Jake Fisher's Oregon Trip
According to a TomVH tweet looks like Jake is headed to Eugene for a visit. This has got me a bit worried as the facilities and weather there are a pretty nice. We really need Fisher in this class for the future OL growth and he would be a great addition at 6'7" and 273#'s. Anyone have any info on how the last visit went?

that Oregon is probably the biggest threat.
No one thinks we're out of it, but no one is incredibly optimistic either.

Hoke met with him yesterday, but Fisher is keeping things close to the vest. I think our chances with him are at best 50/50.
January 28th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^
Sam Webb said that Fisher is going on the trip alone, without his parents, which might make him realize how far away Oregon really is. For what it's worth, Sam thinks we have a good chance.

I heard Sam say that yesterday, but I can't remember if he had a "gut feeling" on this one. I usually am good if he says that.

How's that, better?

I, of course, believe we have the greatest facilities in the country, but I'm biased. Oregon's facilities are bound to leave quite an impression on any 17/18year old kid. Especially one that's never seen anything like them before.

...Phil Knight! I'll become a committed Adidas and Brooks customer if we lose Fisher to O.

Eh, looks like a tacky new wave mall sporting goods store.

The weather is nice here? What!? I haven't seen the sun since December.
January 28th, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
I lived in Seattle for 13 years and the one thing I'll always remember is my first visit to see my sister I took my heavy winter coat. It wasn't long before I realized it was overkill since the temp was low to mid 40's my whole visit. So comparatively speaking the weather is nice there this time of year. Yeah you might not see the sun all that much but here in Mid Michigan it's pretty much the same thing except 30 degrees cooler and lots of snow.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
Yeah the winters are mild, but it drives me crazy. On the weekends when I want to play in the mountains it is always raining. I have lived in the Rockies and Michigan, and for some reason Northwest weather is my least favorite.
The other thing is people are much friendlier in the Midwest. Overall though the Northwest is a nice place to be.

it's not like Jake hasn't seen his fair share of snow. I for one miss Michigan winters, if only for a few weeks a year.
If Jake makes the Oregon choice it won't have much to do with weather IMO.
January 28th, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
But see that's my point he's seen his share of winters and it can wear on you. Once you see what it's like on the pacific coast you may find it appealing. Is it going to be the deciding factor? Of course not but it could play a part in his decision. Weather clearly played a part in McClure's visit.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:13 PM ^
California weather =/= Oregon weather. Also, Fisher is from Michigan.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
I am the oddball in my family for loving the mild winters of the NorthWest. I have a lot of family that grew up in Michigan and quite a bit from Traverse City, and they all miss the snow in wintertime (some live out here, some just visit and shake their heads)
If he chooses Oregon, it's because he thinks they will better prepare him for the NFL and win National Championships. And the facilities are where athletes spend the majority of their 4 years, so it definitely is the key they consider.
Now, I hope that Michigan's Facilities equal or better Oregon or anyone else, but I have no way of knowing that. But he won't make the decision because of the weather.
I do know that.

Dude, I'm a born and raised Michigander who is a Michigan alum at USC for grad school. The weather on the West Coast kicks A2's ass. The last 2 weeks have been 75 plus. I've been chillin on the beach gone hiking, and seen so much amazing hot tail. SoCal def has its benefits. I mean I love Ann Arbor and loved my time there, but for a high school kid this place can be pretty tempting....
January 28th, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
I agree. I'm an Ann Arbor in a larger, more happening city, with a milder climate, but I miss home. I don't know what people would think about Ann Arbor this time of year...to me it always felt like something out of Norse mythology. But cold Fimbulwinter or no, I chose UofM, and I feel a long way from where I belong. Funny old thing, feelings...
January 28th, 2011 at 7:59 PM ^
Oregon is definitely the biggest threat. Fisher might be a better OT for the spread right now, but he definitely has a big enough frame to add enough weight to become a solid pro style Tackle.
January 28th, 2011 at 8:03 PM ^
....but it still sucks. It will be mid 50's with rain. But, he'll have female nike models/cheerleaders/hostesses asking him to "just do me."

Im up north in Seattle and hate. I prefer Michigan weather top PNW weather any day. Atleast you can see the sun in Michigan.
January 28th, 2011 at 10:21 PM ^
Here, here. Sothern kids hate to see the snow. Midwestern kids miss it when they're gone, whether they realize it or not. Who can say why.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
Actually, a lot of Southerners are fascinated by snow. Denard tried to take some home (in a plastic bag) after his recruiting visit.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:55 PM ^
Let's keep that one to ourselves...

Jake Long...nuff said. Stay home Jake!

about an education and degree from UM, then we're in good shape. If a degree is simply a commodity to him, with one degree pretty much like another, then it will come down to things like the strength of the football program, and how much he likes Eugene, including its weather. All Brady Hoke can sell with regard to the first is the future; Oregon is now. Regarding Eugene vs. Ann Arbor as a living experience, there's not much that Hoke can do about that. The Pacific Northwest is pretty special, while Ann Arbor is definitely an oasis in the Rust Belt.
January 28th, 2011 at 9:49 PM ^
Obviously I want this kid to come to UM, but if he goes somewhere else better to lose him to Oregon than that green mistake in East Lansing.
January 28th, 2011 at 9:53 PM ^
nothing like going half way across the country to play in from 60k fans.
January 28th, 2011 at 10:33 PM ^
He might think that trumps wings on a helmet.
January 28th, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
Nothing trumps wings on a helmet!
January 28th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
But their 60k is louder than our 110k. Oregon fans are crazy, though the interesting shape of their stadium certainly helps (especially that awning over the luxury suites).

"nothing like going half way across the country to play in from 60k fans."
for a national title?
January 28th, 2011 at 11:36 PM ^
sucks to come away with nothing, though.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:32 AM ^
Oregon has made exactly one national-title game in school history (and lost). Let's not pencil them into the pantheon of storied programs just yet.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:09 AM ^
Fuck Oregon.
