Izzo shows his true character?

Submitted by Double-D on January 31st, 2021 at 9:26 PM

This is a direct quote from his press conference after the loss to OSU.

“If I get those kind of shots and we can’t make them, we’re not going to win any games,” Izzo also commented. “The beginning of the year we’re making all of those shots.”

I can’t read that and not hear Izzo blaming his players and telling everyone it’s not his fault they Sometimes people use wording that exposes what they are all about.  Substitute we and it sure sounds different.

No, he's not.  He's an arrogant prick who....

'calls Michigan arrogant every chance he gets, yet behaves that way himself and turns the screws on Michigan (students) in the media at every chance'.... even impassioned more during the football "henchman" Mark D' years.  Izzo just loved that.

He admittedly has talked about him "controlling the Izzone" - (dog-whistling his fan-base in particular against UM) for example the Dan Dakich example during a presser on Feb 2017.

This guys walks around like he owns msu and he basically does.  He's got half the state of Michigan in his back pocket.  Their fans WANT him on that wall, NEED him on that wall.

Cops have bailed him and the program out for 'good seats in the suites & the Final 4" & a signed basketball for their desks - - - regarding let's just say "team improprieties" for 20+ years.

Everybody knows it.  I'll admit - he's toned it down a notch after Nasser, D'antisportonio leaving in disgrace and Beilein kicked his little ass on the court --  but, he's still an arrogant little troll.

The SHAME of Iron Mountain.  I'm sure he is a cool guy "if you're a Spartan".

What exactly is he whispering ?

"...you suck...",

"...get skittish...",

"...get tunnel vision...",

....lock onto Bell only...",

"....ignore DPJ wide open deep, Shea...."

just kidding, but funny nonetheless.

"I" get these kind of shots, "we" can't hit them.  Translation: "I'm doing my job, the players just suck."  In fairness, he may be right, but there's a better way to say it.

He's definitely got a healthy-sized ego.

A couple of years ago I was at the Breslin and there was a huge mural in the lobby detailing Izzo's accomplishments.  Not the MSU program's, just his.  So it said (among other things) "1 national championship."  You'd think they would want to note that their program has won two national championships, but apparently, since Izzo wasn't there for the other one, it's not worth mentioning.

He’s wrong though. Watching that game I was thinking to myself wow MSU has no actions they can go to to get some easy buckets. That’s why their offense goes in a hole and dies at times. Izzo isn’t drawing up the right plays, and it devolves into hero ball. Scheming up ways to get mediocre shooters a bunch of inefficient 2pt jumpers isn’t winning basketball.

Yeah I gotta be honest, I guess it depends what colored glasses you are wearing but that quote strikes me as factual.  I don’t think it was meant in any other way.  Now if he wanted to mention turnovers, that’s a problem you can actually control.  They make some mind boggling turnovers and frequently look like they have no idea what they are doing out there.

Unfortunately he's not entirely wrong. It's college basketball--weird shit happens during both the regular season and the tournament.

Michigan's lone loss came on the road to a team they beat by 25 earlier in the season. Looking at the schedule the game against MSU is in East Lansing.

This is still the least frightening MSU team in years, though.

Minnesota's really good at home though - and we were shorthanded.

At any rate we probably will reschedule the game at Crisler.  I don't think the game in Breslin will be our only one.

I agree that the basketball is in much better shape to avoid a surprise letdown against a vastly inferior team, but there is still that part of me that is a little nervous. As bad as MSU has been, it is the perfect storm for them to have a game where they suddenly can't miss a shot. They have guys that are capable of getting hot, and I've been a Michigan fan long enough. Hoping for a historical beatdown though.

He has no idea what to do with this team.  No PG, no Centers/bruisers - and really no knock down shooters.

Combine that w mediocre to bad defense - 13th place in the BIG is your proper landing spot!

The funny thing is that he put the team in this position. He recruited an undersized un-athletic white kid and a combo guard who is an inefficient scorer as his heirs to Cassisus Winston, keeps trying to clone Xavier Tillman to no avail, and has seemingly forgotten how to get his team to play defense despite on paper this MSU being a good defensive team

He's been a fantastic coach for the duration of his time at Michigan State. I know Michigan fans want to assume every Michigan rival coach is secretly satan, but they are often just other coaches. I appreciate good tribalism as much as anyone else, which is to say, it's a bit silly. Thank God Ryan Day is so milquetoast that Michigan fans haven't found something to go ballistic about for eternity. I eagerly await the day. That being said, really happy MSU is terrible.

With what he did to and didn't do with that Bridges/JJJ team is mind-numbing . He was once an excellent coach- is now a jaded, soul-less man who has lost his way. It is what it is-making excuses for these realities is not a noble thing. What a joy to have Juwan heading up Michigan basketball...the contrasts could not be more stark.

Uh Bill Self?

He's on the downside now.  But for 15 years his players would get better every year, until they were seniors.  Think Tragic Johnson becoming Denzel Valentine.  Drew Neitzel looking like Loyer his freshman year to becoming an all conference player

It was the annoying thing about him.  He's lost or limited his ability, maybe its the type of recruit he's getting.  Maybe its how players can transfer on a dime if you push /criticize too much.

But off the court ,  how he handled the noticeable problems in his program.  Makes him a jerk.  Didn't Watts get benched for being late for a meeting thsi year .. But Payne Appling raping a girl.  Gets the Dantonio.

I don't think winning and righteousness go together, no. In fact, I'm fairly certain that righteousness equates all that well with any number of things that it's often equated with, religion etc. He often says he wishes his players played better in a way that really ruffles Michigan fans. If there were a ton of stories by former players about what an awful person he was, I'm all here for the pitchforks. But we don't have it. I prefer Beilein and Howard, but I realized I'm also inclined to like them because of confirmation bias.

I mean, you hear players and coaches routinely say things about performance on struggling teams. Luke Doncic just said it looked like his teammates weren't trying. Is he a terrible teammate? I realize I'm pissing into the wind here, but I wish people spent a bit less time trumping up claims about what miserable coaches Michigan plays against. I prefer just to exult in the losing as opposed to any sort of argument around moral superiority.
