With Martin Commitment Michigan Moves Up To #3 In Scouts Recruiting Team Rankings

Submitted by MichiganStan on

I know the compsite rankings are generally held in higher regard but I thought this was pretty cool. We're only 6 points behind Alabama. Strong finish may be able to take the #2 spot

1. Georgia (4,883)

2. Alabama (4,675)

3. Michigan (4,669)

4. Ohio State (4,490)

5. Oklahoma (4,464)

Nothing changed. They still have ridiculous classes. Scout's ranking system obviously puts more emphasis on class size. Bama and OSU have ridiculous high end talent coming in. Georgia has been on an incredible run as well. Just to put it in perspective, I'm pretty sure that even if we landed Solomon, Gay, and Collins, we'd still only finish 4th in the 247 rankings. And we already have a really good class. If we even land two of those guys I'd imagine it'd be the highest ranked Michigan class of the online recruiting era. And that just shows how well the other 3 have done as well.

You're correct that OSU and Bama are a step above the rest.  However, it is easier to have a higher avg rating with a lower # of recruits.  For instance the average of our current top 20 (size of OSU's class) is 92.77.  Should we get Solomon and Collins as expected that jumps to 93.50.  Obviously it is ideal to have both quantity and quality, but bringing in additional players doesn't diminish the talent of the top 20 either.

Completely agree that Bama and OSU are head and shoulders above the rest. With Georgia, I think we would have been higher if Isaiah Wilson had gone blue instead of to GA. SMH.

OSU has a historic class, cmon guy...

Their AVERAGE guy is a 95 which equates to the 100th best player in the country... Rashan Gary was a 100 for perspective, DPJ 99.

We average 91, and this is going to be up there with 2013 as our best class on paper in ranking classes era.  They have 3 guys below 91... 1 being a kicker.

It also seems to me that not all 5 stars are created equal in terms of position groups. Totally a guess here, but my bet is certain groups can be projected more reliably than others. So a recruiting class w a gaggle of 5 star linebackers and wide receivers is different than one with a bunch of 5 star OL prospects. Our 2013 class was heavily reliant on high rated kids who came from position groups difficult to project.

if you only take the top recruits for our class and compare that with OSU and Alabama.  So, if OSU has 20 guys, we take the average of our top 20 guys and see where that lands us. I don't think we will be near the 95 number, but it should help better compare the two classes.

Michigans class has incredible potential. Once you get up in this range, it's about development and the eye of the coaches to identify guys that will fit and develop with what they want to do. Splitting hairs over stars is a waste of time at this point. We knew Alabama and Ohio State would continue to recruit athletes. It comes down to Solomon now. If Michigan gets him, the combination of this year and last year's class gives Michigan depth and star potential at every level on both sides of the ball for the next few years. No weakness in any position group. Also if you have a QB that can pass and use the entire field, you always have a chance against teams even if they have talent advantages across the board elsewhere. If Harbaugh is the QB whisperer that people think he is, Michigan will have a leg up in the passing game against the other elite schools...especially with these receivers. I'll take that in any level of football. When people do these class analysis, they seem to forget about that. A star passing QB is worth more than a handful of 5* athletes at other positions on game day.

To put in perspective how things could have or would have played out with Scout.....

  • Soloman is their #11 recruit, which is higher than anyone Michigan has in their cass right now (DPJ = #22).  Getting him would certainly boost us further.
  • Willie Gay is their #51 recruit, which would be our highest ranked recruit besides DPJ or Soloman in the class.  (Ambry Thomas = #56)
  • Isaih Wilson is #42.  I do think the Michigan coaches thought they had him up until the end when he surprised with the Georgia pick.  For us he'd be one of our top 3 recruits.  For Georgia he is also their 3rd as they hold the #25 and #28 guys also.
  • Tedarell Slaton is #31 somewhat to my surprised.  I never really thought he was ranked high enough to be one of our best recruits.
  • Austin Jackson, who I wish we had a chance at, is #30.
  • Jay Tufele is also way up there at #36.

While it does feel like a crawl to the finish at times, we still have a chance to get two recruits this week that would be our #1 and #3 ranked players in the class according to Scout.  And as for catching some of the other big-boy classes,  you can see with that list how close we came to being right there with them.

meh

As long as they get good players they want to fill key positions. Class rankings don't mean that much, especially when in the top five. There is not much difference between each team's class.

Not that anyone really cares, but has anyone been following sparty's recruits? Just wondering how their class is turning out. Obviously they're not going to be making huge waves nationally, but I'd assume that in the B1G their class would probably rank somewhere in the 3-9 range, no?

They have four four-stars on the composite (WR Hunter Rison, G Kevin Jarvis, TE Matt Dotson, and LB Antjuan Simmons) and a bunch of three-stars. Jarvis, at #224, is the only player in the national top 250. Overall, their class is ranked 31st in the country and 6th in the B1G.

It's a definite step back from the 2016 class, when MSU was 17th in the country and 3rd in the B1G, with eight guys in the top 250 and ten four-stars. But it's more or less in line with their 2011-2015 classes.

I'm just so happy that we have coaches who can develop talent. This year will be a step back but not as big as a lot of folks think. Harbaugh and Co. are gonna get these kids ready to ball.
