Is this the least hyped football season in mgoblog history?

Submitted by The Shredder on September 3rd, 2021 at 2:50 PM

I've been around since pretty much the start. I can't remember a football season with less excitement from board. Even the last Hoke and RR years had more leading up to kick off. I'm looking forward tomorrow but is definitely not the the typical Christmas morning vibe I usually get.

Yea I just completely checkout after the MSU debacle last year. I haven’t been reading many press clippings, listening to Michigan football podcasts, or counting down the days like I normally do.

Im happy I’ll see the team tomorrow but I don’t have very many expectations. I believed as frustrating as the Harbaugh tenure has been at times that we had a shot to win the Big Ten in 2016-2019. I had such excitement before all of those seasons and read about the team and listened to podcasts but didn’t feel that excitement this year.

I’d love to be pleasantly surprised this year! I’m interested to see what the offense and defense looks like.

From a purely "football will be played with people in the stands" perspective, I'm enormously excited.

From an expectations standpoint, not so much. Not unless we start off 7-0 or something like that.

I don't know, I'm pretty excited.  As soon as Monday hit I started getting antsy for the weekend.  Made for some long days at the office.

This is by far the least excited I’ve been since before my undergrad days. I’ve got 1 kid now and 1 on the way so my priorities have shifted but I just have zero faith in Harbaugh winning even a conference championship (while admitting I was 1000% in support of the hire at the time).

I hope they turn it around but even a 9-3 “overachieving” season with a loss to OSU after 7 years would warrant a new coach IMO.

I’m in the same boat. I have no confidence in Jim at this point and I wish that I was wrong on that point. It’s more likely Jim gets fired or takes another job than he beats OSU or wins the B1G championship.

I still remember the thrill and excitement I felt when Jim was hired and feel so much of what could have been but never was. 10 win seasons are nice but losing 2 games at the end of each year takes the icing off the cake with no hardware to show for it. If UM is all about championships in every other sport why is ok to “just do your best”?

When I know I've done a bad job at something my go-to reaction is to be self-deprecating. I do the same thing when my sports teams are bad. I don't want to take Michigan football so seriously that I can't make jokes at the expense of the program when they've barely produced real celebratory moments in my adult life. If I can't laugh and joke about the shortcomings then there's kind of just not a lot fun to be had.

Well, it sounds like the level of content he was giving us—which, even from a perpetual bpone, at least provided fodder from which the rest of our fandom could build excitement—was costing him rather dearly on a personal level.

Maybe our not getting too excited at first will be better for us in the end, and we can all be healthier for it right along with him. And may that end be a slowly building elation, as week-by-week we do better than any of us had expected, until we end up with one of those great, special seasons. (Ok, so even with less content, I myself am still pretty excited!!)

I blame it on the following in no particular order

  • Last season - 'nuff said
  • The entire Harbaugh era being overhyped both nationally and from within.  The whole of the fan base is over preseason hype. No more talking. Just win
  • Realistic expectations for this season fall well short of anything worth being excited about
  • Brian stepping away for a bit
    • Sure, he posts on the front page. But less content leads to less eyeballs leads to less board activity
  • Departure of Ace (see above)
  • COVID, politics and our inability to keep them separate on the board
    • Covid brought out the crazy in many posters, which got some users banned and annoyed others to the detriment of the board
    • WD and XM used to generate a ton of board content, but they gon'
    • Regardless of which "side" people are on, people don't want to read your covid/masking/vax/political opinions on Mgoblog.
    • Brian posting Ann Arbor local politics on the front page and basically telling us all to go F ourselves if we don't like it its his blog he'll do what he wants. He is not wrong, but IMO the board changed for the worse on this day
    • Mgoblog used to be a retreat from politics but several of the above have contributed to the sanctity now being gone

I'm old enough to have grandkids and have been watching Michigan football since the mid 70's.  Without a doubt, this is the least excited I've ever been going into a season.  It's not so much that I don't think Michigan has enough talent to win consistently and have a good season.  I've just lost my confidence in Harbaugh and his ability to run the program.  I'm now at the "they have to prove to me they can win" phase before I start getting excited again.  That being said, I'll still be there at the Big House in my regular seat cheering the team on.

