Harbaugh video message to UM students
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPuPHDfT6DY
Jim's message to students: Stay positive, Test negative. Cheer loud and proud from home. Wear a mask.
It's impressive to me that nobody in the football program has tested positive in many weeks (months?). Obviously they'd like to keep it that way. If the rest of the students act responsibly, they reduce the risk of the virus jumping from the larger student body to the athletes. There have been something like 700-800 confirmed COVID cases within the UM community to date. (I heard that statistic during an Alumni update zoom meeting from one of the Deans)

Have they really had nobody test positive, or have they just kept positive results contained through good adherence to sound procedures?
Nonetheless, I love his message and hope the students follow appropriately!
October 28th, 2020 at 10:43 AM ^
I think during Minny week presser he said they had a couple positives since mid-September but had no one out for the game.
October 28th, 2020 at 9:41 AM ^
Just because we don't know about it, doesn't mean there hasn't been a positive test. I believe Coach when he says nobody has tested positive and I have faith he will keep an open door to that. However, there is HIPAA, so it's a slippery slope I would imagine. I work at a high school, our district had a middle school teacher go out for "COVID". But we were all left to guess who it was because they couldn't even say that an employee tested positive due to privacy. Which I totally understand. Again, I would imagine Harbaugh would publicly announce that information, but wouldn't he have to have permission of the student athlete in order to do so?
October 28th, 2020 at 9:46 AM ^
Isn't there mandatory reporting through the B1G? If they don't use names then HIPAA doesn't come into play.
October 28th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
HIPAA doesn't apply.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:03 AM ^
HIPAA doesn't apply to saying your team hasn't had any positives
October 28th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
HIPAA doesn't apply period.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:31 AM ^
HIPAA doesn't apply or we wouldn't know some of the injuries status of football players.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:07 AM ^
Players sign a waiver allowing the release and publication of certain health info.
October 28th, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
Right. Which is why hipaa doesn't apply. I only say this for the benefit of others who may not understand why, not directed at you.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:07 AM ^
My question is how it doesn't apply? Do they waive that right once they become NCAA athletes? Is it only medical information as it relates to their ability to compete? I'm sincerely asking to become more knowledgeable on the subject.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:53 AM ^
He specifically said they did have some cases once students came back. They had some when athletics picked back up then had it under excellent control in August and then, unsurprisingly, they had some cases in September. How many he did not say.
All in all, it seems to me Harbaugh has been pretty vigilant and that has paid off.

Fleck said a TE (Eubanks) missed the game due to Covid. First I had heard that.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:41 AM ^
That's interesting. Any word from Fleck on our covid report this week?

Suspiciously eyes the guy coughing
October 28th, 2020 at 9:58 AM ^
On a team this big someone is bound to do something questionable and put the team at risk. It will happen I just hope that it gets contained quickly.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:15 AM ^
What is with these negative hot takes? Why must people interject their Covid crystal ball tarot readings into everything? Just like there won’t be sports in 2020–wrong. Big ten won’t have a season in 2020–wrong. “Someone’s going to contract Covid.” Okay, thanks.
October 28th, 2020 at 2:17 PM ^
Probably because it’s daily news during an impact in which a Mertz-like story may happen here—but didn’t happen at Wisconsin, so...what is your problem with sports related pandemic news again?
Oh, right: “everything’s fine here and it’s not a big deal so stop talking about it because they’re playing.”
As for UM, valid questions are being posed. Eubanks wasn’t at Minnesota. Nordin—was he there? Hmmm, it’s pretty easy inference to make that Covid has a role.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:08 AM ^
taking a guess, but i would imagine that we have our team sliced up and isolated even from itself. figure there are over 100 guys on the team, maybe 120 or so? i'm guessing you have practice and weight training schedules with the 1's v. 1;s; later on the 2's v. 2's, and so on. kind of like a submarine if you spring a leak in one area and close the bulkhead you can prevent the leak in another.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
Yep, I agree. Would be far worse to have position groups spending time together because even a mini outbreak would be far more likely to decimate an entire position. We have seen this happen to Minnesota's kickers and Nebraska's QBs.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:07 AM ^
I guess Minnesota spent too much time rowing in the same damn boat.
October 28th, 2020 at 3:37 PM ^
It's actually a longship crewed with burrowing rodents.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:26 AM ^
They call it cohorting at my son's elementary school. (In essence his cohort is just his class but it sounds cooler this way). Everything is done with your cohort and no one else so if someone tests positive they can be more confident that no one outside the cohort was in contact with them.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:25 AM ^
Yeah I don't have much faith in 18-22 year olds making sound decisions.
The Wisconsin and Minnesota outbreaks feel like they'll be the standard this season. Hoping we can find a way to keep the team and community safe, and reduce the extent of an outbreak when it does occur.
October 28th, 2020 at 10:45 AM ^
Normally yes, but I think they know what they have to lose
October 28th, 2020 at 10:31 AM ^
Harbaugh’s message is great and so is the team’s apparent adherence to appropriate health measures, but I’ll be shocked if we can go all season without infection.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:23 AM ^
I bet Ohio State doesn't have a single infection all season.
October 28th, 2020 at 1:59 PM ^
I agree, or it’s some token practice squad member just to make it seem like they are being transparent.
October 28th, 2020 at 3:23 PM ^
It is only because their team Chaplain was once known as the one and only Madam Cleo!”
October 28th, 2020 at 10:37 AM ^
Be smart. You have your entire life ahead of you. You can stay home for a couple more months
October 28th, 2020 at 12:07 PM ^
That first couple months ended in May. Then a couple more and a couple more and a couple more. I don't think this is a winning strategy.
October 28th, 2020 at 12:48 PM ^
Reel it in there sport. I think he was talking to the football team....let’s keep this thread open.
October 28th, 2020 at 1:01 PM ^
That's true, but only because so many people refuse to take it seriously. I'm sure you're aware, but we're currently having record breaking surges in about half of the country. Over 80k new cases every day.
October 28th, 2020 at 1:55 PM ^
We're always having record breaking surges in half the country. Currently so is Europe.
Shouldn't you be protesting this board and the playing of football?
October 28th, 2020 at 10:49 AM ^
This weekend is going to be a disaster covid wise. MSU weekend is going to have MSU kids coming to Ann Arbor for tailgates plus Halloween parties at night
October 28th, 2020 at 11:05 AM ^
Why are links never actually links?
October 28th, 2020 at 11:09 AM ^
So you're saying the links came ip negative.
October 28th, 2020 at 3:39 PM ^
Getting links right is a 9th level MGoSpell. Very difficult.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:13 AM ^
You’re making an assumption that no players have tested positive this year.
October 28th, 2020 at 11:38 AM ^
Harbaugh's real message to students:
If any of you fuckers even breathe on Joe Milton...
October 28th, 2020 at 12:06 PM ^
Yup ... "stay at home to cheer, be socially distanced, and wear a mask" ... and if you see a football player around campus, please cross the street and do not even make eye contact when passing them.
October 28th, 2020 at 12:20 PM ^
Hope his video helps
October 28th, 2020 at 12:24 PM ^
"It's impressive to me that nobody in the football program has tested positive in many weeks (months?)."
Yes this is indeed very impressive. But I can't help but feel like the team is traversing along the thinnest tight rope.

Go blue! Go Jim!
October 29th, 2020 at 6:51 AM ^
There’s always an element of frustration with winning Big championships, beating OSU and so on but there is NOBODY I’d rather have as our coach than this guy. The perfect guy at the perfect time. Brings an element of class, dignity and integrity to the UM.
Go Blue!
