From the story:

"University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel will leave his post one year before his contract expires, the school announced Tuesday. That means his tenure will draw to an end no later than 2023.The school's Board of Regents, which has been deeply divided in recent months over Schlissel's performance, will immediately launch a national search for his replacement. It's unclear what will happen if the board finds a suitable replacement before 2023."

You know, I got to meet him and interview him for one of my MBA classes (it was supposed to revolve around his time at Domino's), and he was friendly enough and approachable, but I sure wouldn't want to have him running anything I loved or cared about.

Everybody on my team joked afterward about how hard we were biting our tongues -- at least those of us who had been Michigan fans before attending Ross.

As we emerge from a historic global pandemic, now is an important time to strategically consider the future of @UMich. To ensure a smooth & thoughtful leadership transition, today I am announcing I will end my service as president in June 2023. https://t.co/8PKIzAAs2n pic.twitter.com/tvePnm1G8u

So what's the deal with him?  Why is he so unpopular?  He was hired after I graduated and moved away, and I've been very disconnected with UM campus life and the university outside of the major sports programs. He seemed like he was well qualified and when I heard him speak he come across as very thoughtful and deliberate.  Of course that kind of surface stuff doesn't always speak to actual leadership.  What whet down?

He was a great hire on paper and said all the right things at the time, but that was literally it. He didn't really do much tangible shit after getting rid of Brandon which was a no-brainer at the time. Then you add on the controversies w/ the departmental sexual assault stuff, leaked emails, COVID etc... yeah writing was on the wall.

He did raise UM's academic profile on all the rankings lists which is nice, but how hard is that when half of those lists are just amalgamations of endowments and "donations" from a bunch of privileged schools around the globe.

Genuinely interested in hearing more. What leaked emails? The sexual assault stuff and Covid was either before his time or a pandemic, so I guess this is in regard to the responses to those things.

I know the city of Ann Arbor had some grumblers who wanted UM to be 100% remote, but I don't think you can find any U president who had a positive approval rating with their covid response. You'll have strong opinions across the board.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to hear more  about a divided board. Who was divided and in what way? Because Ron Weiser seems like the guy that the community would love to ride out of town, but he's an elected official. It makes me wonder if divided simply means he's one way or the other against all other regents.

Anyone with some knowledge if the situation care to share what the issues with Schlissel have been?  Can't say I've kept track of the inner workings of the University.

Current Ivy league presidents include two former UM provosts and one former UM president. The pipeline is suppose to run the other way.

The UM job is a meat grinder. At an Ivy, your have to keep the alumni happy, oh and the alumni generally have a lot more affection and loyalty to the school. At Michigan you have to please athletic boosters, right wing know nothing legislators, left wing activists on campus, alumni, parents, and students who are as divided as the general population, and elected regents who generally are party insiders who were lucky enough to get nominated in a good year for their party. (and if you think UM's Board is a difficult bunch to work with look at MSU's.)

Schlissel should have wacked Brandon and Hoke no later than when the 1am press release went out after the Morris injury situation. I think that symbolized his indecisiveness towards dealing with difficult situations.

With COVID, last fall was supposed to be a 'public health informed' semester. It was not. It was trying to split the difference between open-up crowd and the anti-covid crowd, but you can't split the difference between fantasy and reality. The vaccine requirement for 2021 was a good call.

Ron Weiser still on the Regents is a travesty.

I’m going to try to touch upon what could be a political topic without being political, because this is relevant, and I have some direct knowledge here:

A large number of Jewish alumni have been very vocal about what they perceive as Schlissel and the university being overly tolerant of anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, pro-BDS sentiment from members of the faculty and student groups. A number of prominent donors in this group have requested to meet with Schlissel in-person and have been rebuffed, receiving stock responses from those lower in the university administration. Some of the donors have been 6 and 7 figure donors for years and were irate.

I’m not presenting an opinion one way or the other on the underlying issue, but I will say that I’ve personally seen the many letters to Schlissel and responses. And I’m not saying that this was the reason that he is leaving, but this has been an issue for the past 2+ years and only recently came to a head when some of the more prominent donors raised their concerns with others outside of the university administration.

>pro-BDS sentiment from members of the faculty and student groups.

I'm sorry, what? And what do 'these groups' expect Schlissel to do about student activism...shut them down? Run surveillance groups? Isn't Schlissel Jewish himself?

You're right, you shouldn't have brought it up because not only is it a touchy/political subject it what you're suggesting has major implications that would make this a national story.

Per the comment above of....

A number of prominent donors in this group have requested to meet with Schlissel in-person and have been rebuffed, receiving stock responses from those lower in the university administration.

He could have handled the situation better with these donors by at least meeting / calling these folks as opposed to just saying I'm to busy for you so my minions will deal with you.
