Harbaugh targeting Jimmie Dougherty for offensive staff?

Not sure what "strongly considering" even means.  This could just be a ploy by Dougherty's agent to get him a raise, but if true, he'd be an interesting hire.

He's the OC/QB coach/asst. head coach at San Jose State.  SJSU had a really dynamic offense in 2013 but kinda sucked this year. (Maybe it was because of their Defensive Coordinator...)

He was on Harbaugh's staff at San Diego all three years he was there, plus 2 years after he left, serving in just about every offensive capacity (TE coach, WR coach, QB coach, OC).

Then he left to become the WR coach at Washington for 2 years before joining SJSU in 2013.  Might he be the next choice for TE coach?

I've been to PB a couple times in the last few years, and there were almost no bums. Definitely a great place, and if I move to SD it's definitely the place I'd go. That being said, in January it's not usually all that pleasant there. A cool 65-70 degrees is not exactly beach weather.

Public service announcement: SDSU is not San Diego.

Jim Harbaugh: University of San Diego, an FCS non-scholarship school

Brady Hoke: San Diego State University (SDSU), an FBS Mountain West school

Not trying to pick on you, I've just seen this so many times by other people that I had to say it hoping the location at the top of the thread would help.

I know there is a difference.  Toreros vs. Aztecs.  It was a not-paying-attention typo.  I went back to fix it when I saw what I typed, but it was already commented on by then.

I got too distracted over the buzz of Jim Harbaugh being the new Michigan State coach.

Not that it means much with regards to the search in question here, but Dougherty was recognized for his efforts in 2013 with a nomination for a Broyles Award at least, so his work has been noticed in the past. He had a hand in coaching David Fales through that rather prolific senior campaign that year too.

Certain coaching staffs are launching pads for coaching careers.  Look at the number of guys who coached under Bill Walsh, Nick Saban, Bo Schembechler, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, etc that have gone on to become D1A (eff FBS) head coaches.

Other staffs (looking at you Lloyd) don't produce many future HCs.  It may be a demotion in title and possibly a pay cut, but it can be the key stepping stone to upward mobility.

And we will need to get used to losing assistant coaches every year.  The nature of top flight coaching staffs is constant turnover.  The best guys all have the drive to become HCs.

The added benefit beyond outstanding coaching, is that in 15 years when HARBAUGH!! retires after his 14th National Title (2015 might be a rough transition), there will be no shortage of guys who came through the program that have HC experience.

SJSU ran a "west coast offense" under Dougherty, and it truly sucked this year. 116th in scoring (19 ppg), 94th in YPP (5.28). Last year it was much better but not elite-just solid.  I know this guy's not coming in as the OC but still.

That combination (poor #s + outdated philosophy) raises my hackles, though I know it's likely that Harbaugh is good enough to succeed with it.
