J.J. McCarthy: Staying at Michigan for entire college career

It's a subscription Detroit News article but I think the one sentence says it all.

J.J. McCarthy: I'm a Wolverine and will be for the entirety of my college career.

that's another 'i told you so'.  this came up a couple times late in '21.  JJ is a special kid and his commitment, loyalty and intellect are such that he has his sights set on decades from now, not just days or even years from now.  he knows he'll be the starter either this fall or next.

and i'll say this:  i think cade is highly likely to stay no matter what happens in the QB battle.  not a guarantee, but again, the character these two have is exemplary and i would not be surprised that he sticks it out, too.

Just curious - why do you think that about Cade?

Based on this year, he seems like a big time team guy.  At the same time, if he loses the job this year, he could transfer after the season with a degree and two years left to play.  I imagine he will be highly sought after by Power 5 programs.

not saying 'no way, no how', but what i am saying is that it is far less likely than the many 'fans' here that are secretly ecstatic to say, 'he gone!'.   you are right he would be highly sought after and he might leave.  i just think his bond with his team and his/our school is such that he is less likely to leave.

I think Cade has a great attitude and his leadership was a real factor in the team's turnaround. In retrospect, his Rutgers speech really did seem to mean something, or at least represent behind-the-scenes leadership that meant something.

I hope that the loser of the QB battle stays through the 22 season; there's a good chance they'll get serious playing time due to injury or circumstance or whatever, that we'll need them to contribute.

But the loser might leave before the season; that happens. And they are likely to leave after the season if it appears that the QB competition is over.

And I believe that should not be a mark against either their character or their love for Michigan.

In the world in which they live, the world in which they play, the winner of the QB competition is likely to start for the next two years. There simply won't be a three-year QB battle. And, frankly, that wouldn't be good for the starter, either. If Cade loses, spends the year as a backup, and leaves... every MIchigan fan should cheer him on with gratitude. Because what he has done for this program cannot be overstated.

If they both go through fall camp it would not make sense for one to leave. Injuries happen and they are both getting playing time. The way JJ plays he will take some hits.

Rosters are set and your not walking into some new program to start week one without knowing the offense.

That gives you a cushion until we hopefully win the Dante Moore sweepstakes.  Then Dante can come in as the heir apparent for two years.

It’s the presumption that bothers me. We have two great QBs. Cade led a Big Ten Championship team. That says something.

They both really love Michigan that’s for sure

you are (almost certainly unintentionally) vastly overstating my position about harbaugh.  i always clarified/qualified it with 'its a non-zero chance that...' or 'i'll be surprised and disappointed if...'   i was of a mind that harbaugh would not leave.  i was genuinely surprised about the vikings trip, but i also was ultimately proven correct that he wouldn't leave.  no more, no less.

Staying and leaving are absolutes. Can do one or the other, ?

We can argue, perpetually, about what impossible or highly improbable conditions would have to line up for our beloved Weird Jim Harbaugh to move bride and kids away from Dad, etc.. And we *have* done that to a riduculous extent.

But if the bet were made: going or staying? The staying bet wins. Was our XM probably thinking his bet was in serious jeopardy? Only he knows that. Lol.

I too though thought JH would stay. I too was sure that I was about to be wrong (not a first for me). But, thankfully, he remains.

From everything I've heard, and as a vikings fan I've heard a lot, the vikings weren't in a rush to make the decision and Harbaugh felt they weren't as excited about him as he was about them and thus, pulled himself out of the running.

I love XM, but him claiming victory here seems a bit iffy. If the vikes wanted Harbaugh, he was gone.

'victory'?  maybe not like that.  but being proven to have the right final result, yes.  and again, it really stands more in contrast to the many who either wanted to get rid of harbaugh or were instantly proclaiming, 'he gone!!'

and could you please report to the album thread and list 'dark side of the moon' as one of your favs (if you haven't already), otherwise user name will not be checking out.

easy to misinterpret that in cyber-space.  what i'm saying is that the character traits of loyalty and love for our school and his teammates are more important to him than the other benefits of transferring.  i am not implying that anybody that transfers is some type of scoundrel and indeed, for many i am very happy for them and hope they get on the field and do well.
