MAC Admits to Bad Targeting Call and Still Making Player Miss a Half
This is so stupid. Free Willie!
The Mid-American Conference has announced an officiating mistake.
With 4:07 left in the third quarter, Central Michigan defensive back Willie Reid made a tackle on Western Michigan wide receiver Jaylen Hall – after he made a catch for 15 yards.
Reid was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on the tackle. However, after further review of the play, officials ejected him from the game for targeting, claiming he used the crown of his helmet to make contact with the crown of Hall's helmet.
Even though the conference admitted the mistake, Reid will still be disqualified from playing in the first half against Eastern Michigan.

Sorry, not sorry.

That’s even worse.

I'm still pissed about this.

What a terrible evening that was. Was watching the game live, I'll never forget how impressed I was with how Galarraga handled the whole situation from beginning to end. There is also an image of Miggy with his hands behind his head a look of "What in the actual fuck?!" on his face that I remember.

miggy was part of the problem. as he often did, he ranged way too far into the hole which was a routine grounder to the 2B, forcing galarraga to cover first.

So it was Cabrera's fault the umpire utterly blew such a simple, routine ground out? GTFO... The throw beat the runner by a full step. That call is 100%, irreversibly, squarely on the first base umpire.

Screw the record books---Armando Galarraga was perfect that night.

Jim Joyce. How in hell did you miss that call? I wonder if that was the play that put replay rules into effect for MLB.
October 3rd, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
How the hell does he error on the side of ruining a perfect game? I’ll never understand that.

Some people just like to watch the world burn.

This. For fuck sakes.
October 3rd, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
That was HORRIBLE!!! I still can't understand how he blew it that badly!!
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Jim Joyce and Don Denkinger had the 2 worst calls in baseball history.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:55 PM ^
I don't understand how the other umpires could not confer with him and change the call. Joyce himself knew he botched it immediately. I mean, no one would have blamed them if they got together, over ruled him, and changed it to an out. It was a traveshamockery!
October 4th, 2019 at 2:18 PM ^
Jim had something against the Tigers that day. I can't think of any other reason on a bang bang play for a perfect game to call him safe.
October 3rd, 2019 at 8:27 PM ^
They only admitted the mistake. They will never reverse the call.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
And see, that becomes unethical. When you admit you were wrong, you have more than just an obligation to say "Sorry." You need to remedy the mistake if you can, otherwise "sorry" means nothing.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:31 PM ^
I'm only stating the facts. Ethical or not they will never reverse the call.
October 3rd, 2019 at 10:35 PM ^
disagree. before actual replay rules, i've seen several times where the umpires would confer to stall while they wait to watch the replay. then change the call. it was obvious what they were doing.
October 3rd, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
Agree... Those official huddles were blatant replay scrums! And they were correct way more often than todays replay idiots are.

Candlesticks make a nice gift.

Hmmm... no video. I will still get outraged by this development
October 3rd, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
Damn. I mean really,damn.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:07 PM ^
They probably should have just kept it to themselves.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
What's the point of admitting a mistake if you're not going to prevent the player from being unfairly punished for said mistake? The kid is being penalized for an officiating error. Not good, MAC.
October 3rd, 2019 at 9:45 PM ^
Good job MAC. Way to right the injustice.
October 3rd, 2019 at 10:06 PM ^
Yes, you were sentenced to death for murder, and we did find out the real killer wasn't you, but your firing squad appointment is still set for 8am. Thanks for playing.

Is it Brian's line, People in charge because they're in charge?
October 4th, 2019 at 2:29 AM ^
It’s absolutely amazing how we have replay and the guy in charge of making the call can get it wrong so often. I’d rather not even have it.
October 4th, 2019 at 8:34 AM ^
So what in the hell is the point of the further review? If you are going to spend all of those man hours reviewing every call of every game and the end result is this. Stupid is as stupid does.
October 4th, 2019 at 9:00 AM ^
Yeah that's fucked.
October 4th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
Is there a video?
