Hello Bob Shoop?? Defensive coach

Submitted by jbibiza on January 16th, 2020 at 3:47 PM

Lots of rumbles that we will hire Miss. State DC Bob Shoop to join our staff.

He has coached DBs much of his career so that fits with the need for a safeties coach.
No confirmation but lots of smoke and Wikipedia shows him as "Michigan Wolverines"

He is an elite DC who had the #1 SP+ defense in the country at Miss State in 2018, but he is not a good recruiter. He has a long history with Don Brown. If true, I wonder if this would be a co-DC thing with Brown retiring soon and Shoop being his replacement.

The 2018 Mississippi State defense had three 1st round NFL draft picks on it. They were abysmal this year. He's also not a good recruiter and we just lost our two best ones. This is a Jim McElwain type hire. Not what the program needs. Jim just doesn't get it. Recruiting is the lifeblood of your program and right now OSU is kicking our ass up and down the trail. Will only get worse once ace recruiter Kerry Coombs joins their staff. This is depressing.

No, I think I'll keep pointing out how woefully short our program is at meeting expectations. When is enough enough. 0-6 vs OSU? 0-8? 0-10? I mean Jesus it's not that hard to get some guys in here who are ace recruiters but no he has to hire fucking guys like Pep Hamilton, Tim Drevno, Mike Zordich, Greg jackson, Jim McElwain, and now Shoop who are big fat zero's on the trail meanwhile OSU is signing 9 top 100 recruits this year and you dumb asses think coaching is the problem and not recruiting? Laugh Out Loud.

So the problem getting past 9 wins at Michigan and beating t[tm]OSU is due to a lack of "ace recruiters"?

Okay.

So these "ace recruiters" you speak of would overcome other programs blatantly paying players, offering online classes, fake jobs, free cars etc.

Because they are "ace recruiters".

Keep on keeping on keyboard warrior.

Laugh Out Loud.

Me and Harbaugh have? You are either MSU or OSU educated. Online English classes, clearly. It is not Me have, it's I have. Therefore, the above-moron-level way to express your thought (as ridiculous as it is) is "Harbaugh and I have". You're welcome, troll.

Read the "Myths and Half Truths:" in the diaries section.

I think the problem is getting kids ready for games, not a huge talent gap that we have been led to believe.

Culture is a problem and that's on the coaches, Harbaugh makes changes every year and is showing signs of trying to fix What doesn't work. He might seem stubborn because of his personality, but his staffing decisions say otherwise. Hopefully he is seeing the culture problem right now and is trying to fix that.

His diary is a bunch of bullshit. Anyone who has followed UM football recruiting since Moeller knows top 5 classes were the norm for pretty much the entire 90's and early 2000's. It wasn't until the later Carr years and Rich Rod era that it became a problem, and even then Hoke was able to sign two top 5 classes and for a long time had the #1 class in the country in 2014 before the rash of decommits.

Furthermore when UM hoards all of their football players into general studies and admits kids like Marquis Slocum and Mario Manningham who were barely qualifiers I don't want to hear shit about academics.

If you're mad other schools are paying players then either lead the charge to legalize it or get on board and play by the same rules because there is nothing virtuous in not paying college athletes for their labor.

And even if everything you were saying is true (which it isn't) the solution isn't to hire ANOTHER shit ass recruiter. The solution is to hire the best recruiters in the country, build the best facilities, hire the best support staff, and put on the best on campus visits in the country. Michigan. If you listen to Allen Trieu and Steve Wiltfong podcast yesterday you would know UM needs MAJOR help in their recruiting department and aren't maximizing their resources.

So go ahead and bitch at me if it will make you feel better about our lord and saviour Harbaugh falling way short of expectations because the guy won't invest the time and resources into getting the best players here. Get ready for another 3 loss season everyone.

More on Shoop. Played at Yale.
Was DC and Safeties coach at Vandy  & PSU with Franklin.
DC at Tenn. for Butch Jones and then to MSU (ntmsu)

Since the other thread has gone to shit over recruiting. I'll throw this discussion point out there: How long would Shoop stay at Michigan? Seems like it'd be short term. If Brown was going to retire soon then you'd think Campanile or Partridge would have stayed.

Shoop's qualifications to replace Brown are strong. Say Campanile stayed, what kind of assurance would he have that he would replace Brown? I don't think that's something you should promise to an assistant just to keep him on staff for an open ended amount of time. Coach in waiting might work for a year.

That aside, are Partridge or Campanile the best Harbaugh could do for DC? If Don Brown had retired at the end of season I doubt either would have gotten the job. Shoop might have.

Yeah certainly a reasonable way to look at it. I just started from the premise that Brown isn't leaving soon given the recent defensive staff departures, going back to Mattison last year. Seems like Shoop wouldn't take less than a full DC job based on his resume. But maybe Shoop is more patient than those other guys.

It sounds like this is happening, but Football Scoop is a terrible source.

They reported two days ago that Art Briles was going to be named HC at Missouri State the next day. https://footballscoop.com/news/source-art-briles-to-be-announced-as-new-head-coach-tomorrow/

Not only did he not get the job, Missouri State's president said they wouldn't hire Briles under any circumstances. And they did hire Bobby Petrino.

You are right they are not authoritative, but they are right more often then not. It is a good spot to see if there is some smoke.

That president put on a show. You don't go down many levels of hell from Petrino to Briles, both have pretty sordid pasts.

He's the defensive version of Jim McElwain, Tim Drevno, and Pep Hamilton. People will try to spin this as a good hire but it's not. When you lose two of your best recruiters and you replace one of them with a noting burger in recruiting (Steve Lorenz confirmed that recruiting is NOT his strong suit) it's simply not what the program needs right now. No amount of coaching is going to make up for the talent deficit between OSU and UM right now, recruiters will though. Harbaugh just doesn't fucking get it and couples with Allen Trieu and Steve Wiltfong's comments yesterday on their podcast I doubt he ever will. We're stuck in purgatory of 3 loss seasons and annual ass kickings to OSU. And all it costs us is 7 million a year.

He also coordinated an absolutely horrible defense this past season but that is besides the point, he's being brought here to be a position coach not a coordinator. Position coaches need to be strong recruiters. We need better recruiters on staff to close the talent gap with OSU. Industry leaders in recruiting are echoing those exact same sentiments. Does your dumb ass want to keep fighting the fact that or just admit you were wrong?
