High 4* TE Theo Johnson leaning Blue?

Submitted by jbibiza on December 9th, 2019 at 11:00 AM

For those of you who do not follow recruiting, Johnson is the number one player remaining on our board. He is rated 95 on 247 and is their #69 player nationally. He is committing today at 1:45, and it is between us and Penn State. Sam Webb thinks he might be leaning our way but no gut feeling.

Concerning to see PSU's recent success with utilizing TE's in the passing game.  Was nice to see Eubanks and McKeon get used for some long passing plays against osu when Johnson was in attendance.

PSU’s leading TE - Freiermuth (botched spelling im sure) announced he is returning for his season; so maybe that will sway Theo to UM.

Depth chart might slightly favor UM with McKeon’s departure. Although, UM does have Eubanks, All and Schoonmaker, so who the hell knows.

I feel like Michigan flipped the script here. Was definitely Penn State’s to lose at one point, but then postponed his earlier commitment date, visited Michigan twice, and his mom has always wanted us. Penn State’s OC is probably leaving - he’s top choice for the Old Dominion job and PSU fans want him gone anyways. Proximity and recency favor us, would be a huge pickup.

Depends on how you choose to define meaningful really. At one point Michigan had three consecutive victories over P5 division champs. Is a game only meaningful if it’s against OSU? Is a game only meaningful in hindsight if it affects the conference race? Are rivalry games meaningful? Are ranked matchups meaningful?

i suspect different fans will have different answers to those questions. Blowing out a top 10 ND was pretty meaningful from the perspective of beating a top 10 rival. Not to mention the narrative that the season was taking at that point.

primacy and recency bias says he goes blue - his first and last visits were with us, with others sandwiched in between.  maybe magnus can share his thoughts.

Not all guys develop at the same rate. If you think about offensive linemen and want them all to be college-ready, then only the 6'5", 300-pounders would be highly rated - even though we know people like Taylor Lewan exist, who was like 240 pounds as a senior. A lot of athletic defensive ends are 205-210 pounds coming out of high school.

Johnson might get there, but he's playing Canadian high school football. It's a much different sport.

UGA, Bama, OSU, Clemson, SEC are always "in it"

We nearly lost Gary and Dax after they were heavy leans and committed.

DeShawn Hand, LaQuon Treadwell, Isiah Wilson, etc, etc

UM is very often the bridesmaid, the school the commit would have chosen if not for other benefits.
