John Baxter fired from USC
Was the special teams coordinator at UM during Harbaugh's first year, then left for the same position at USC. Curious to see how that ended.

His fault we lost to Msu in 15.
December 28th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Yep. Glad he left after one season.
December 28th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
Was he responsible for not calling Max protect?
December 28th, 2019 at 9:07 PM ^
Or burning their last 2 TOs unnecessarily on that last series, so they couldn't adjust when Sparty went all out to block.
December 28th, 2019 at 10:06 PM ^
If you weren't anticipating they would go "all out to block" in that situation, you were and are a helpless goddam fool.
December 28th, 2019 at 10:59 PM ^
Yes, he was

So was one of the coordinators I think. I wouldn't be suprised if others got the axe to. This has to be the last stand for Helton.

I loved his last album

O Line coach Tim Drevno?
December 28th, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
Fuck that guy. The first year MSU loss fall right on his goddamn lap.
December 28th, 2019 at 10:02 PM ^
No it didn't.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
helton should have been given the lane kiffen memorial tarmac handshake a year ago.
seen that team get decidedly softer and softer since he took over.
a lot people in my office are USC fans so i end up talking with them about it.
don't think baxter or drevno are the issues.
bigger cultural issues that haven't been the same since pete carroll left.
gone through several coaches and two ADs since then too.
probably wishing they kept Coach O after LSU's performance today.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:06 PM ^
The decision to keep Helton has to be one of the most bizarre ones made by a football powerhouse over the last several years.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:48 PM ^
I think it’s waiting to see how Slovis does next year, he’s really talented QB.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:13 PM ^
Drevno might not be the problem, but he’s part of it. Their O-line sucks, the o-line recruiting has sucked, and the fact that they can’t run the ball means that pass rushers can tee off on the QB. Absolutely mind-blowing that USC (or Florida State for that matter) can’t put together even a decent offensive line for years.
December 28th, 2019 at 10:08 PM ^
what they need is a complete new staff from top to bottom and a major culture improvement.
coach o may not have been the best coach by resume at the time but the USC team sounded like they liked him asking the AD to hire him permanently. he has built a good staff at LSU so one can only guess what he could have done if given the opportunity at USC.
December 28th, 2019 at 11:25 PM ^
Coach O won 2 national championships with Miami and 2 with USC as a d line coach. Other than the restraining order that got him fired from Miami (cocaine? steroids? Both) for assaulting a woman multiple times he seems like a good guy who got his shit together.

Firing Baxter is like hammering Cleveland St. for OSU’s NCAA violations.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:53 PM ^
probably wishing they kept Coach O after LSU's performance today.
I always felt that, like Gary Moeller with the Lions, Coach O did enough to earn a shot as the USC head coach.
To hell with USC.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:09 PM ^
I wouldn't complain as that makes one less major competitor for CA recruits.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:11 PM ^
For us or OSU?
December 28th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
USC is a dumpster fire. They would struggle to win 4 games in the B1G. The Pac12 sucks.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
And as was clearly demonstrated today, the Big 12 may suck just as badly as the PAC 12-perhaps even worse. The Big 12 conference got beat 99-37 today-and it wasn't nearly that close.
December 28th, 2019 at 11:30 PM ^
How does a 10-2 top [15] Notre Dame get matched up with an unranked 7-5 ISU? No one even wants to watch that game. ND should have played PSU or Memphis. ISU was 6th in their conference.
December 28th, 2019 at 9:36 PM ^
Wrong thread
December 28th, 2019 at 10:11 PM ^
If you can't win 11 games per year at USC you suck.
December 28th, 2019 at 10:34 PM ^
Entitlement culture runs through the whole university. It’s gotta be tough to convince those kids to actually put in the effort required to be successful. It’s really impressive what Pete Carroll did with them. At the time I thought any schmuck could win at USC but so far several schmucks have failed. It’s unbelievable how much talent is wastes at USC.

I would be thrilled to have John Baxter back. He was statistically top special team coach. Don’t be fooled just by one MSU play. The special team improvement before and after his year was significant. Fans were excited to see the special team on the field.
