Howard better figure out the Assistants before he does anything else

The next big question is if Howard is going to find his own assistants.  I think he would be wise to stick with what he's got right now.

Michigan assistants under Beilein:

Saddi Washington made $305,000, Yaklich made $300,000 and Haynes made $275,000.

Yaklich recruited his ass off the last two years and Washington is a top flight assistant.  Howard better think about locking both of them at Michigan.  I don't know whether he can do that because they might be butthurt that they weren't selected for the head job, but they have all the recruiting connections (including Wilson and Bajema).

Hopefully we try and keep our current assistants and give them all pay raises using the difference in salary between Howard and Beilein

Fuck!! Clearly he is not listening to the enlightened commentary and astute analysis that is the hallmark of this message board. I'm so depressed. Howard will be lucky to last two years. His kid is as high a priority as retaining Yak? Warde fucked up.

I think Washington is likely. Yaklich I would put at 30%. They're not pleased, he's already been looking at Texas, and Howard is more defensive minded. Just doesn't seem like a great fit next year with Howard

While I would love to keep one or two or all three assistants because I like them, it’s not imperative that Howard keeps them. I’m assuming he doesn’t have a personal relationship with any of them. He’s gonna want people he trusts. And that’s his prerogative. While it’d be nice to keep Wilson and Bajema, that shouldn’t be a real factor. Howard has to feel comfortable with his staff

I heard he's not having his intro until the 30th.  Beilein took his time to leave, Warde took his time to start the search because he wanted to go the South Africa, and Michigan is taking its time to have the presser.  All of this waiting around is going to leave us with no Yaklich and no Wilson.

We hired a coach in a week and a half. That’s pretty good IMO. To act like they’re not talking with Yak is just silly. Wilson is irrelevant. You don’t make coaching decisions based on recruits. Guarantee that Howard makes contact with him ASAP because he’s not a dummy. But he may or may not get to hang onto him. Wilson has lots of suitors.

What a negative Nancy you are. First the OP and then this nugget?

What does the timing of the press conference have to do with anything? It isn’t required before they sort out assistant coaches. And it isn’t required before contacting recruits.

Beilein’s “waiting around” was not in UMs control. And he didn’t “wait around”, he took the job at a time that wasn’t convenient for UM. Big difference.

As for the SA trip, they have phones. And email. And - this is just a guess - UM has other people in the athletic department to work out details/logistics.

As for Yak, maybe Howard has no interest. Or maybe he will announce his entire staff on the 30th IF that turns out to be correct.

And don’t be that asshole that comes back claiming “taking their time” cost us Yak or Wilson if 1 or both are gone. If they are, it will be for other reasons.

This age of instant feedback seems to make people so impatient.

Take a deep breath and think positive thoughts!

Also should keep Sanderson.

I dont think they'll be able to hold onto all three assistants. 1 or 2 plus Sanderson and I think they'll be ok.

Howard is entitled to hire his own assistants. I hope he keeps Yaklich, but if not, that’s Howard’s right as the head man. There is ZERO guarantee that Yaklich and Howard would work well together, or be on the same page like Yaklich was with Beilein.

I agree that finding assistants is a top priority, but we shouldn’t go doom and gloom if Yaklich leaves over it. I do hope Yaklich is given every reason to stay, but if he doesn’t, Michigan Basketball will survive without him.
