Jessie Minter ‘Master of the 4 point play’ Appreciation Thread 🧙‍♀️

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on November 27th, 2022 at 2:32 PM

The Ohio State offense is the best in the country. They simply cannot be stopped for 60 minutes, especially on their home field with good weather. The only hope to defeat this team is to contain them, out-scheme them, deceive them, and clamp down when the field gets tight around the end zone. What we witnessed yesterday was true wizardry by the best coordinator in the country.  I thought losing Macdonald along with Hutch, Ojabo, and Dax would devastate our defense. But I was wrong, way wrong. Minter, the 4 point play maestro is even better - way better. Yesterday’s game will provide so many of us a lifetime of good Michigan memories. Thanks Jessie Minter for the major role you played in improving our quality of life as sports fans!

The ability to force the #1 offense in the nation to kick FGs instead of scoring TDs means that you take 4 points off the board for your opponent.

Ohio State has demonstrated that they can have a 28 point quarter at the drop of a hat. Holding them to 3 points in the second half is a ridiculous accomplishment.

He's incredible. He just goes in at halftime and solves the puzzle. It also can't be understated how good these players are at executing the adjustments. Just magic all around.

I often wondered during Harbs first few years (the Don Brown years), besides nothing - just what in the fuck does the coaching staff do at halftime?  They seemed to make ZERO adjustments to what was happening in the game.  Like a stubborn - this is how we do it and we'll live or die with it.

That seems to have taken a complete 180 these last couple years.  Especially this year where with just one or maybe two exceptions M has completely dominated the 2nd halfs.

Jim Harbaugh is simply doing what he saw when he played at UM in the 80's.  Bo and his staff were very good at making those fine adjustments at half time.  The 1986 Fiesta Bowl against Nebraska would be a good example.  Trailing at halftime by 11, UM stormed back to win that game going away... UM made changes, NB did not, we win.

Definitely a skill to force teams to kick FGs as opposed to getting TDs. Think we had a 1 for 3 performance when the Bucks got a TD in the red zone plus whatever Stroud did with that strange pass that turned into a turnover.

Mike MacDonald was a great coordinator. Jesse Minter has been superior, especially on 3rd and 4th downs (which was a weakness last year and cost them the MSU game). His adjustments at half and in the 2nd half have been elite. Lock him up!

Maestro of the second half, and half time adjustments.  Fantastic job this year.  Holding TOSU to 23 points at home, and 3 points in second half on a weather perfect day tremendous close to regular season.  Something like 6 points allowed in second half's since Indiana game.  Amazing.

I’m hearing lots of (well-deserved) appreciation of Minter. But Clink’s coaching of the defensive backs seemed like it was at least as much a part of this Ohio State win. Just seems like he should get a bit more credit around here…

Minter just like Harbaugh is the son of coach and he shows it by being a true student of the game. His dad was the head coach at Cincy for a while and was also at one time the DC for Notre Dame. I didn't realize it but Harbaugh has Minter's dad on staff as an analyst.

My take is that McDonald laid the groundwork for Minter. McD was implementing the sound zone concepts after years of Don Brown M2M. For the 1st year, look what McD was able to do on defense compared to what OSU's DC Knowles did this year.

Minter actually implemented the true "amoeba style" Ravens defense this season without having to tweak for amazing Edge rushers like McD had with Hutch & Ojabo. And his success builds off of what was started last year.

Kudos to Minter for ability to handle tempo - especially in The Game. And he deserves the Broyles for the 2nd half adjustments. I still think our Defensive staff is in the top 3 in the NCAA. Clink with DBs, Elston with DL, Jaybaugh with Safeties, Helow with LB's. Unload the money cannon on the assistants. Also, I assume Rick Minter has helped while being a Special Assistant.

Yes, special thanks indeed! When you mention the players who moved on from last year’s defense it reminds me of Harbaugh at B1G media day where he made a point of saying twice that he thinks this year’s defense might be even better.
