A regent spoke up and now Juwan. This is good for Michigan Athletics. Something got to change. With Santa coming on board in October, hoping for a positive change in the fall.

With Santa coming on board in October

I have noticed that since Santa Ono was announced as the new president, both Juwan now and Harbaugh have been more forward about Michigan embracing NIL in the future and/or not doing enough now.

Seems like a good sign that maybe the school is shifting their attitudes towards staying competitive

Fuck Schlissel and his delusional...

err, never mind.

But hindsight being 20/20, I'm curious why the guy even came here in the first place? Brown is highly ranked, an Ivy, etc:

...and whether one is an academic high brow or not, you have to be a fucking moron that despite Michiagn's bona fides, to not accept that athletics are a HUGE part of the Michigan experience.

But Schlissel not only wanted none of that but had a public disdain for it.

Then don't accept the job.  Stay in your Ivy tower then.  Predator.

I think the stronger correlation than Santa is MSU having recent success on the hardwood recruiting trail and the multi-month observation of our FB recruiting class failing to profit off its 2021 on-field success. If our NIL game was stronger, both recruiting classes may have been close to completed.

I would very much like to know the group of people at UM who don't think the current NIL approach is a problem.  Seems like a small, but very powerful group of people.

Those who don't have an issue with UM's approach:

  • NCAA
  • State of Michigan

In seriousness, I don't know whether to have a problem with it or not, because I don't know what it is. I also don't know what fans are clamoring for every time they clamor. As others have noted, there are collectives. As many have said before, there's nothing stopping a booster from paying a recruit or a player.

What exactly are we talking about? Is it the UM AD actively organizing a group of boosters into a centralized, university-sponsored collective fund that directs different amounts to different players? Then we can stop having that discussion, because that's not going to happen.

This is one thing I really, really like about Juwan Howard.  Sometimes his in-game coaching and substitution patterns leave something to be desired, and he should not slap/claw coaches from other teams in the face regardless of circumstances.

But he tells the truth, he answers questions with actual (gasp) answers.  That is commendable.

I doubt there’s anything shaky that he’s standing on.  He’s a good administrator that has largely kept the AD out of trouble, and has quickly settled the outburst there have been (Harbaugh 2016, Juwan, etc).  He doesn’t command a room enough to cause any real discomfort to those in charge.  And he mostly keeps his mouth shut and manages his dept pretty well.  This one issue, where he apparently stated his case and then marched like a good boy, won’t cause him any grief with the Regents or MSC.

I love how he throws "we" in there at the end, like Juwan is somehow supposed to improve NIL that much by himself.  I guess Warde is gonna be hearing about this since the regent news last week and Santa coming to town.  I hope it jumpstarts some more discussions about a collective and other ways to improve NIL.  We are woefully behind.  I think there will be pullback at other schools but we still need to be able to meet that "standard."

Someone should probably let him know that Michigan has two NIL collectives. Clearly between this and the Dickinson comments the feelings from the basketball program to the limits they have

Dickinson's issues seemed to be more to do with UM not letting him use the block M and other Michigan-related marks without some oversight.  And I said at the time and will say again that Dickinson can and should make money off his likeness but he shouldn't expect UM to let him use their trademarks without some consultation; I'm sure he'd be pissed if UM sold his likeness without consulting him about it.

If they wanted to let the student athletes use the Block M, they can EASILY setup an easy process / procedures.

Out of curiosity, do you know how many of the schools that have embraced NIL fully allow cross pollination of university and personal branding?

I know for example, UGA does not allow blanket use of IP under NIL... there has to be an additional rights agreement (ostensibly to make sure the logo is represented properly).

Ditto for USC.

But other than that, I haven't been digging into the legalese much more -- only when those states' laws came out.

My guess is for TAMU, kids can do whatever the fuck they want.

Michigan has at least two collectives and seems to be generating decent returns for players on the roster.  I assume there's the pay-for-play NIL deals that UM seemingly won't engage in and that seems to be the bigger issue here.

If we can't have a proper NIL program on par with peers, why should we as fans care about conference expansion, television network deals, and UM sports in general? Where is all that money going?

When the game is stacked against you, it's not fun as a fan to watch or support.  I'd rather support the NFL because at least there is parity.
