But I'm THE Jimmy Clausen!

Submitted by jtmc33 on
Front page of CNNSI and their Draft coverage: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ Can't say I've ever enjoyed anyone sliding down the draft boards as much as I have this year. This is my second favorite picture of Jimmy --- after the "photo of punishment" against UM his freshman year.

His agent had to have at least mentioned this scenario to him at least once. Once Buffalo passed up on him at 9, he was in trouble as far as a first rounder goes. Yes, that includes Tebow being taken because some team was bound to buy into him. Not saying that's what WAS going to happen, but that Clausen and his agent were at least aware of the possibility.

everyone kept saying he was going at X in the first round after his junior day and was asking if he was going to NY for the draft. He hadn't decided at the time but he kept saying that he wasn't sure where he could be drafted, 1st 2nd or 3rd round. I would think Not being in New York probably had them thinking a fall out of the 1st round was a possibility

... and disliked Jimmy for his antics, I grew to respect him as a player for his toughness. The kid kept on getting clobbered but came back and played through pain and injury. While he might be questionable in the character department ( I don't know him so I am only going off of what I have heard), he has talent and if he applies himself, he could end up being a very good NFL QB. But it's sad to see many Michigan fans go off about him now. He's no longer a college ball player.

Well he made the decision 5 months ago, and at the time I don't know anyone expected him to fall out of the first round. I thought he was just being modest at the time of the most recent interviews but looking back it doesn't look like that was correct.

I hate ND, but I like Clausen. I still think he'll be the best QB in this draft. He could even start next year with teams like Oakland picking early in the second round.

But I definitely respect him as a player. I was a big doubter of him when he came out of high school because of the low-level competition he faced, but he put up incredible numbers this past year. I think he is easily the best NFL QB in this draft. If the Broncos really needed a backup fullback, then I'm fine with their choice. Otherwise I think they are going to be kicking themselves down the road.

Really.. Clausen over Bradford? I don't get it. Yeah we saw Clausen every year and he tore our secondary apart this past season. But just because you didn't see Bradford this past year doesn't make him worse than Clausen.

Bradford to me was no different than any of the other OU quarterbacks who put up gaudy numbers this decade (though he is a little bigger physically). He ripped up the Big 12 but couldn't do anything when he faced a defense with a pulse like Florida (much like Jason White against LSU and USC). Despite having a solid running game, his offense only scored 14 points in that game. Not the kind of performance that makes a guy the number 1 pick in the draft in my book.

after this year's ND game that as much as I didn't want to respect their passing game, it would be downright ignorant not to. You could argue how much of that was reflective on Jimmah and how much was due to the antics of the receivers, but either way I came away reluctantly impressed. And also giddy as hell after Forcier-to-Mathews :)

I agree - I don't like to see anyone hurt, particularly a shot to the head. Hate to say it, but from where I stand, Clausen seems to me to have the most upside of any QB in this year's draft. He had amazing accuracy last year and proved his toughness. He is a true pocket passer which is exactly what most NFL teams seem to want. He somehow manages to do things that make him a target for abuse.

Hey man, don't shoot the messenger (OP). Take out your frustration on SI. I mean, let's be realistic here. If a Mich QB that was similar to Clausen slipped out of the first round and the article was front page news on SI, we'd probably see the article linked on a ND blog somewhere.

Don't be so MGoDramatic Irish. Although concussions are a real, and dangerous, part of football... this photo was taken BEFORE he continued his college career without missing a start, and BEFORE he will be drafted and making a career in the NFL. An injury -yes. A life-altering injury-No. Save your faux-angst for those reveling in career-ending and substantial injuries. You're acting like his Mother. And I wasn't professing excitement for his injury... I was professing excitement for a spoiled, pompous, savior of ND getting knocked on his ass and having reality set in (both on the football field and on draft day). That photo summarizes a lot more than "an injury". Ever hear of a picture says a thousand words?

So what was your intent when you started this thread then? Your celebrating his slide in the draft, and i don't really have any problem with that. But then you try to highlight your celebration with the CNNSI photo by stating its your 2nd favorite photo of him. Now that I am annoyed with and I will respond to it with the same tone that I perceive in your post.

I love the content you bring to this board. In fact, I'd love it if many fans from many teams would slip over here more than once in a while. I don't get the tone Michigan fans (or probably fans of all teams) take when it comes to The Gloat over other teams, and especially players, troubles. Seems kind of sad, too, coming from a fan base that professes itself to be above the fray. Funny how one guy says it took and act of Gawd for ND to beat UM while under Claussen one time (Threet/Sheridan)--but it also took an act of complete dumb-dumbness for Charlie to call two passing plays this year, keeping time on the clock and giving UM a chance to beat them this past season. I think Jimmy will do well in the NFL.

The fact that the first two QB's taken (and maybe the 3rd?) are spread QBs. (One mostly a runner). Or that ND now is running a spread offense too. So they could be waiting as long as Michigan, if that were the case. Or that he's got about 12 picks to get drafted higher than Pat White....

Per Peter King's note that you have a reputation for being "petulant", may I remind you of the words of Dr. Henry Jones, Sr., (and they fit right in with that Catholic education you just cut short, but in case you missed a lecture or two from your Divinity classes): "Only the penitent man will pass ... Penitent ... Penitent." In other words, Jimmah, the NFL and its system are bigger than you are. A bit of humility will help you immeasurably. Sincerely yours, NJIA

I've been on Mgoblog for about a year and a half. I don't pay much attention to other teams, unless they're playing Michigan, so the comings and goings of players like Clausen have passed me by. Why does everyone hate the guy so much? There is something about him that's irritating, and yes, he definitely looks like an emu (nice call whoever came up with that one), but there must be more to it than that. What gives?

I think Clausen is going to be a very solid pro and is by far the best quarterback in this draft. At the same time, his own fans couldn't refrain from punching him in the face. To act like he isn't at the skinny end of the douchebag bell-curve is to completely ignore reality.
