Last Time Michigan faced No. 2 Penn State

Submitted by Maizeblue11 on

The last time we faced Penn State when they were ranked No. 2 was November 9th, 1997. Ranked 4th in the nation at the time, Michigan won 34-8 and held PSU to 169 net yards, almost 300 below their season average. Oh yeah, and The Big Hit.

Looking forward to our 4th straight win vs. Penn State and the defense terrorizing Saquon Barkley.

The flip side of that hit was, if I am not mistaken, it effectively ended the football careers of both players. As I recall, neither of them played much if at all after this game.

Was it a hard hit though? I don't remember seeing many that would compete with it.

I recall seeing in a segment about that hit where the UM defender was talking about how it ended his football career.  Really sad.  As much as we hate a lot of the targeting nonsense, we should remember it is there to try to protect the players.

That Saturday was dubbed Judgement day if I remember right.. what an ass whooping we gave them. That's not happening this week but it's nice to remember.

I was a resident and we took the in-training exam that day. When it was over, we all went to the bar to watch. One of my junior residents was an obnoxious little shit Penn St. alum. The beer was particularly tasty that day. And I kicked that exam's ass too

as a HC, athough after a few years of screwing around they placed him inside a "circle of trust" and let him stay on as a figure head. I remember Steele's TFL to start the game on the jet sweep. I remember Woodson remaining uncovered, all the way into the end zone and wondering if M was going to snap the ball before they got a defender into covereage. I recall Joe coming out to start the second half, taking over the play calling as if he were going to bring them back. I knew it was over for him that night, especially given the Woodson "no cover" and the first of what would become many sprints after the officials at game's end.  The hit was terrible and I can close my eyes and almost hear it.

It was total domination throughout but the biggest difference is we knew we were going to score and this weekend there is hope but nothing promised.

"4th straight win" It took me a second to process the fact that we beat them in 2014. I can't believe how ridiculous our dominance over that program has been over the years. We own them like we own Florida and Notre Dame. No wonder they hate us so much.

And he should be.  The players and the game will be better off without that kind of play.  That hit is the epitome of what the rule seeks to eliminate.  And I can guarantee you both players wish it never happened.

That Brian would not be a good enough QB. But he did the perfect job. Our defense was awesome and our OL and running game were both good.

This UM club isn’t anywhere near that previous club. If UM wins, it will have to be a perfect game. JOK will have to pass for 200-250, no picks. The OL will have to protect with 1 sack or less, will have to rush the ball for 150-175 yards. The D will have to play pretty much what we have seen most of this year, other than the penalties vs IU. Somehow shut down Barkley similarly to last year, keep McSorely in the pocket and maybe force a couple of picks.

I want to see these things happen but I don’t expect them to happen.
