Barring a last-minute change of heart, source told ESPN that Michigan sophomore Kameron Chatman will transfer.

Ok. Never seemed like he caught on to the system. Hopefully the staff can fill that slot with someone whose skillset is better suited for Michigan. Appreciative of everything he gave to the program, particularly that buzzer beating three this year. Best of luck, Kam!

Not just that, an under 6 foot shooting gaurd who had limitted athleticism prior two his two hip surgeries. Spike is a good basketball player because he does things well that you need a point gaurd to do well. It would have been very sad if he had returned to be the third point guard as a 5th year senior. I hope he has a great year at Purdue and if he does, it will still have been the right choice to not bring him back.

Or, you know, his playing would inhibit the development of an objectively more talented guard, and he has an injury that tends to linger, even with surgery. He has a genetic condition. His surgery doesn't fix the issue. It provides a stopgap that slows its progression. He is still likely a candidate for a future double hip replacement surgery. If you want a guy with potentially severlely inhibited joints that may or may not have been helped by his recent massively invasive surgery to start over Ohio's Mr. Basketball next year, you're insane.

It works for basketball too. Should msu have gotten Costello to transfer last year so Schilling could play more and get ready for the 2016-2017 season. The more players you have, the better team you'll have. that's why Alabama and Tom Crean oversign. If you have less players, you have a greater chance of being screwed with injuries or the players you have not being very good like Doyle and Donnal last year. thats why Harbaugh brought in a so-so qb at the time like Rudock while also developing his younger guys and having the best guy play. At the end of the year, Rudock was dealing and we were a better team than we would have been if we followed the let your young guys like Speight and Malzone develop by getting rid of everyone else and forcing them to play.

Donnal actually played well last year and will probably have numbers similar to Jordan Morgan did. I know that doesn't fit into the "Donnal sucked" narrative, but actual statistics, which I trust over the eye test (which is apparently what everyone who dislikes Beilein goes by), say that he had a decent season

I disagree with this narrative that having Spike around would hinder the development of a talented young player.  I would think a kid like that could learn a lot from a much beloved veteran 5th year senior who was a fan favorite and NCAA tournament hero.

Spike wouldn't be eating up big minutes next year anyway but it would be nice to have him around for some stop-the-bleeding minutes where he can settle the team down and provide some solid shooting and ball-handling.  It would also be nice to see him finish his career in a Michigan uniform.

No the point stands that Spike wanted to play and play more than the time he probably would've here. Purdue's point guard situation was so bad last year that they had a hard time breaking a press against UALR in the tourney. They'll take a gamble on him, we had the luxury of having decent depth at PG. it's unfortunate what happened but it isn't like Beilein knew coming into last year that Spike would be around this year. He recruited at the PG spot like we were only going to have Derrick around.

Beilein's contract is through 2021 and it would cost $6 million to fire him next year.  The basketball program is fucked, and if he doesn't turn it around in recruiting over the next 2 years whoever comes in next will be just as fucked with a completely bare roster and a 2-3 year rebuilding project, so that's great.

By this same argument you'd have kept Hoke to avoid "going back" to the days of WCiMFH and missed out on Harbaugh.

The basketball team is like a car that runs well one day a week, when the humidity is just right and all the planets line up and the moon is full.

Shoot lights-out threes and win. Anything else, lose. How long has it been since we had a center who played well for even most of a season? McGary came on strong one year in the tournament, but that was it.
