a swing factor.  Preparing myself for the worse mentally.

His dad told me today that LaVall Jordan is in Nevada working out Cole. I talked up what coach Jordan has done with guards at Michigan and he kept saying he liked what he was hearing. Thats really all I can add at this point. I want to be somewhat carefull about what I share.

Thanks for the updates.

Just curious have you met the son ever?  If so what is his personality like?  And if not what is the dad like?  I mean just in general without specific details but do they seem down to earth types etc.  I assume the son is the unselfish, down to earth type because this seems ot be the type of cat the bball team goes after on top of skill.

I have never met Cole but his dad is a good man. Cole's dad is the parent co-ordinator at our school and I am a teacher (meaning we don't really work "together" just at the same school). Our relationship is basically just that we like to talk basketball because I played high school ball in L.A. (Upland) and so did his son (Cambell Hall). I fractured my knee cap playing with students a few weeks ago and was out for a week after surgery. Roger (Cole's dad) called me while I was out just to see how I was doing. That's just the kind of guy he is. I've never met Cole but I would guess judging by his father that he is the kind of upstanding kid we would be proud to have on the roster.

If you want to believe that previous poster's post about UM only being interested if McGary is gone...well then, time to start dusting off the ol' Panic and Run Around Screaming shirts.  Dust them off from, like, 15 minutes ago.

But that's under the assumption that Hatch still has a regular scholarship correct?  I think the coaches also have that in the back of their minds too in this situation, as if he gets a medical hardship waiver (or whatever it's called), they would have an additional scholarship to give.

Michigan has an additional scholarship this year (due to Horford transferring). So he would be using that scholarship and by the 2015-2016 season, it is a safe bet either McGary, LaVert, Walton or Irvin will leave.

Hatch doesn't need to be placed on a medical hardship and people who say it is inevitable don't realize that Belien gave him his word he wouldn't and if you are placed on a hardship, you CAN'T COME BACK. It's like being on the IR in pro's except its forever, not just a season.

1.  I was posting under the belief that a transferring player took up an athletic scholarship and simply couldn't play.  I just read an NCAA publication about transfers, though, that states a player cannot receive an athletic scholarship at all, so apparently Huff would not count against the '14-'15 count.

2. Michigan does not have room to add two players who will be on scholarship for '14-'15 if McGary stays and Hatch is on an athletic scholarship.  Again, though, Huff seemingly wouldn't count against '14-'15.

3. It isn't crazy or mean to think Hatch may realize at any give point that he cannot and will not play basketball at a D1 level.  I very much hope he can, but he is also (last we knew) very far away from that goal.

Where did you read that you can't be on an athletic scholarship during the year after you transfer? I'm nearly certain that's wrong. There's no way there would be as many transfers as there are if the players didn't immediately go on scholarship at their new school. And that scholarship does count against the 13-scholly limit. It's no different from a player who sits out a year as a redshirt.

Bottom line: Michigan has one open scholarship for 2014-15 right now. And Dawkins and Huff are two possibilities to fill that spot.

Ya that rumor reeks of Trey Burke's "Dorm Gate" but I am not overly optimistic on the McGary front.

The silence feels like the quiet before hte storm.

UM is recruiting a few guys and will continue until they reach a limit. Doubt it has to do with McGary. Could miss out on Dawkins, too. UM would have 2 spots open.

No mention of Vanderbilt, and USC gets mentioned here, not UCLA. Have no idea what "restrictions" he's referring to, as word had been that he was free to transfer to USC.

I cannot imagine anyone could not come away from a face to face with our staff vastly more interested than just watching us on TV - these are impressive people with an impressive resume to "brag about" now.
