Massey Rating: UM #1 by a Country Mile

Submitted by JHumich on November 28th, 2023 at 11:40 PM

I like to check in on the Massey ratings once a week. It seemed especially significant to me today, as I was annoyed that the CFP still somehow had Georgia at #1.

The computers (and they are legion) have Michigan as an overwhelming #1. Only a couple of them even had us as low as 3. Georgia's line is littered with 4s, 5s, and worse. Even a 9. I like what that implies. I hope you enjoy perusing the chart as well.

Go Blue. Beat Iowa. One day at a time, we'll turn them all into 1s.

Fuck Georgia. A bunch of rednecks running around barking at each other. Hitting them with a rolled up newspaper or rubbing their noses in their pee/poop is the only way to deal with their fans.

It's a very popular multicultural gathering point for Atlanta. I don't think as many people that actually live here are offended by it, at least to the point they would want to blow it up. Anyway, that amount of explosives should be sent to Athens instead. That would do a better job addressing your actual underlying concerns.

Hard to take these things serious when James Madison is in the top 20.  Sure, they've had a great season for who they are.  So has Liberty (composite ranking 22), but does anyone really believe those schools are going to beat Clemson, Utah, UCLA, Kentucky, Wisconsin, whom they are ranked well above?

If these rankings are supposed to predict who is more likely to win a head to head game (and if that isn't the point of ranking teams then what is?), I just can't take them seriously when they rank a team from the Sun Belt or WAC or MAC that highly, unless they have some Marquee out of conference wins.

If the computers say so then it is so. And anyone who has any interest in not being turned into lubricating oil in the future would be wise to agree with the computers also.

At this point, ratings literally don't matter.  Win the games.  That's it.  Win the B1G.  Win the Semifinal. Win the Final.

If you want to be the 'champions', then beat everyone else.

Does seeding matter?  Not to the champions.

Some others I found interesting:

Little brother ranges from 65 to 114, with a composite of 82.

Iowa ranges from 11 to 45 with a composite of 20.

Missouri's outliers are 9s, (where the CFP ridiculously has them) and 20 (almost as likely) with a mode of 13 (then 15, then 14, all of which are way more appropriate than 9).

Somehow Liberty has a 5. But also an 86.

Troy has a 4 (from one of the few that ranked us 3!)

TCU has a 25. And also an 84.

I'd bet the players on the top teams do want to play Michigan. As our guys like to say in interviews, that's why they came to Michigan. Other schools' athletes want to prove themselves in big games, too; they're no different.

Why did several Michigan stars come back this year when they could have had a more highly rewarded existence in the NFL? Because they're competitors who cared about their legacy and are willing to play anyone in their way.

I give these young competitors a lot of respect. Most people will never have the cojones or will to do the things they do to prepare, play, and make the most of their talent.

It's the fanbases who don't want to play tough games because their favorite team might lose. The players on top teams live for the spotlight and the big games.

So how do Massey Ratings stack up with the true outcomes of any given season? Are they generally accurate prognostications of the playoffs?

These are interesting numbers, but I'm dumb and was distracted by how primitive the site looked: like an old GeoCities or a 90's Myspace page.

Two of the AIs STILL have OSU at 1. Wtf???

I guess those two computer models gave less weight to actual results on the field and more weight to toughness and recruiting stars.

Somewhere on the site you can check the accuracy of each model.  Massey was average earlier in the year.  The best ones are rather close with very little variance.  Been following Sagarin for 40 years.  I also like McCormick, Kirkpatrick, and Fleming.  Does anyone know if Ashburn has been renamed?  It was my favorite as it had an extensive page for each team.

These models provide little help for bowl prediction pools.

Anyone have a link to the information that was on Football Outsiders?

Michigan is #1 in the country in basically every metric right now and has the best resume, yet we aren't #1 in the CFP because... reasons. Not to mention the CFP committee has done their classic schtick of leaving a bunch of undeserving SEC teams ranked in the teens despite them having like 3+ losses
