Hope for Pahokee #Eating Kickstarter Daily Update - Over 80 Percent Funded!

Submitted by Butterfield on

The weekend was slow but progress was still made in the effort to help out Tae Odoms charitable cause, Hope for Pahokee, and Tae's desire to create a community garden in Pahokee, Florida.  What this tells me is most of us spend more time on MGoBlog while we're working than on the weekends, lol.

Almost 29k has been pledged to date, leaving a little over 6 grand to get to the goal.  Considering that just 5 days ago the drive was 20k short, this is a MGoMiracle to be in this solid of a position to close the deal.  But just because we're approaching the target doesn't mean we don't need your help!  If you have the means and desire, keep donating and lets fund this thing early and then see how much extra cash we can raise for the cause!

If somehow this is your first time seeing this, a brief summary:  Tae Odoms (Former WR at UofM) is raising funds to build a community garden in depressed Pahokee, Florida, his howmetown along with several other current Wolverine players.  He has started a "KickStarter" with a goal of 35k to build the garden.  If the pledge drive falls short of the 35k, no money will go to the charity.  If you donate, you will only be charged once the drive hits the mark and passes the end date of the drive.  Lastly, tons of cool "rewards" are available for various different pledge levels - great shirts, hats, and other apparel for fairly modest donations.  You will be sent a follow up email if/when the drive is funded and it is then that you will give your mailing information and request any particular sizes/colors.

Sorry if this is too close to the update posted last night, but my schedule pretty much only gives me this opportunity today.  Oh, and a big thank you to MGoUser "meechigan" for helping while I was unable to yesterday!

Thanks for posting. Great to hear the wonderful response. I'd be curious to know how much of the response came as a result of mgoblog. (i.e., the power of Brian:  if you have mgoblog behind you, you can do incredible things!!)

However, since your other post is only 5 below this one on the board, couldn't you have done something like "EDIT: 80% raised as of 9/17" to the title below? I guess since there aren't too many posts, the board isn't too cluttered, but sometimes editing is good instead of new posts.

Wasn't my post, I was unavailble yesterday so I had asked someone to fill in (and "meechigan" kindly obliged).  So I didn't have editing powers.....otherwise I could have tried that.

As to how much of the success can be attributed to MGoBlog - I have no scientific way of figuring that out, but based purely on observation, the drive seemed to be going rather lethargically until this sites user base was made aware.  And then 12k was raised in 5 days.

You can adjust your pledge, but as far as pledging twice I don't think so.  Some of the higher reward levels offer multiple rewards so that may be an option for you.  But if you wanted, for example, shorts and a t-shirt, you'd probably best be donating at the combined level for both of those and emailing Tae through the kickstarter website.

Everyday I click on the Kick Starter project i just stare at it because It seems so unreal to me to see people that I barely even know or never even met take so much pride into helping us. I knew that we had support and people that care about what we're trying to do but when I check my emails, Facebook or twitter and We have people really trying to do all they can do to help us reach our goal and giving us advice and offering their hand with whatever they can help with makes me feel good. Words can't explain how that makes me feel but I want to say thanks to you ALL especially MGOBLOG i don't think we could've got as much support as we did if it wasn't from all of you writting and spreading the word and dedicating your time and energy telling the world about hope for pahokee and the community garden project. if I could I would respond and thank you all individually but I don't think it's enough time in a day to do so but I want everyone to know I appreciate all the support.

Tae-   You're doing all the hard work here, we're just giving you a little boost because that's what Michigan alums do, we help each other in any way possible.    I can't wait to see the updates and pictures when the project actually becomes a reality - Pahokee is very lucky to have you as one of its native sons.

You're a great representative of both Pahokee as well as the University of Michigan, Tae, and we're happy to help!

I don't know how closely you've been following these daily threads, but someone in an earlier thread brought up the possibility of Hope for Pahokee applying for a federally recognized charity status so donors could receive federal tax deductions for their donations.

It's probably a pain in the butt, but there are fellow alumni who donate quite a bit both for the charity, as well as the tax break.  I would rather give to your organization rather than the IRS...just a thought!

You guys are a playing the biggest part to me by spreading the word and we can't thank you enough,Yes it's our project but it wouldn't be anything without the support you all have been giving.

I'm so excited to see how the project progresses... There's no doubt in my mind that it will get funded...

Thanks, Tae, for being a great representation of The University of Michigan
