...a medical exemption scholarship for situations like this.
Kid gets hurt in between commiting and signing day give him a year to rehab without his scholarship counting against the 82 limit after that year he can join the team and count against the limit, go full medical or transfer without sitting a year.
NCAA, nearly a century of making it hard to get an education for athletes!

Yeah but how many teams would start to use that as a recruiting loophole?
No room in the recruiting class? Oh wow you "rolled your ankle" son, here's a one year scholarship that doesn't count against us and keeps you from someone else. You'll still be able to be with the team and "rehab" and learn everything else, and we PROMISE you'll be really on the team next year...

Which makes me remember I was suppossed to mention that all medical exemption diagnosis' would need to come from a neutral doctoer hired by the NCAA.
Sorry we had discussed it earlier and I was assuming it.

Nice idea, but this unfortunately would be subject to a ton of abuse. Alabama would probably stockpile an entire JV team full of "medical exemptions" if they could get away with giving them all scholarships that did not count toward the 82 limit.

To be clear:
1) Medical exemptions detirimined by independent medical staff
2) Special exemption for "qualified" commits

How is this an example of the NCAA making it hard for an athlete to get an education?
He could take the medical, and still get a free-ride to the University of Michigan and get an education, despite not having to do some of the thing his peers have to do to get the same free education.
November 15th, 2015 at 7:35 PM ^
....D'oh, I guess it was the same thing twice.
November 15th, 2015 at 7:28 PM ^
......to "take the medical" ends the chance at him ever playing football at UofM, where as if he has an independently verified injury that threatens his career he could get his freshman year started, rehab and then have the choice to continue to play or not.
The most obvious benefit would be for the players that have mild concussion type injuries that would greatly benefit from a year off from football activities.
Not to mention, if you give a kid a year to explore "playing school" at his favorite university, he may actually learn to value the education more than the opportunity to "go Pro"; which I think, is the whole point of intercollegiate sports, to convince people of the value of education.
Or making a shitload of $$$$....one or the other.

It sucks but I agree with what Harbaugh did. To be successful you can't always be Mr. nice guy. I really hope we end up with Walker. We are in DIRE need of a game changing RB. We haven't had one since Hart.

From his quote when he was first offered a medical scholarship it was pretty clear he wasn't going to take it.

Definitely saw this coming. Best of luck to him going forward.

I wonder who will offer him?

Several teams have reportedly contacted him. Not exactly a who's-who of teams, but Wisconsin was one of them.

I know he is 18, but his Tweet SMACKS of Entitlement. If what has been written is true, and that Michigan/Harbaugh gave him options to a) get healthy and not play for Southfield or b) get a free full ride medical scholarshiip.... then he is just another Pipkins using the internet to unfairly criticize Michigan.
Yippie Ki Yay Mr. Falcon.

Not sure about his family situation financially but maybe a PWO for year 1 and if it goes well he can earn a scholarship? Maybe a transfer after a year or two?
Sad to see him lose out on his dream, but should have listened to the medical advice.
