Jim Harbaugh talks Rashan Gary
“The final 12 hours were just a culmination of a relationship,” he said. “Jen Coney, Rashan’s mom, has carried the most water. She is an outstanding parent. She wants what all the parents want for their sons, and that is the best for their sons.
“We have a great relationship with Paramus Catholic high school. They do a great job.”
He listed the coaches and even the school president in what he noted should be the continuation of a long and trusting friendship with the school, which has become a U-M pipeline. Gary, he said, is “going to flourish” at Michigan, and not just on the football field.
“He visited Michigan four times and connected with the people here,” Harbaugh said. “When he was here on his last visit, he was heading back to New Jersey and they had finals. He had to start studying, so he went into a room and for three hours he studied. He wasn’t up and down out of his seat, going to get snacks, drinking Diet Cokes … he studied for three solid hours because they had finals coming up. That’s really impressive.
“Rashan carries a 3.7 GPA. He works for things, wants to be the best in the classroom and excel in sports. With that kind of work ethic and what we do - we give them great support, coach them – I think it will be a great relationship. Our players, they’ve been around him a lot now. He’ll be part of our ball team. There’s nothing better than being part of a ball team.”

Recruits do not go to Columbus to play school anyway. Probably safe to say that Gary is quite more educated already than what comes out of Columbus or Staee.

I've sort of stayed away from all the profiles, videos, etc until yesterday to avoid the hype but man, he seems like a really good kid. Good at football, of course, but seems like a good person, period.
Also having Bart Scott be your mentor seems like a good life choice.

He seems like a great kid; confident but not full of himself at all. I saw an interview of his this morning and he said something about why he chose Michigan that really struck me: "I chose Michigan because I want to be a student instead of just a football player."
That pretty much says it all.

Great to hear that he's got such a good head on his shoulders off the field too. Good work ethic will go a long ways in all aspects of life.

I do wish Rashan hadn't put the "3 years" out there in his announcement, but keepin' it real he will be ready for the NFL by then.

if he wants to, he could have his degree by then ....

He doesn't need to do anything.

and he ends up being a catalyst of bringing to life a ferocious Michigan D that attracts other great talent from across the nation, i'll be fine if he is only here 2-3 years. Better that than not having him at all. Harbaugh has the "potential" of delivering what no Michigan fan has EVER seen since Yost dominated. Yes, I am talking more success than what Bo saw and delivering a solid NC unlike the shared one Michigan had to endure back in 97 when Osborne retired.

I think what he was trying to say is "after 3 or 4 National Championships." Going 4/4 is hard to do...

I disagree.
This guy has a 3.7 GPA and, according to JH, has the discipline to sit down and study solid for 3 continuous hours.
If he's out in 3 I suspect he'll have his degree done in 3 as well. This is an impressive guy and I don't believe his mom will let him leave school without a degree either. She strikes me as a person who is appreciative of quality in education.

If he is ranked as a top 5 NFL prospect, he should leave regardless of whether he has a degree or not.
He can always take the Shaq route and come back to finish his education.
February 4th, 2016 at 9:20 PM ^
University of Phoenix degree is toilet paper which is what Shaq went back and got...supposedly. Many organizations won't allow UOP for tuition reimbursement. Many HR people file resumes received from UOP gras in the circular filing cabilnet. Not all of course.
And, again, I disagree...these kids really need to finish their educations before going into the NFL for so many reasons it's not even funny. Not the least of which on NFL Monday Night Football the guys saying "XXX high school" when everyone else is saying what college they went to sort of stick out!
The NFL should REQUIRE a college degree to play. I think all professional sports should but that's just my 2 cents anyway.

the Juwan Howard route?
February 5th, 2016 at 8:01 AM ^
Unless one founds an internet startup unicorn (1 billion in market cap), no degree exists that will pay as well as an NFL player.
And with the risk of injury effecting your draft status...
Kill it for three years, be a NFL first rounder, he can always finish his degree during the offseason.

I bet he goes pro but still works to get his degree. Just seems like he's that kind of kid.

The fact that Gary said he wanted to attend Michigan to be a student not just a football player in his interview is a bold statement. I say minimum we will have the big fish for 3 years. Hopefully the full 4 years but considering how great he can become through Harbaugh's coaching he might get pulled early to the NFL hopefully not

get a jump on degree progress as well. There's half a year, plus a few spring/summer classes here and there, and it's entirely possible to graduate in 3 years, especially given the support football players receive. I think Gary is hinting more at early graduation than abandoning his degree for the NFL.
