Kevin Sousa's status?

Submitted by cypress on

I know that Sousa had made some comments about the coaching staff not communicating with him enough and he is taking other visits. Some speculated we were chasing Marquise Williams, but he does not appear likely now. So are we back "showing him love" or what? Seems like we would certainly like to have a QB in this class. I'm hoping he re-affirms his commitment to us. I just have a feeling about him being better than his ranking.

I have a feeling we won't be signing a QB this year, nor should we with so few spots available and depth issues on the D.

Sousa seems like a solid kid, but do we really need a QB in this class if the medical redshirt happens?

It seems highly likely that Tate comes back.  He had one bad week and 2 months later people think he's not coming back.  If he doesn't come back, I'll take your injury point, but here's why I don't agree (assuming Tate comes back).

  1. Do you really expect ALL THREE QBs to get injured?  That's like saying you need 4 Centers.
  2. No matter who came in, when you've got a 4th stringer in there you're in trouble.  I don't want to have Avery back at QB reliving his HS career, but I don't think Sousa would be much better.
  3. We're going to look for a guy in 2012/2013 anyways, what does a 4th string freshman bring to the table?  Are you saying he'll be something in a few years?
  4. In a few years we'll have the chance to get the next Denard.  Even if you don't buy the whole Stars rating thing, after what recruits see the next two years we'll have the best QB recruits coming.  Period.
  5. We need more recruits elsewhere, who will actually compete for time.  Sousa is not going to compete for at least 2 years, when DG will be a (hopefully) RS JR.  I still don't see Sousa taking that spot.  Especially when we get a big recruit in one of the next 2 years at QB.  (After next year, we should have the 4/5 star guys wanting to play QB for us.  No offense to Sousa.)
  6. Well, many more reasons besides, but those are the main ones so far.

Supposedly RR wants 4 or 5 QB's and I have to ask, "Why?" I'm almost positive that he never had to go any deeper than the 2nd string QB on his roster at WVU and I know that he hasn't had to here at UM.

I agree with tasnyder01, 3 scholarship QB's is more than adequate for any team except UCLA aka the Bermuda Triangle of QB's.

At the rate UM has lost DB's through injury and attrition, they should be using as many scholarships as possible on CB and S, not wasting one on a 4th string QB.

Purdue.

Also remember last week? Denard being held out for concussion symptoms and Tate coming in and smashing into a cameraman, getting up gimpy? What if he had to come out. Then what if Devin had further injured his back when he came in.

I can see why RR wants to atleast have 4 QBs on the roster that he can be comfortable with. Granted , it would probably be ugly because your on the 4th string freshman QB, but you actually have a plan if the worse happens.

1. No, but you don't recruit for just "next year" so that isn't really the reason to get Sousa... besides don't tempt the Angry Gods
3. In 2012/2013 you don't want to put in a frosh QB... in fact, you almost Never want to do this.
4. Uhhh, shouldn't stop you from getting a solid QB.
5. This one scholarship won't hurt us, we've already accounted for at least one QB opening
6. keep 'em coming :)

With an offense like this, with injuries that happen, and the possibility that a QB will not pan out, you need to have a backup every class just in case.  Remember when Shavodrick Beaver or Kevin Newsome were the great next QB?  Devin Gardner, for all his hype, is no guarantee.  There should be some kind of backup plan each class for any position, but especially QB.

If Gardner doesn't pan out, do you really want to be in a position where there is no one but some true or RS freshman to take over?

Just because he redshirts does not mean he stays for 5 years. QB is the most important position on the field, it's good to have options, good experienced ones.  So far, this coaching staff has had a pretty good track record on QB's, if they want to take him I say there's room.

We definitely don't need a qb in this class. We need to address the D as much as possible. I would like to have Sousa but he is not a necessity. Blake Countess, Avery Walls, Anthony Zettel among others should be are top priorities. But I will say this, Sammy Watkins is a must have at wr. That dude is a beast and would be a great addition to this class if RR and company can get him to commit. It definitely helps that Dallas Crawford will be in his ear. Let's take care of business against Purdue tomorrow and hopefully that will sway some recruits to head to AA.

