As far as I'm concerned this might've been the best result for us. I never thought that Peppers had a shot at winning but that 5th place gives him more motivation to come back next year.

I'm glad there are plenty here who are honest enough to admit that Peppers didn't have a Heisman-type season. He was very good, not great.

He had a fine year, but he wasn't a top-3 Heisman candidate. I'd argue he's .more valuable than Mayfield or Westbrook, but whatever. Still a great year, and he's still got great pro potential.

Peppers is a great player and had a good season but it's hard to quantify his play relative to the other candidates. Opposing teams had to game plan around him, didn't direct play in his area of the field... etc. But as any Mgoattorney will tell you, it's hard to prove intent. Not surprised he didn't win - I'm glad he's representing M at the ceremony. Also first post! Be gentle.

Congrats to Jabrill for making it to NY - he clearly deserved that, at least.  I was hoping he'd be 3rd, but I'm happy with 5th because he earned it.  No, he wasn't the best defensive player in CFB, and maybe not on his own team, either.  He played so many positions that he couldn't get really good at any of them.  But he made game changing plays at everyone of those positions.  He allowed several defensive coverages from the same formation without changing personal.  Hell, Woodson didn't even do that!

But does anyone have any doubts that he could be one of the very best positional players at any of the positions he played, should he have concentrated on that one position alone?  I don't.  I think he would have excelled as a DB (and believe he'll play safety in the NFL), and as a RB.

One thing that struck me through the year, though, that really stood out for me concerning the Heisman: he didn't elevate his level of play in big games.  He was really good in every game, consistently really good.  Woodson separated himself in the biggest games.  He stood out against MSU.  He stood out against PSU.  He stood out against OSU.  And he stood out against WSU in the Rose Bowl.  Jabrill didn't stand out, he was consistently really good in every game.  Right or wrong, that hurt his chances as much as anything.

Peppers is a very valuable player but just doesn't have the gaudy numbers of a Heisman winner and he didn't have any huge moments against any of our huge games. Good for him to just be chosen!

30 of Lamar Jackson's 51 Total TDs came in the first 6 games of the season. 4 of those 6 opponents included 4-8 Charlotte (8 TDs), 4-8 Syracuse (5 TDs), 3-9 Marshall (7 TDs), 4-8 Duke (2 TDs, only won 24-14 in a game that was close the entire way, and many felt like Duke was jobbed by officiating). Played against 3 teams all season... FSU (Won 63-20, accounted for 5 TDs & 362 yards of total offense. Clearly his best game of the season. Clemson (Lost 36-42, accounted for 457 yards of total offense & 3 TDs. Very good performance on the road at tough place to play. Even if Clemson is really an 8-4/7-5 team at heart masquerading as an 11-1 playoff team). Then an exposing game against Houston (Lost 10-36, accounted for 244 yards of total offense and 1 TD). He also finished the season with back to back ugly losses to Houston & perennial SEC East cellar dweller Kentucky (7-5). The Heisman Trophy is officially a joke.

During their 1-2 start, Dede was about as unexceptional as the rest of his Oklahoma teammates... But during their 9 game win streak to close out the season, win the Big 12 & finish #7 in the country... He scored at least 1 TD in every game (16 total), only failed to break 100 yards once vs Baylor (4 catches, 88 yards & 2 TDs), and was the key cog in Oklahoma turning a potentially disastrous and disappointing season around. I think there's something to be said for how you finish the season, and also the impact you have on games when you don't get the ball in your hands every single offensive snap. We all know dual threat QBs are the great equalizer in college football. Most of them put up ridiculous numbers, especially against poor competition (Denard Robinson). I think constantly giving it to QBs and RBs is unfair, because they are obviously going to touch the ball more than anyone else each game. Doesn't automatically make you the best player on the field, or even your team for that matter... It's an unfair bias from the very start, and has made the presentation mundane.

But I thought Watson would have and I was ok with that I suppose... I figured Baker and Dede would cancel each other out... Don't think Peppers deserved it... And Watson is the only reason Clemson is in the playoff and he beat Lamar head to head.

Peppers should've been third. He had every opportunity to really make a case to win it, especially if he took one to the house in Columbus and we prevailed. I think what really hurt him was the predictable way he was used on offense during the second half of the season.

And nobody is surprised! Though I think its kind of ridiclous the Baker Mayfield is #3 on the list, when he has Dede Westbrook, Samaje Perine, and Joe Mixon as weapons. Not to mention the Big 12 wouldn't know what defense was if it hit them in the face. Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by Mayfields placement, as previous Alabama running backs win it off the strength of their O-Line.

Peppers at 5th is laughable. He is the best "player" bc he influences games in so many different ways. 933 snaps at 14 different positions.

Sadly peppers could've easily won this award had our staff not been offensively challenged with how to use him. I'm still puzzled as to why we didn't see peppers more as a standard RB like we did in 15. With all the big wins we had, if the coaches used Jabrill the right way he could've easily had 10-15 td on offense.

a pretty weak field of candidates.  Peppers is a great player, but there is a lot of hype there for things plenty of other players can do just as well or better.

Great player and I'll miss the heck out of him when he's gone.  It should be a great honor for him to be invited to NY as a primarily defensive player and exceedingly difficult thing to accomplish.

Well done Jabril.

I stopped caring about the Heisman after
Cam Newton won it. Don't get me wrong Cam was the best player in college football that year but, they made such a big deal about outstanding moral fiber and a leader of men. it's like when a recruit says he cares about academics and chooses ASU over Michigan

It would have been nice but I really didn't expect him to win it, especially with all the hype Jackson was getting. He is an exciting player. I have to wonder how he would have done against the B10 or SEC??

Jackson in now way has those numbers in the B1G or SEC. Not even a question in my mind and although Jabrill finished fifth and didn't have the most exciting last couple games, he still had the most impressive season in my mind. From an actual football players standpoint and not just being a biased fan, Jabrill was the best talent up there with the best season. He could do just about everything that every one of those cats could do. Maybe doesn't have the arm or accuracy to throw great but whatever. None of them can come close to doing everything that he does. Oh and where was that big stud McCaffrey again that all of you were hyping up for so long?

Folks, it's very cool that we got an exciting player to Ney York.  That has not happened for 13 years, and it was looking for a while that it would never happen again.

I didn't think Peppers even should have gone to New York. He faded big time down the stretch. He's a fantastic player, supremely talented...but what he did on the field just did not rise to the level of Heisman-caliber. I mean, yeah, he played a bunch of different positions...but after about MSU he stopped having much success at any of his positions other than his defense, and even then the defense around him was so good that his own individual strengths were shaded by the collective strengths of the rest of the defense. He was arguably not even the best defender on the team. In fact, Lewis had more of a Heisman moment than Peppers did with that game-sealing INT against Wisconsin.

I know that was incredibly negative to say. Well, maybe I'm saying all of this so that Peppers can come back next year to prove me wrong and win the Heisman. PROVE ME WRONG, DAMNIT.

About how I figured it would go, but thought it should have been closer between Watson and Jackson. I also thought Peppers deserved 3rd, over the Oklahoma duo, because of what he brought to the table, but I didn't feel the voters felt the same and obviously they didn't.
