The national media is NFL centric. They are going to say he's staying in the NFL until he says he isn't. Michigan media is Michigan centric and they will talk about how it's all logical and the way it should be. This thing with odds is all pretty much crazy without words from the guy making the decision. I don't think there have really been any words from that guy.

Aside from family, the highlight of Harbaugh’s early years involves the hours he spent on college football fields. “A lot of times, I’d go to my dad’s practice,” he says. “I’d spend my afternoons messing around, jumping on the dummies.” But even better than practice were college game days, especially during the family’s years in Michigan. “I lived for those football Saturdays. The Michigan-Ohio State game was the biggest day of the year. It was better than Christmas,” he says with a huge grin. That helps to explain why Harbaugh, an all-league football, basketball and baseball player who graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1983, selected the University of Michigan over other colleges recruiting him as a senior, standout athlete. “Bo Schembechler said, ‘We want you. You’re coming to school here,’” Harbaugh says. “This was a guy I’d known since I was 10 years old. I really idolized him.”

Optimism from 'insiders' means very little. I will not feel confident about anything until a coach is introduced at a press conference. Remember what happened with Les Miles in 2007. 'Insiders' thought it was a done deal, when it wasn't. And the NFL reporters have just as credible sources as the local reporters. But they are different sources, who have different feelings / impressions (obviously) about what Harbaugh will do.

TL/DR: I don't think one single 'insider' has any more credible information than any other. They all know very little, except for the 'feelings' of those supposedly connected.

Remember 'insiders' have burned you in the past. Don't trust them.

According to John U Bacon, that report wasn't based on 'nothing.' But it wasn't based on anything substantial. There was contact between Michigan and Les Miles in 2007. Anyway -- what makes you think the 'inside' information being passed around right now is any different from that ESPN report?

that it was leaked to Herbie by Desmond or someone close to him in order to sabotage the Miles hire.  Under that theory, Herbie got bad info that he had every reason to beleive was good.  That makes more sense then him just making shiz up for his first breaking news story of his career.

I am looking forward to the search bits today.  I thought the backroom chatter last night was pretty negative, so I'm interested in hearing if Brian knows what got Ira excited.  Sounds like about 90% of the positive chatter is coming from Jack who was the middle man until just recently.  Maybe the positive vibes this morning stem from info leaked about the direct contact that was made.

People were surprised to hear that Jack was the source of most positive news bits and that he was acting as the go between.  Many people had assumed there was a face to face already (still no 100% concensus if there has been and when).  I think a lot of people were also worried that the positive swell didn't lead to a hire.  Basically worried that if it gets to the 29th the NFL offers will be too much to refuse.

Unless SF fires him. SF can work out a trade deal with Jim and that is what I'm worried about. Since they will be asking Jim what team he would like to go to, then negotiate a trade for some draft picks. But Jim could leave for Michigan before the trade negotiations begin! That's why if  he is going to come it will be right at the end of the season. However, if it drags onto January, then I think Jim will be traded to a team he wants to coach. So, our  only chance is if Jim arrives here by the end of December.

from the edge of the Internet and concerned whether all the optimistic reports have a common denominator in Jack Harbaugh.  The pessimists were speculating that he's biased because he wants it to happen, and that any report is suspect without corroboration from another source.  But to the best of my knowledge no one was able to say for sure that it's solely coming from him, so I think it was a lot glass half empty stuff.

Victors for Harbaugh

I don't have the points to make a thread, but Hunter Lochmann has "resigned" after his comments the other day. Will be announced this morning, and could someone please make the thread for me? Thank you.

I think the biggest reason for optimism is that Jim Harbaugh himself has not publicly said "no". Other than that nobody really knows and sooo many people have soooo many "sources" that it probably means we (*general public) are the sources.

That Raiders players, current, former, practice squad... Would say Jim isn't a "good fit" to guide their organization back to relevance. All Harbaugh has ever done is win, even this season they're still a .500 team with a top 5 defense that has the ability to beat just about any team in the league on any given Sunday despite all of the turmoil, lack of front office support, massive injuries on both sides of the ball and completely inept QB play. The last sound decision they made was drafting Chuck 17 years ago. Unless you enjoy jokes made in poor taste like myself, then it was burying Al Davis.

The first coaching search was conducted by an AD more concerned about his upcoming vacation/retirement.

The second coaching search was conducted by an AD more concerned about the "brand"/revenue than results. Oh, and the "Michigan Man/Michigan Way" meme.

This coaching search is being conducted by an interim AD who is trying to retain the position at some level of permanence, and who has made everything thus far appear seemless.

Id say it's more than just a pipe dream, seeing how quickly other major programs made their big money coaching hires, while we seem to be waiting for the NFL season to end for ours...

Personally I don't get the people wanting to offer eight or ten year contracts. Why are we so sure Harbaugh couldn't fail here? Look at Rich Rodriguez in his last 8 years that he has been a coach, excluding Michigan, his record is 74-27, Harbaugh's record is 72-39. Obviously he is a great coach and should be the number one priority, but that doesn't mean we need to be offering a ten year contract.

The more I read about it, it sure seems like a mess trying to navigate the NFL process of moving to another team, particulaly with the "trade" scenario in place and with the Raiders potential move to LA, etc, etc,  It sure would seem convenient to be able to flip them all off and come home.

If he wants to stay in the NFL then he will figure it out.  But if he's grown weary from the bad situation that he just experienced, and the danger lurking for it to reoccur with today's pro athletes, I have to think that making a clean break to college, and getting the band back together, would start to sound pretty good ...