With still the talk of recruit numbers and final position signings, I have not seen much common sense in terms of having a team composed of moderately equal players of each year st each position. Defense is weak now, so people want another 6 db's in this class. How about watching how iowa does it and make sure basically every position is manned by a jr or sr every year. Iowa has these teams with mediocre talent. Imagine a Michigan team loaded with 4 & 5 start junior and senior starters every year. Much as I hate to say it, mostly the way osu has been under tressel.

So a few years ago we really concentrated on offense, and neglected defense.  So your  solution is to over correct with this class?  I think RR is trying to find the balance now.  He wanted/needed to show us his offense right away to keep his job and now he needs balance to strengthen the team.

Sousa took a visit to Middle Tenn. State. He has visits for Louisville and Wake Forest planned. He may not want to go to a school that is stacked at qb for a few years. A lot of kids like the idea of playing right away, or playing a lot in their 2nd year.

Grabbing a qb would be nice, however with RR's offense exploding next year it shouldn't be too difficult to land a 4 or 5 star qb in the future.

I don't really buy the playing time argument.  IMHO, he knew the QB situation when he committed.  Plus, he had enough time to see how this season was playing out to change his mind.  It seemed he was open for visits after Williams visited.  I hope things work out and he will stay committed, because he still seems raw and the situation may be perfect for him.

If the kid wants to start out the gate, then Michigan doesn't have a chance with him... it didn't seem to be the issue before... i think he has said that Michigan has cooled off its pursuit after him, and that's why there's any question right now.  (At least that's what I gathered from my cursory glances on mgoblog.

Sousa is a good talent, and I rather there be a glut of competent QBs than trot out a walk-on.  Look no further than Purdue, which is on its 3rd/4th string QB right now.  I doubt they expected to be in that position, but stuff happens.

I read the title and I thought: "hmmm....Kevin Sousa's probably about 17 years old...I suspect he's still single, and why is the OP asking?" so I clicked the thread.

Otherwise, I hope he is still thinking of commit to Michigan.

Drew Henson's ankle, Ryan Mallett's transfer, Matt Gutierrez's shoulder and me all say, yes, you take a QB this year even if Gardner gets his redshirt.

We're talking about the single most important position to any offense, and particularly to RichRod's/

Other than injury arguments, I think getting a QB this class is important for the simple fact that Sousa (or whoever else) will have a years more experience than anyone we get next year. That may make a difference in a few years time.

we usually took a QB in every class.  I can't imagine why you wouldn't especially with RRod's offense.  I think if you find a quality QB, you have to take him.

Another thing not mentioned about taking a QB a year, is that the QBs Rodriguez recruits are very athletic, and have the capability of playing another position on offense.  If they don't pan out at QB, or aren't getting playing time because of a better starter, they can often put in time at another position, WR or RB maybe.

the only guy in this class. That is a big deal for him. Once we started looking around for a higher rated kid he questioned the situation. That plus the success of Denard drew the attention of others. I think he figures his chsnces of being the man down the road has diminished. He will likely end up elsewhere.

Could Sousa be waiting to see what happens with Gardners red shirt? If Gardner gets it, that would leave Sousa with only one year of eligibility after Gardner is done. Otherwise Sousa could rs next year and possibly start 2 years.

I think Sousa is a holy-lock to redshirt his true freshman year. You'd have 3 QB's ahead of him. You can always remove it if we get to Purdue territory, but he'd have 2 years on Gardner and 3 if Gardner doesn't get his redshirt. If I were Sousa, I'd like my chances to run the show as a RS Junior.

Remember when Michigan had the luxury of trotting out RS Sophs or Juniors at QB? Hopefully we get back to that with some depth at the position (Nothing against Robot Chad Henne).

So I guess the question remains..if Sousa decides to go elsewhere, do we have a backup plan at this point? I know everyone thought Marquise Williams might be coming (and honestly I dont know why he'd stick with UNC).

I don't think Tate is leaving anytime soon...Untill Denard can physically withstand the pounding he will be are Cliff Lee and Tate will be are Mariano Rivera...So, yes please I'll take another High School Quaterback for the class of 2011...

quarterback is the lifeblood of any rodriguez team.  you're see that this year with denard.  like another poster said, on some of these cats, you're going to miss.  to make sure the numbers are right, you take one every year.  you cant end up with another threet/sheridan.
