What would the ratings for a Michigan vs Alabama National Championship be like? .....just what if, you know....

Fans either love us, or love to hate us! And, Michigan/Bama for the National Title would revive the ratings of the playoffs. It maybe would be the most watched college football game since Texas/USC 2006.

Clearly you're not on Twitter.

Michigan gets crazy hate, in part because of Harbaugh, in part because we're a proud and prestigious progam, but we have 1 national championship in like 75 years or something crazy.  We're constantly the joke.

I don't think the hate is like it may be for some other programs, but I don't know if there are very many nationally hated programs outside of Notre Dame and maybe Bama, Clemson, OSU, USC?  College football is a national sport, but some things are still pretty regionalized (that a word?) - it's hard to hate a team you NEVER play.  I'm guessing ND is one, because of what they represent, Bama would be 2 and Clemson and OSU would probably 3a and 3b.

...and I've lived in Columbus, they hate us too...and if we ever started beating them again, you'd REALLY see it.

Got me to thinking...who are MY most liked and most hated teams?

Liked

  1. Michigan (huge gap, nothing else comes close).
  2. UNC (has nothing to do with football, have always liked the school).
  3. Texas (same as UNC...I'll root for them if they're on, though that Eyes of Texas thing about did it for me).
  4. Northwestern (they're usually just so sweet and innocent).
  5. Charlotte (I love adopting up and comers, getting in on the ground level...I actually watch their games).
  6. Arizona (not sure why, harmless).
  7. Washington (also not sure why).
  8. Vanderbilt (see Northwestern).
  9. Stanford (I love my Pac-12 after dark).
  10. Maryland (love their relentless pride in their flag).

Hated

  1. Ohio State (small gap, but definitely a gap).
  2. Michigan State (a medium gap after them).
  3. Notre Dame (then a big gap).
  4. Nebraska ('97 still bugs me, another big gap).
  5. Tennessee (see above)
  6. Wisconsin.
  7. Penn State.
  8. Auburn.
  9. South Carolina.
  10. Duke (obviously because of basketball).

I don't like post-Spurrier Florida, not a fan of LSU or Texas A&M (that yell practice thing is creepy and looks like a Klan rally, just saying). Don't like Iowa, Minnesota or Indiana.

...absolutely no one asked, but needed to kill some time before bed. Life of a part-time insomniac!

Twitter is a great barometer if you don't take the loud mouths out of context.

It's a place where most of the world is...and sharing their opinions...how can you tell me it's not a valuable way to get a pulse on what's going on?

If that was true...why is everyone so outraged about the impact Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have on our society, our elections, and us as human beings?

If it was all play-play, how is it so effective if it's just a loud minority?

That's bullshit.

Ask them what he's done to be thought 'mean'.  Those responses would be hilarious!  I bet all they can come up with is 'what's your deal, man', the handshake with Schwartz, some tweets, and the complaints about OSU 2016 officiating.  You know, the standard stuff that he is universally blamed for without any context whatsoever...

The interesting part of their answers would be the reasoning/context behind it, whatever is driving that opinion.  And again, I'm betting its all just following along with media BS...

I wish they'd just be honest and say they don't like him because he's weird. I'd accept that reason - he IS a weird guy. Just rubs people the wrong way based on that alone.

I get it. I feel the same way about James Franklin, honestly. He's not a bad man or anything (AFAIK), but he rubs me the wrong way.

Wait....OU, KU, NE and Texas fans tune in to watch Harbaugh/Michigan lose big games?  The only one on that list that should not be worrying about their own team losing big games (or basically EVERY game) is OU.  And weren't they kind of known for losing big games for a number of years?

After living in Ohio for 25 years, I can confirm UM gets plenty of hate outside East Lansing.

Now, living in Tallahassee, my 12 year old son and I went to the NC State vs FSU game two weeks ago. He decided to wear his UM hat and jersey to the game.  He was taunted by grown men no less than 3 separate times by fans in MSU and OSU gear around the stadium.

The hate is real and isn’t going anywhere, despite how often the other side wins and claims dominance.

I've been flipped off on a very early Sunday morning in DC wearing a Michigan shirt by an obvious OSU fan/grad. That's just ribbing, and I think it's awesome you can be anywhere in the world and some grad of MSU and OSU will mention the Punt-block TD or 62-39. It's all good fun, not hate.

My wife envies me, as her UT shirts might as well be invisible outside a couple states.

But comments about Harbaugh have almost always been positive.

Bama might not be in the playoff if they lose to UGA.

Regardless, this year the playoff will do big numbers. People are back to watching sports, I read NCAA football viewing numbers are as high as they've been in over 5 years.

The past year we've dealt with no fans, weird seasons, players in and out, players opting out, games postponed...and we told all student-athletes the year doesn't count on their eligibility.  Not to mention, a global pandemic. You also had a president telling people not to watch because of one reason or another.  It was a bunch of things.

Numbers were terrible, but I don't think it had much to do with fatigue of Bama/Clemson. It just didn't seem to matter to a lot of people. I know I didn't care as much.

MLB playoffs ratings were WAY up. I'm willing to bet NBA and NFL are up.

Folks are back in front of the TV.

I know I've watched more college football this year than I have in the previous few years.  I used to be the one starting the late night games thread and talking to people on here while watching Pac-12 after dark...I've just gotten back to enjoying all of the other games that are on.

(Although the endless commercials are going to push me away)

No they don’t, just buckeyes and the tuckers. My company has an office in Birmingham and they’re very humble folks that have a healthy respect for Michigan. I live in Ohio so that gets me some ribbing as they’re no fan of the Buckeyes but also don’t take them as a serious threat to unthroning them. Obviously there’s a true burning of dislike for Urban and follow his every move in the pros. Now if you ask them about auburn then grab a beer and get ready. I used to catch many of my games in airports pre pandemic and have had lots of civil conversations with fans of every conference and we all agree that Buckeye fans are assholes. I once watched a buckeye fan in his PJs almost throw fists with an Arizona fan in a PF Chang’s lol

Michigan has been part of most of the top watched games all season.

Michigan/Washington did numbers, as did Wisconsin, Nebraska, MSU* and now PSU.

*Michigan/MSU was the most watched game of the year by FAR. I believe Bama/TAMU is #2.

What would the ratings for a Michigan vs Alabama National Championship be like? .....just what if, you know....

Presumably less than a Michigan vs Staee or even a Michigan vs Penn State National Championship.

A couple other interesting things about CFB ratings this season.

The Michigan-MSU game was the highest rated game of the year in all of college football with 9.289 million viewers.  Over 400k more than the second place game (UGA-Clemson)

The noon time slot has had the highest ranked game in 5 of the 11 weeks this year and had the second highest rated game in one week.  The noon game will likely be the highest rated game this week (MSU-OSU) and next week as well (OSU-UM).

1. A Michigan vs Alabama National Championship would break the meter.

2 I’ve read and heard many times that more people tune in to see Michigan lose than to see them win.

3. Michigan vs MSU week nine delivered college football’s top audience of the season with over 9M viewers on FOX. Even Mich vs Neb week 6 got 4.6M viewers.
