Let's just put to rest the idea that Harbaugh will not finish out the season. The 49ers do not have a single reason to fire him now. Maybe they'll shitcan Greg Roman now, but Harbaugh will finish out the year and then head to Ann Arbor. :)

No sane person would agree to become part of this organization. This could be a permanently damaging career move. M, on the other hand, is unified, set up for future success, and fully prepared to give him complete control of the ship.

Oakland likely moving, Yorks are stable when compared to Davis', Davis' never have given personnel control to a coach and are not likely to start now, JH can keep entire staff at M if he so wishes, he will not have more power and control than at M, M will likely offer much more significant financial package, and finally Oakland has history of combustible relationships with coaches. Oakland job can ruin your career, period.

Rich Rodriguez disagrees with you.

Perhaps, but considering Arizona just finished as a runner-up for the Pac-12 championship and is looking like it could finish the season ranked in the Top 15, I would hardly characterize Rich Rodriguez's coaching career "ruined".

Really? Where is it easier to win - East Lansing or Ann Arbor? Who's held far better national sway with recruits like, forever? It's not the place dude, it's that we had two bad coaching hires. RR was not the answer because (a) his smurf patrol offense has a ceiling, and (b) he knows nothing about defense and thus is totally hit/miss depending upone whomever he entrusts his D on. Hoke was not the answer because he just wasn't capable enough as a coach, period.
It's not the place, it's that we've had two bad hires. The next one should finally change things for the better.

If Rich Rod went 8-5 his first 2 years, he probably would have been fired after 3 years too. His 3rd year at Zona is as fluky as it gets as it is as awesome it is.
December 8th, 2014 at 9:48 AM ^
I agree but with added caveats.
1. Dave Brandon was a cancer to any possible elite coach considering M.
2. Dessimated recruiting, though I think if Brady Hoke had been any semblance of a good coach, that wouldn't have been as big of an issue. His recruiting has been lights out for an average/below average coach.

Suppose Harbaugh had been Michigan's coach this year already. Isn't it highly, highly likely that JH could have got better results out of Devin Gardner than Hoke did?

Dont count on it, the 49ers are apparently floating that they want a first round draft pick for him. When that blows up in their face as nobody would trade anything higher than a third round pick at this point, I bet the fire him. Harbaugh is an emotional guy, I can see him just saying "f*ck it" and coming back to college.
December 8th, 2014 at 2:21 AM ^
If they could get a 3rd round pick, why would they fire him instead?
December 8th, 2014 at 2:22 AM ^
Harbaugh isn't leaving the NFL. It is what it is. Hell will freeze over before he comes back to the college level. He hates dealing with boosters, recruiting, people in the real world, etc. Nothing UM can do about it. My money is on Pinkel or Mora.

I think Harbaugh has earned the right to deal with whomever he so chooses.

I thought the linked article was a good read, I hadn't come across it yet, but I didn't get the take aways he hates dealing with boosters, recruiting and people in the real world. The only college confrontation Wickersham relates is with Stanford Admin over the university's admissions policy. If anything, his eclectic and disorganized method for coaching compared to the formal top-down method preferred by the NFL (mentioned in the seventh section) is as much an indication he would return to college as anything I have read.
"While the NFL is slowly transitioning to a corporate and scientific style of football, for better and worse, 'We're the Scranton Bureau.' "

didnt he start working for the Raiders yesterday?
December 8th, 2014 at 12:21 AM ^
You are assuming that rational decisions will be made by an organization who feels that they do not need a coach that took them from 6-10 and completely irrelevant, to three NFC championship games and a Super Bowl appearance. I am not sure that is reasonable.
December 8th, 2014 at 5:13 AM ^
The worst thing that can happen is he gets fired. You want JH to be restricted to trade only for other NFL teams. He isn't restricted if he goes to the NFL. Besides JH has value and the 49ers are not going to rebound for the playoffs if he is gone. Just not going to happen

That would be stupid on their part for a variety of reasons.
1. No possibility of trade to another NFL team.
2. They'd be on the hook for Harbaugh's salary or the difference between his current pay and his next job if the pay is lower.
3. Interim coaches rarely win.
If it happens, it's sheerly a matter of unprecedented hatred between JH and 49er management. But still stupid.
Would make M more of a possibility, though.
December 8th, 2014 at 12:02 AM ^
I believe if they fire him, they have to pay the last year of the contract, but they still own his NFL rights for the year, so he can be traded.
December 8th, 2014 at 12:05 AM ^
No. If you fire someone, they are no longer a part of your organization and you can not trade them, but that won't matter because Jimmy's coming home anyway.

It doesn't matter when it happens. They're not going to make the playoffs for sure now and we have until January 2nd if we think we have a good enough to get him. Whenever he is let go, we need to be the 1st ones to talk to him and make him a deal he can't refuse.
