Hokelore (espn article)
Didn't see this gem from Rothstein's story discussed yet, thought it was worth sharing:
Before one spring game with Carr, in which the winners of the game would eat steaks and the losers would have hamburgers and hot dogs, Hoke gave a pregame speech. He became so worked up he started rattling on about the steaks in front of his team in a Michigan meeting room.
"At the end of the speech he said, 'Men, we're going to be eating steaks,'" said former Michigan linebacker Mike Elston, now Notre Dame's defensive line coach. "Then he drank a whole bottle of A1 sauce."
I thoroughly enjoyed this piece and highly recommend it:

So our head coach is Booger from Nerds?
That's reassuring...
September 7th, 2011 at 10:50 AM ^
If Booger can keep us from getting shellacked by a middling SEC team in our first bowl game in three years, then I'd prefer to stick with Booger.

One win against WMU really has your bird chirping doesn't it?
September 7th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
Not at all. I said "If he can." I'm not saying, "He's the best coach EVAR and is going to return us to glory because he beat Western!"
I believe the use of the conditional "if" allows me to say that, in the event that certain things transpire, I would have a stated preference. If the aforementioned events do not happen, my preference would most likely be different.

How the f-ck does Rothstein know that Hoke is a perfect fit for Michigan? If I anything, I think the real story is that Hoke is the perfect fit for the Michigan fan base, at least for now. And as we all learned, that's at least half the battle for a new coach.

"And as we all learned, that's at least half the battle for a new coach.
"
I don't think that is the case for most fanbases actually. Ours? Yes, which is so very sad.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
Do you really think so? In my sheltered mind I would like to think that fans of other big-time programs would be just as demanding of a new coach but if fear that you might be right. Regardless, the past 3 years set things up very nicely for Coach Hoke and his staff, I think. He's coming in at a great time and seems to be doing the important little things to win the crowd [Gladiator reference], that's for sure.

All the "cultural stuff" (for lack of a better term) would have gone away had RichRod won. There are many reasons that winning didn't happen, which don't need to be repeated here, but the losing exacerbated the cultural stuff. (And in some cases created it in spectacular form. I don't think Josh Groban would have happened given a better year).

Different fanbases don't have different identities? Really?
September 7th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
Dudeness, it is only true of fanbases that are worth being a part of.
I'm sure Eastern Michigan bought into the Ron English hire without dividing their fanbase.
If you don't see the difference in the Michigan brand with Hoke at the helm vs Rich Rod, you're not getting it.
I'm not even making a judgement on which one is a better coach, I'm just saying there is Nike and there is Asic. They both sell quality shoes but the marketing couldn't be more different.

is that when you only fill your cop car with gas measured by the metric system?
Is that was part of the movie, then I really doubt it was as funny as everyone claims.

That, and the pointing.
(And the fact that so far he's done everything right as a coach)
September 7th, 2011 at 12:13 PM ^
I would like to believe he got the length of his tie right every time or that he never accidentally put his undershirt on backwards, but it's just not plausible!
September 7th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
The part of the story that he left out is when Hoke urinated all over the hamburger and hot dog buns.
September 7th, 2011 at 11:34 AM ^
Let alone chugging an entire bottle, you can handle any defensive mishap or special teams collapse that's thrown at you.
September 7th, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^
That was a great story.
Here's another humorous take on Brady's motivation:
The Audacity of Hoke.
September 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
I don't think that anecdote is very significant- Hoke drinks a bottle of A1 before EVERY game.
September 7th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
I enjoy the Hokelore. I hope pretty soon that we may even get some Hoke fan fiction.
