Manningham Predictions

Submitted by BlueNote on
With recent attrition at the wide receiver spot for the New York Giants, Manningham promises to be one of the featured receivers during the upcoming season. It looks like Hixon and Smith will start, but the there's a starting spot open. Predictions on whether he'll start this year, and how he'll do overall?

Always a fan of any NFL team that has a Michigan Alum as a starter. It is a bad situation, but if Manningham can get his chance and shine then I hope he does. -UMichGA

The new city contemplating a condemnation, The bird of prey offers itself to the heavens. After victory pardon to the captives, Manning and Manningham will have suffered great evils.

it seems he's got to work his tail off to get some PT there... I still can't believe he failed his drug test at the combine. That's the most important day for any football player in their life, and he couldn't lay off the pot for 30 days? I wonder how many millions of dollars that particular "bag" actually cost him? I hope the Giants watch some film, and figure out that you can just let him go deep and he's money. He was one of the better deep threats we've had at UM. What about Arrington? Is he still on the Saints? He's also got tons of competetion, and I always thought his build and physicality would bode well in the pros... Any news on him?

he'll get to 1000 yards - 22 guys did that last year, but probably not double-digit TDs. Only 7 guys got there last year, so he'd have to basically be an all-pro, which I think is a bit of a stretch for the year. I do agree that he'll be good, but I'm not sure if he'll be that good just yet... and this all assumes he'll actually be a featured WR in the offense this year.

something tells me he's not going to pan out, not that I don't want him too, but the Giants drafted that Nicks guy from NC in the 1st round and then drafted another WR again in the 3rd. 2 of their first 4 picks were WR's.

As a Giants fan, I'd like to see Manningham contribute. But, as a Giants fan, I'm pretty certain that Manningham is going into camp #4 on the depth chart, at best. Steve Smith is entrenched as the possession receiver, and Hixon has played adequately as a deep threat. They drafted Hakeem Nicks from UNC with their #1 pick, and then Ramses Barden - a 6'6" guy who ran a 4.4 at the combine. He's a project, so I'd say Manningham probably starts above him. The Giants really want a bigger receiver - since Smith is 5'11". Unfortunately, Manningham is also 5'11". Nicks is 6'2". Throw in the fact that when Burress went down, Manningham still only climbed to 4th on the depth chart (behind Smith, Hixon, and Sinorice Moss), I'd say it's not looking good.

Yes, watch out for Hakeem Nicks. He scored 21 of UNC's 30 points in the thriller against WVU in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. He is a monster. Steve Smith and Hixon, as you said, are pretty firmly 1 and 2. But Manningham was injured for part of last year, so hopefully he can get in the rotation as he battles for the 3rd receiver position against Moss and the two rookies. It should be one of the more interesting receiver battles to watch in the NFL this year, as the Giants really beefed up their depth chart at that position.

I just think that as long as Smith is one of the starting WR's (and he's probably the most entrenched of the group), Manningham is going to have to show himself to be heads over heels better than the others, as I think the odds of the Giants trotting to sub-6 footers on the field are slim. This is a front office that signed Burress because of his size, and went into the draft with the state goal of "drafting a big WR". Nicks isn't a giant, but he's at least over six foot. Also, the Giants really need a deep-threat out there. As I said, they really like Smith as a possession receiver, but he's more Manning's security blanket than anything else. Manningham just isn't very fast - he was good deep in college because of his double-move, but I wonder if NFL corners will be so easily duped. He's orders of magnitude slower than Hixon and Hicks. It's like he has the speed of Jason Avant without his hands or size. This Ramses kid intrigues me. He could be a complete monster.
