Is the MLB allowed to rescind the safe call and give Gallaraga a perfect game? I haven't seen the play yet but it sounds like it was a pretty obvious wrong call from the reaction on here...
I think a couple years ago when C.C. Sabathia almost threw a no-hitter and it was blown in controversial fashion, the Milwaukee Brewers tried to appeal the call to the MLB, I'm not too sure of the details but I know the appeal was overturned. I'm guessing the Tigers would try to do this if possible, even though it's not likely that it would change anything.
IIRC they tried to get the one hit ruled an error (which it should have been), but MLB wouldn't reverse the call.
At the very least, the scorer could rule it an error and at least salvage a no-hitter. I doubt that Selig will do the right thing and call it a perfect game. Remember, this is the guy who stopped the all-star game once in a tie after 11 innings!
I'm all for instant replay, but they need to find a more reliable way to implement it (tennis's seems pretty much infallible) -- high-speed cameras pointed at each base would be a start. I've seen several home run calls made wrong on replay. The current system is just enough to allow the crew to get some bad calls wrong twice while not enough to correct some (I have one in mind) other really awful calls.
are they allowed to? Well, considering that Selig changed the definition of "no-hitter" and "perfect game" a few years ago, yeah, they're most certainly allowed to.
Will they do anything? very unlikely. The most I'd expect is that they'd acknowledge the wrong call was made (from what I've heard, Joyce has done that already). I suppose it's possible that they could order the game replayed from that point (Donald at the plate, 2 out), but I wouldn't expect that they'd reverse the call. (The official rules seem to refer mostly to protests of games that are lost on a questionable call, not to games like this.)

i'm not even a tigers fan but that was the biggest highway robbery I have EVER seen in a game. They should make a rule just because of this game that the league can go back and review shit like that. He deserved a perfect game and its really a shame that he got so fucked. Great game by Galarraga. I almost feel bad for Jim Joyce for the shitstorm about to ensue on him and probably his family...
This type of thing is terrible for baseball and makes Bud Selig look like a dinosaur living in the dark ages. Dude needs to get off the nostalgia/tradition train and get replay like football. There is nothing poetic or pure about a game with no replay. In fact, I would argue that replay gets the call right and corrects things. Joyce made a mistake. If he had replay, it would be over-turned and he wouldn't be the biggest A-Hole in Detroit right now. He would be releived to know he didn't take away Galarraga's place in the history books. I don't completely blame Joyce. I put more blame on Selig for sucking as a commissioner and not understanding how to evolve his sport.

Yeah, but I doubt anything will come of it. MLB is such a joke when it comes to their officials, I doubt they'll even be able to push this needed change against the weak union that the umpire maintains. I just feel horrible for Galarraga - you must lose a perfect game on a play on the field, not by some ump's brain fart.
If this doesn't do it, nothing will. What utter horse shit. I'm not a Tigers fan but that man stole something from Galarraga that he is unlikely to ever get the chance to replicate. I know umps are only human, but come on man. You have to get THAT call right.
I hope so. I feel it benefits the umpires more than anyone because they don't have to be perfect at their job. I can't even imagine sports like football, hockey, or tennis without replay anymore. It's helped tremendously. I think baseball should follow suit.

This gave me the exact same physiological reaction as Turner's half courter in the BTT. The surge of whatever it is that went through my body when Dickerson said safe is something I hope to never feel again. And then to get home and see the replay.... tragic.

I think that anytime something like this happens, the rage level generally goes downhill something like this:
