He's not yet here, but more importantly, I think this raises the QB floor, but does not necessarily lock in a starter. He'll have to earn it, and I'm hoping Shane and Alex make it very tough on him. Maybe you can say if he comes we've at least found the back up.

Getting Rudock is great as a safety net but I sure do hope someone currently on the roster can beat him out.

If someone does I hope it's Morris because if it's Malzone or Gentry then we'll see everyone transfer.  Even worse would be O'Korn emerging as the best QB when he can't even play this fall.  I'd like to see the depth chart be...Rudock/Morris, Speight/O'Korn, Malzone/Gentry.

Who will transfer if it's Malzone or Gentry?  Obviously O'Korn and Ruddock won't since they just transferred in.  I supposed Morris or Speight could but...who cares?  It's not that I have anything against either of those kids, but if guys want to transfer because they don't have the job - so what?

If a true frosh came out of this group as the clear #1, so much so that other QBs felt they didn't have a shot to take the job from him, that would be an awesome problem to have.  It would mean we had the starting QB locked up for the next 3 years.

Say Malzone wins the job and it looks like he's a 4 year starter.  Morris will transfer, Speight will transfer, Gentry will transfer and then we'll have a hard time gettting a 2016 recruit like Peters.  It would be a disaster.  It's got to be Rudock, Morris or Speight this fall for the sake of the program.  If Malzone is the next Drew Brees or something then great but I doubt that.  It's more likely that he'll be just a little better than the next guy who will leave the program.

Really?  Gentry will decide to transfer after being on campus for 1 month to compete for the QB position?   I think you are underestimating the competitive nature and confidence that most good players have.  Just because in your scenario Malzone is the starter this year, that doesnt mean someone like Gentry couldn't improve enough to beat him out the following year.  I guess we better not let any QBs play until at least their Junior years, or else we will never get any QB recruits according to youl

We should hope that we develop a program where QB's don't play until at least their 3rd year.  Look at Alabama.  AJ McCarron wasn't the starter until his 3rd year and played 3 full years.  Look at USC.  Mark Sanchez didn't play until his 4th year.  Cody Kessler didn't play until his 3rd year.  If you have first and 2nd year QB's getting PT it can cause problems for your recruiting and depth.

Matt Barkley played all four years he was on campus as did Carson Palmer. At Alabama, JP Wilson played all four years.

Additionally, the notion that these programs are successful solely because many of their qbs didn't play immediately is awful awful logic. Very few programs in the country start going qbs because young qbs are rarely very good.

Remind me how Texas A&M did on the recruiting trail when their freshman QB won a Heisman. Or how Ohio state did on the recruiting trail this season with a freshman garnering Heisman attention.

The Matt Barkley years were horrible for USC.  Simple question, does a 1st or 2nd year starting QB affect recruiting and depth?  Look at Florida State.  Coker transferred because he didn't want to sit behind Winston and now Winston is gone and FSU is screwed.  Winston played his 2nd year.  It gets even worse when you have true freshman starting.

We had no depth at QB and didn't recruit any good QB's until Mallett who would have been a sophomore when he first started.  Playing young QB's creates a viscous cycle of older QB's transferring who can provide depth and recruits not signing until they know the starter will be gone which means you are starting another young QB all over again.  It's much better to have 3-5th year guys battling it out and bringing in good recruits who know they probably won't play until year 3.  You get quality starting QB play and depth this way which is why the USC's and Alabama's do this if they can.

I know, most teams don't even have good starting QB's, let alone good backups.  The teams that have good starters and depth on a consistent basis don't play QB's early.  It can throw a wrench in your program.  Look at FSU and TA&M.

Rudock would be a nice addition and it really is nice to see depth being constructed at this position after lacking it for quite some time. Part of me would like to see someone on the roster now still emerge as the primary QB because that would speak volumes as to where the position is headed now, but I still would like to have Rudock's experience and leadership among the names at that position. Very beneficial on the field and on the sideline, I think.

Gregg Henson basically said it was a done deal a few days ago.

"Upon graduation from Iowa, Ruddock will be announced as a transfer quarterback to Michigan with the opportunity to play in 2015."

Rudock was the #29 ranked QB by QBR last season.  If you take out the players who are graduating or leaving early he's a top 20 returning QB.

We have a better than average starting QB. Typically that's good enough to win the Big Ten with stellar defense and a good running game.
