M's Mount Rushmore

Submitted by JeepinBen on

A CBS national writer is putting together Mt. Rushmores for lots of programs. Today's? Michigan!

I'd love to have heard his rationale for leaving Yost off, but it's nice write ups on the 4 he chose. The videos are worth the click themselves http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/michigan-footballs-mount-rushmore-how-do-you-limit-it-to-four

Agreed.  Too much recency bias.  Love Desmond and AC, but if you can only pick 4, they are not among the 4 most program-defining people in Michigan history.

Top candidates:

- Yost - the Progenitor

- Crisler - brought the winged helmet to Michigan

- Harmon - Mr. Everything

- Canham - defined the role of the modern AD

- Bo - redefined the Michigan - Ohio State rivalry

- Charles - best player in Michigan history

I would go with 2 players - Harmon and Charles - and two coaches - Yost and Crisler or Bo.

As they both went at the same time but this one had the photo embedded for board study, we will run with this one. As we all know, being first doesn't always mean your thread stays in these situations. Hopefully, the OP of the first one does not take offense.

Really only one spot is debatable. May have gone Harmon over AC, but what he did in a time (and offense) where receivers didn't amount to much was crazy impressive.

If Jim gets a couple titles he takes AC's spot.

Considering that he got the 1983 version of Ally Sheedy out of it, I'd say that playing Joshua's game worked out pretty well. And then, just to knock him down a peg, his brain made him attracted to Sarah Jessica Parker. Tough break, kid.

Bo, Yost, Woodson and Charles Baird. Three foundational pillars that built the program to what it is today and in my opinion the greatest player ever to don the Maize and Blue.

gotta have him there.

You could have 2 categories, one for players and one for coaches

Players:

Harmon, Carter, Howard, Woodson

Coaches:

Yost, Oosterbaan, Bo, Carr (won a 'ship)

In a few years Harbaugh will be there too.

Finally!!  Someone mentions Don Canham!  He HAS to be on any Mt Rushmore of Michigan greats.  He not only accelerated the football team by hiring Bo, he rebuilt the athletic department into the money-making empire it is today.  He is what Dave Brandon was trying to be (and failed miserably at).  Without Canham, the entire CFB world is still of shell of itself.  Trendsetter, he was...

That Canham has to be there in terms of the most influence (positive) on Michigan football and Michigan athletics more generally.  In addition to Bo and Yost, I guess I'd go with Crisler (no winged helmet without him) over Woodson, even though Woodson was probably the most impactful player.  I have a hard time picking one player over the other and then comparing them with coaches.  Of course, I'm willing to compare an AD with coaches, so what do I know?

I would go with Bo, Harmon, Yost, and HARBAUGH. Reasoning: Bo: Obvious Harmon: First Heisman winner, war hero, long time broadcaster, fathered a TV star. Yost: Iconic coach, revolutionized college football, built Michigan Stadium HARBAUGH: One of the program's best QB's and leaders. Turned down the NFL to coach Michigan. Hopefully continues success.

He's got to be on Mt. Rushmore for this alone:

In his final college football game, Harmon led the Wolverines to a 40–0 victory over Ohio State, scoring three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, four extra points, intercepting three passes, and punting three times for an average of 50 yards. In a display of sportsmanship and appreciation, the Ohio State fans in Columbus gave Harmon a standing ovation at game's end.[46] No other Wolverine player has been so honored, before or since.

He's like a combination of Denard, Woodson, and Zoltan Mesko.