I think that most people are generally excited that football has returned in - for now - a more typical fashion than, say, last year, where it barely happened and almost didn't altogether.

I also think that many of us are not expecting - oh, how to put this - fantastic things necessarily, by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, so there is a competing vibe of lowered overall expectations.

Certainly, that's not everyone, but it is where I am at. Now, I would love to be pleasantly surprised, but I am not expecting to be.

I think last season destroyed the majority of our souls.  And the last two games of 2019 didn't exactly help either.

I've been saying for a while that this is the least excited I've been for football season to start in a LONG time.  But in the last week, I've almost been...happy that football is right around the corner?  Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

I just hope tomorrow goes well.  We desperately need something to cheer about, even if it's against a MAC opponent.  The fans, band and cheerleaders being present certainly can't hurt either.

The contenders would be:

2010 - Had Denard, RR finally had his recruits, team was getting better

2014 - Nuss hype, Gardner hype, idea that we matched up great against ND

2020 - Will Joe Milton's college career be more like Cam Newton or Vince Young? A lot of COVID uncertainty

2021 - Harbaugh is in good physical/mental shape, better assistants, last year was a fluke due to COVID

My vote would be for this year, hopefully this team can build some hype during the season.

I’m excited for football in general, but I hold no real expectations about what Michigan is capable of.

In the words of the great Michael Gary Scott, I’m ready to get hurt again.

I’m less hyped about college football overall, some due to Michigan’s on-field performance and some of the things going on off-field around the university in general, but it’s mostly due to the changes around the game like the playoff, and it’s potential expansion, and realignment. Probably due to the fact that I’m getting older too. Whatever the combination of reasons, the magic is declining by the season over the last five or six seasons. I still enjoy it, it just doesn’t mean as much as it once did to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's the professionalization (is that a word?) of college football that is ruining it.    Dave Brandon once said he wanted every Saturday at Michigan Stadium to be like the Super Bowel.   John U Bacon aptly replied that we don't want that - we want the college football experience.

Sadly from the lengthening of the games due to so many commercials, to the piped in music to the blaring scoreboards, there is less and less difference from a college game an NFL game.   And now when you throw away the traditional college conferences and add in college football free agency the whole college football thing is changing and not for the better.

I was talking Michigan football with one of my cousins a few years ago and he said to me,”I don’t think it’s ever going to be what it was again.”  and I remember thinking he was overreacting to a bad run of coaches.  Now, year 7 of Harbaugh and I think he’s right.  As the landscape has shifted M just hasn’t kept up.  It’s really sad to sit around and think about Michigan football fighting to stay atop of the second tier of college football and it’s even sadder that M football is struggling to do that.

It's the effects of a long-term 15 years or so decline in Michigan football. A blip here there can be overcome, especially for younger people, but the long-term effects of a slightly better-than-average team has consequences

I’m as excited as I have been for 30 years as a fan. Fall and UM football are synonymous in my book.

People can lower their expectations all they want—who gives a flying rat’s hole. I’m going to enjoy watching simply because I love football—even after the depressing canyon that was last year. Sport is sport.

You can only take so much as a fan. Last year was a big waste. It's only been the last few days that I've got excited about football at all this year. Last night's OSU game got the blood flowing as I realized how much I hate OSU these days and I really need to see Michigan beat them. This year? Probably not but I have to see Michigan play a few games first to see if we have a chance.

I think it will kick into high gear. Last year was pretty much lost - covid shortened and we were awful. For me it’s like this ‘gap’ year is making it harder to get excited, but I’ll be on the golf course early tomorrow morning and from there it will get exciting I suspect.

Even the last Hoke and RR years had more leading up to kick off.

I think that's your answer. There's been excitement before with such terrible results to follow that I think there's just a level of exhaustion amongst the fanbase. That's how I feel. I want to be excited, and there is part of me that's pumped for the season to start. But I have no illusions of anything positive really coming out of this season...which suppresses the overall level of excitement.

It probably is (though I honestly don't remember the end of the Hoke era being particularly fun), though I also think that perhaps a bit less hype might make it a bit more enjoyable.
