Luke Fickell Contract & Compensation: $775K for 2011...until Jan 31, 2012*

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Summary of Luke Fickell's signed employement contract here.

$775,000 total compensation for Fickell.

Tressel's total compensation was $3.5 million per year.

Also:

The contract, released by the university on Thursday, makes it very clear that Fickell is not guaranteed a job after the agreement ends Jan. 31, 2012.

And:

“This agreement is renewable solely upon an offer from Ohio State and an acceptance by coach,” the contract stipulates in section 2.0 under Term. “This agreement in no way grants coach a claim to tenure in employment.”

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who did not immediately return a call requesting comment, has said that Fickell will be a candidate for the permanent job but that the school will do a nationwide search to find its next head coach. Rumors of potential candidates have been circulating ever since 10-year coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign.

I still like that they took the "interim" off the title even though everyone knew that this is exactly what he was - the result of a panic move.

"Let's not go to OSU...'tis a silly place"

Of course the$775k is worth the shit Fickell has taken this year.  A lot of people take more shit than he does for $8 an hour on a daily basis.

Besides, he should be able to parlay this into a cushy head coaching position at Youngstown State.

Yeah, I mean... he doubled his salary and will be able to easily land either a low level HC gig or a BCS level DC job

plus he got to live his dream for one year

if Tressel had stayed, he would have endured another half decade at his previous salary only to be passed over for the head coaching job and be forced to take an inferior position elsewhere

...worse jobs that paid less. No free uniforms either.

But for Fickell, it would be a bit sad if his head coaching career was prematurely derailed by the miserable hand that he has to play this year at OSU.  I've been on campus in Columbus a couple times this term, and in the span of 7 games he has already achieved the sort of fan hostility that Coach Rodriguez had after three years.

You would probably find similar language in most coaches' contracts, Tressel included.  It's a legal way of saying, "at the end of your contract term, we don't owe you jack, Luke."

I'm pretty sure most people would put up with a non-legal punishment issue.  The NCAA?  Are you kidding?  You know that when he leaves work, he would still be making 775k, right?  "Who wants to coach at OSU with all the crap going on?"  Considering the payment floor is 775k, I would imagine that data set would include a hell of a lot of people.

There are PLENTY of coaches who would want the opportunity to rebuild ohio state, and this is in spite of the NCAA cloud hanging over them, the ineptitude of Smith/Gee, and the overly rabid and fickle (see what i did there?) fan base.  If Gene Smith doesn't botch the coaching search as badly as Michigan did (hahaha, sorry, sorry, is there anything Gene Smith can't botch?), then they have an opportunity to get a really good coach.

Did anyone else get the impression that the announcers for Saturday’s game, Speilman and Urban Meyer were auditioning for the defensive coordinator and head coaching job at that school in Ohio .

He really hasnt dont that bad of a job.  The talent well is not bottomless after you consider 5 starts including a pretty good QB were not playing 5 games (and Pryor gone of course).  Trying to win in that situation + losing Tressell + the low team/fanbase moral is not a good situation to walk into.

All Im saying is the performance issues are really his fault and he really can't be blamed for their rough season.  If he gets the chance to coach 3 years, he'll probably do fine.  Not likely though, as everyone wants to blame somebody and it will probably be Fickel.

Luke Fickell is one of the main reasons why OSU's recruiting class is in the tank right now. Michigan can continue to get fat with Ohio recruits if he gets an extension. I hope Luke Fickell is Ohio State's coach for the next two years.I haven't been this optimistic about recruiting since John Cooper was in charge of the evil empire. The football Gods blessed us with Gene Smith and Luke Fickell. Hopefully, Brady Hoke has some more good luck on his side. We need to milk his "Michigan Man Magic" for at least several more recruiting cycles.

the announcing on that game was pretty good. Urban Meyer gives a coaches insight, and Speilman may be a Buckeye, but is no idiot. Kick a field goal right? Kick a field goal right? No, no, and uh no, and while we're at it wtf, why didn't they run it?

Only one talking head on that game crew. Even the sideline guy was pretty good.
