Kinda OT: 3 Clemson players failed drug test

Submitted by The Baughz on December 24th, 2018 at 3:29 PM

Per the Twitters, 3 Clemson players failed a drug test and could possibly miss the CFP. Most notably, is projected 1st round draft pick Dexter Lawrence.

They tested positive for ostarine, which is a banned substance in the US.

Lawrence missing this game would be big, but still think Clemson has enough talent to beat ND.

No, they got caught taking a SARM.  While it is possible they were taking it on purpose, it is more likely that they didn't even know they were taking it when taking a supplement (a lot of times small amount of things of substances like this are added to the supplement and not listed in the ingredient list). It still is their fault for taking something not given to them by the school or not having the school test it, but it isn't like they were juicing up to a crazy degree.

Oh come on. The purpose is to enhance muscles, it is not widely available in legal supplements, and they got caught because they made a mistake.

The fact that three have been caught suggests either a ring of guys on the team with the same private doping advisor and regimen, or a systematic program sponsored by the team that made a serious masking error.

Correct!  This!!!  I have yet to see an athlete who got busted for taking an unauthorized supplement come out and say "I bought Product "X" at GNC and here it is and you can test it and see that it does contain the banned substance.  Still my fault, but here is the exact product I took  Warning to all players.".

Without solid proof of when and how, it's really hard to know exactly what happened. But, the old standard when caught is "Deny, deny, deny".  Post Ben Johnson, and since all other that have been caught, it's hard for me to believe he got it in his system incidentally. He didn't know he's supposed to be careful with what he takes?

Given that ostarine is not approved for human use or consumption in the U.S., or in any other country, there are no legal medications that contain ostarine.

In short, no GNC supplement would ever have it because anyone selling it would open themselves to INSANE levels of liability due to the fact that the compound is specifically designated as not approved for human consumption.

SARMs are not put in supplements.

This is what Grier tried to say getting caught with Ligondrol, but it's just not a valid excuse. That's why the NCAA, and any other governing body don't buy the excuse.

They were taking the SARMs straight up. There is a good chance though that the team wasn't aware though because any person can go online and get a SARM.

The notion that anyone is still genuinely arguing that college athletes at major D1 programs with millions of dollars on the line are ingesting a random handful of pills without knowing their exact contents is crazy to me. They knew what they were doing, they figured they wouldn't get caught, and they did.  They'll survive.  But SARM is not cleared for human consumption basically anywhere in the world, and it's 100% used as a performance and recovery enhancer.

SARMs are a very mild steroids, with Ostarine being the mildest of the popular SARMs (milder than Ligandrol). So no, they were not juicing to a crazy degree, but it is also highly unlikely that they somehow ended up taking it by mistake. Dabo trying to say that i could have come from hair cream is laugh out loud funny.

The players had "trace" amounts of ostarine (essentially a masking/mitigating agent) in their systems, and the initial result will need to be confirmed by testing the B-sample.  Lawrence thought he was being pranked when informed about the test.

Swinney translated:

"Dadgumit, I have no idea how my players got this illegal performance enhancing substance, that I will now pretend to have never heard of, in their system.  I will pretend to be a simple southern boy so that you believe I couldn't possibly have anything to do with this."

SARMs are not put into supplements. It doesn't make any economic sense because SARMs are expensive (relative to normal supplements), and they are not made in the same place as supplements - they are made in labs.

If you are caught with SARMs in your system, you were either knowingly taking it or it was being slipped to you by a person close to you.

Attaining SARMs is really easy, though. Any student-athlete can go online and purchase them, although I think there has been recent legislation to make purchasing of them illegal

That'd be awesome if Trevor Lawrence missed after they kicked Kelly Bryant to the curb.  (or whatever the guy's name is.)

Edit:  It's Dexter Lawrence who is suspended not Trevor Lawrence.

MK2866 or Ostraine is considered a SARM. It was first developed to help with osteoporosis and muscle wasting diseases.   It helps with healing the body quicker along with many other benefits.    It can easily be bought on the internet most companies sell it looking like a supplement and there have been numerous times supplement companies have added SARMs to  product and not put it on the label.  Though I doubt this is what happened but alot of sites on the internet claim it is legal to take.
