It's time to offer Alex Malzone....

Submitted by School 4 the Gifted on

OK, so I know it's been discussed before but it's now time to offer Alex Malzone. Based on this tweet from Steve Lorenz, it looks like he is visiting in the next week so it's extremely likely he gets his offer soon.

2015 QB Alex Malzone talks about his #Michigan throwing session yesterday, will visit within the next week (VIP): http://t.co/VPNSispERY

— Steve Lorenz (@TremendousUM) April 29, 2014

If not, there will be plenty of teams in on him very shortly:

#Buckeyes, #Northwestern, #BBN, #Vols, #Louisville, #Hoosiers and #NCState will all see Malzone throw w/in 2 weeks: http://t.co/RuFSxv1He9

After performances like this:

Rivals Camp Series Detroit QB MVP Alex Malzone of Brother Rice. http://t.co/bIF1KjbxW1

— Branden Hunter (@JustCallmeBHunt) April 27, 2014

and this:

Brother Rice QB Alex Malzone made noise in Atlanta at the Elite 11. Not a surprise for those who have seen him. http://t.co/PdE46IDU1t

— Mike Wilson (@MikeWScout) March 23, 2014

and this:

I'm hearing that @alexmalzone KILLED it in his throwing session this morning! Crisp, accurate... very few balls hit the ground

— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) April 28, 2014

It's time to show him some love and offer him. He will very quickly go from our 3 star backup plan, to the consensus 4 star that got away who we offered too late. Unless, there is a legit shot at one of the elite QBs that nobody knows about, let's secure the accurate pocket passer that we've been looking for.

He reminds me of Drew Brees, only faster and smarter.

Seriously, though, I did see him play a few times, including the State final against a very good Muskegon team where his first 15 passes did not touch the ground. I fear we will rue the day if we pass on this boy.

A bird in hand...

How DARE you start a thread with only 108 points!  Don't you know that's offensive to the old guard around here?  The neg-birds will surely be around soon...at least I've cancelled one of them.

My secretly recorded conversation with this "old guard" you talk about:

OG: It's the world! You go to 11W, the low pointers are just treated like dogs.

Me: So do you have to treat them like that too?

OG: The low pointers, there's low pointers and lotsa pointers, do you understand?

Me: And are the low pointers less than the lotsa pointers?

OG: A hundred percent, fifty, a hundred percent.

Me: And is that right?

OG: It isn't a question—we don't evaluate what's right and wrong, we live in a society. We live in a culture. We have to live within that culture.

Me: But shouldn't we take a stand for what's wrong? And be the change and the difference?

OG: I don't want to change the culture, because I can't. It's too big and too [unknown].

Me: But you can change yourself.

OG: I don't want to change. If MGoBloggers can't do what I want, I don't want the MGoBlogger. I'll find a MGoBlogger that will do what I want! Believe me. I thought you were that MGoBlogger—because I tried to do what you want. But you're not that MGoBlogger.

Yes please hurry and make the offer now Brady.  With a scant 10 months until signing day there's barely time for him to put us on his "Top 15" list at this point.  And one thing I've learned through the years is that when a 16 year old high school kid tells you he's going to sign his LOI he means it!  Early committments never ever get broken.

Waiting is NOT beneficial when it comes to QBs, especially if you have a SOLID option like Malzone who, from what's being said, is a bird in hand....

Even if we fall in love with another QB in a few months, most likely that QB WON'T be an option because he's already committed somewhere else or already has relationships with schools that already offered.

I understand your concerns but if there's one area (and there actually may only be one area) I have complete faith and trust in Hoke its recruiting.  If he's proven one thing to me its that he's a certified killer on the close.

Now.....winning a few more games next year will definitely help him get the name on the line that is dotted in February but the man knows his stuff on a sit.

We definitely need to offer, not only for Malzone, but to build a pipeline. Brother Rice has not sent a scholarship player to Michigan in forever. With their new coach, it'd be a great start.

Reschke last year, we offered late but if we offered early who knows. I know we probably didn't have a shot at him anyway, but for a school that continually contends for the state championship, seems like a no brainer to recruit there. I think we offered Chris Colisanti a few years back who ended up at Penn State? TJ Lang is an OG for the Packers. Just saying, they have a new coach, don't let MSU take root there.

It's my understanding that he is a Michigan super fan, like he has been going to games forever and it's his dream school and all of that. I know things change, but I'm pretty sure we would be his number one school no matter what.

It's also time that the Swim coach offered my daughter.  She has been at the swim camp the past several years.  She has swam hard, performed well and will without a doubt commit on the spot.  Offer away coach Bottom.

I don't know anything about him but Scout has him as a 4*, ranked #13 QB. There are only 4 QBs ahead of him that haven't already committed. Yeah, please offer. Or, I guess if Nuss plans to take the position in another direction i.e. dual threat... does Malzone have wheels?

You have Kearns as the #2 QB and according to rivals his only offer is SMU. Is there a reason he hasn't gotten more offers? At the same time Malzone is only a 3 star with offers from Pitt and MAC schools. Hard to believe we can't get a higher ranked guy with Nussmeir in charge.

I think height might be an issue (he's 6'2"). There's also a good crop of quarterbacks in California, which might be slowing things down. The local schools are going for 5-stars (Rosen to UCLA, Town to USC) and guys like Brady White, Jake Browning, etc. sort of thin out the ranks of offers. Once the dominoes start to fall, I think Kearns will get more offers, but we'll see.

I guess we will find out soon. At this point, an offer is either coming or its not. Nuss has seen him throw and he has been on campus numerous times.

I suspect that offer will come to fruition on the visit. Wouldnt make sense to have him come back to campus and meet with the coaches if Nuss didnt think he was up to snuff.

The only uncommited guy outside Malzone in the top 15 we had any noise with was Brady White from my recollection.  But it seemed like that noise died with the passing on (not the literal sense) of Borges.

White, Wimbush, Gentry, Edwards, Jones, Francois, Kearns, Johns, and Sills are all guys that will generally be at least in the same ball park as Malzone. That's not saying all are better or worse, but I expect the coaches to figure out their preference and make their offers based on their evaluations, not because Scout says X of the top 15 are already taken.

Yes, I just posted it to give people a frame of reference.  I think Malzone is lightly regarded on the blog because he started as a 3 and is working to move himself into a general 4 star recruit.  Compare that to Shane who started early as a 5 and due to mono/camps began to fall back down to a 4.  Everyone here had Shane walking on water due to that early 5 and most are like "meh Malzone" due to early 3.  In the end they might both be very similar recruits in terms of rank but the perception is very different IMO.

And for all we know the 21st ranked QB recruit might be the top in this class in 4 years - it was just for reference purposes.

Is go through their due process, evaluate all applicable and potential targets, and make their consideration of a many number of factors. Once they have gone through their due process, including evaluating the necessary amounts of tape, watching the prospects throw in person, and getting the requisite background checks, I then expect them to go through the process in which they deem best to eventually land the player that they believe will help them win games.

If that's Malzone, cool. If it's someone else, cool. I expect them to complete that process though, and not offer someone that doesn't fit their process because "it's time" when there is some time to work with.
