High school football at Michigan Stadium

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

If the SEC bans satellite camps and spring practice off campus, the next logical step is to invite those high schools here to play games here on campus. IMG vs. Paramus or IMG vs. Cass Tech could be played on labor weekend and they could use our facilities to practice. You could call it the Big House Classic. This seems like something Jimmy would do to help recruiting and give players who aren't going to be playing in college a chance to play in a big time stadium.

I think this may be against the rules.

They were going to have the MI-OH all-star game at The Big House and at columbus in rotating years but the NCAA prevented that from happening.

Outside of MI, yes.

OH televises games weekly.

Massillon-McKinley is the only HS football game that you can bet on in Vegas. It's a big deal in OH. That's why they produce great talent down there. No not TV, but the emphasis put on it by everyone.

Massillon practices in an NFL-level facility.

I went to high school at a big time sports school in the suburbs of Atlanta. Here in the Atlanta area there is a game live on TV every Friday night. Having lived in Grand Rapids and Atlanta I can tell you the difference in high school football is huge. Down south there is definitely a demand for it. It's not uncommon for these big time high schools to have 10,000 people in the stands and the game being broadcast live.

MHSAA is a joke. When I was in school you couldn't play in an all star game and still be eligible to play in any more sports. Not that I had to worry about that, but any football player that played in the Army All American game couldn't play any spring sport to close out their high school career.

The MHSAA does a great job of one thing only: putting the "amateur" in "amateurism."  Otherwise, they suck as much life out of sports as they can.

Here's a great solution: invite four major out of state teams to play at the Big House on Labor Day.   Two could face each other in the afternoon and two in the evening.  Then they can say they "wish we could have invited a team from Michigan, but the MHSAA won't let it happen."

Michigan wins three times.  The out of state coaches are happy, the out of state players are happy and most of the instate football coaches are ecstatic that someone is showing the principals, career administrators and AD's on the MHSAA board how stupid their rule is.

high school athletics.  they aren't 'the government', and they aren't  some statutorily created or empowered body.  they are some folks who took control and the schools let them, and now get lead around by the nose.

i think mgoblog should run high school athletics.  whose with me?

Those are the championship games, though. They need big venues for that. In the 90s they used to be at Crisler.

They did have the PKC at EMU but then moved it to Wayne State, a D2 school.

The MI-OH all-star game is played at Findlay, a D2 school.

May have been an NCAA thing passed to prevent recruiting at D1 schools.

Not 100 percent sure, but I'm pretty confident there's also a MHSAA rule that says you can't play an out of state team if the distance between the schools is greater than 300 miles.

Correct. This is not allowed by the MHSAA. The worst high school athletic association in the country. The school I was coaching actually got in trouble a few years ago for attending a 7 on 7 tournament at Notre Dame. South Bend is obviously within the 300 mile limit, but a team from Arizona was there (we didn't play them) and that violated the rule. Incredibly stupid. Michigan high school are also banned from appearing on TV except the state finals on Fox Sports. That why you see games every weekend on various ESPN channels, but without a Cass Tech or Lowell or some other top Michigan team.

about 5, 6 years ago on espn in regular season matchup. Perhaps they've relaxed restrictions in this regard?

They are aware this has become a regular part of football season; two powerhouses from various states, possibly the same state, squaring off against one another on live t.v. This gives these players a chance to be judged by college coaches against top notch competition and I would imagine on more than one occasion, it was the difference between offer being extended and not being extended.

But didn't think this was worthy of a new thread.

I attended the Grand Rapids Christian vs Byron Center game. Those of you that may follow high school basketball here in West Michigan probably have heard of Xavier Tillman, a GRC player that Kentucky has offered a scholarship and Izzo is after hard. Anyway, I noticed a couple a familiar faces talking Mrs Tillman for a good 15 minutes . And what do you know , it's two well known MSU boosters multi millionaires , Mike VanGessel and Pete Secchia.

If Tillman ends up being a Sparty, I will be the first to have evidence (took pics ) of how Izzo's dirty ways began and put MSU basketball on probation

so obiously it wasn't "god awful" imo. There are certain actors, Stallone, Eastwood, Willis,  Arnold to a lesser degree and a few more you watch, knowing the acting will be second rate but almost always will entrertain you for the hour and a half you've paid for.

Heartbreak Ridge was by far worse than this, but that is because his acting, which doesn't usually matter, was so damn awful it made it difficult to set through. If you haven't lived through the shit these actors are trying to portray you won't often be disappointed, but he simply didn't dedicate any time to study his character as a "Drill Sergeant," so it was difficult watching him trying to muddle through. And the artistic liberties taken in that movie, in regard to an NCO fighting with an officer, and so damn many other instances where the intent to simply make a movie instead of making one that was somewhat believable became far too transpartent. This made it difficult. I know it's a tough, ego challenging transformation for many actresses to go from being leading lady to someone's mother, and I don't think Clint is  even going to attempt to make that transition. If anything, his movies will probably become more difficult to watch going forward.

into Canham's genius. Would not have thought about it if not for your post, but looking back I can imagine what a great, once-in-a-lifetime experience this must have been for players of both teams. And, obviously, the amount of Goodwill this provided UM was immeasureable.

There has been a high school football team playing at the big house for well over a decade. They wear deep blue and piss yellow uniforms and are named after a groundhog like animal. Do take my word for it, go see a game on Saturday this fall, you will agree.

A double header.  Bring back Band Day! [though I think they should do Band Day for the Spring Game]

The university could make it a big recruiting weekend for a lot of potential students- athletes and non-athletes alike.
