James Earl Jones as the voice of CRISP would have been amazing. That lady was brutal. ("The credits you have entered are FOUR. If this is not correct...")
January 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
When did that stop? I started in 1996 and feel pretty confident it was all online?
January 17th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
CRISP was still around in the late '90s. I think the switch to Wolverine Access happened around 2000, but there might have been a transition period when you could use either ... can't recall. I know I used both in my time on campus.
January 17th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
The switch was made in spring/summer 2000.
I was a freshman in Fall 2000, and was the first class to only use Wolverine Access. My older sister even used CRISP to register for the Fall 2000 semester, but they made Wolverine Access live before the incoming students started registering. The switchover was immediate--there was no time when you could do both (or I would have tried it once, having heard all the stories about the CRISP lady).
Edit: The article shared below gave an exact date: June 6, 2000. And clarified that the CRISP lady (CRISP over the phone) existed between 1994 and 2000, and that CRISP before that was done using terminals and terminal operators.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
They started the switch around that time. When I was a freshman in '94, it was definitely CRISP. I think maybe my soph year, they rolled out online. I recall one of my more savvy roommates doing it that way. Might have even been 96 since I lived with those guys for two years. There was a time when CRISP and online were both active during a transition period.

CRISP with glacial waiting lines in freezing rain outside of Angell Hall, circa Winter 1993. That is some OG Michigan sheet right there. Darth Vader confirming my Pol Sci 303 selection would have been nice.

+1...
I remember that.
January 17th, 2023 at 12:27 PM ^
CRISP in the early 80's was a long line a Lorch Hall and some forms. It was one of the awful experiences you try not to remember.
January 17th, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
The phone lady wouldn't have worked because the phones in the dorms were still rotary phones.
January 17th, 2023 at 1:13 PM ^
I met a hottie in that Lorch Hall line, so there's that.

His narration of "The World's Greatest University" gives me chills every time! A voice for the ages. Darth Vader forever!

Chills. Every time.

We need JEJ to say...."Ryan, I am your Father!"
January 17th, 2023 at 10:01 AM ^
Would it not be more apropos to have it read aloud as, "Ryan, you are, and forever will be, my bitch?"
January 17th, 2023 at 10:30 AM ^
LOL, I can go with that. "Ryan, I am your Father, you little bitch!"
January 17th, 2023 at 1:14 PM ^
I think you may be getting your Sci-Fi movie universes mixed up...
January 17th, 2023 at 10:44 AM ^
JEJ saying "Who's your daddy?" would be hilarious.
January 17th, 2023 at 11:45 AM ^
I think "Ryan - we have you starting on 3rd base today" would work too
January 17th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
"Welcome back - we've been looking forward to your visit."
January 17th, 2023 at 12:53 PM ^
Now that would be awesome play that just before the coin toss!

THIS IS THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN! It gets me pumped every time he says it. Go Blue!!

i hated registering for classes that way. this generation has no idea what a giant headache that was.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:32 AM ^
I had to do some research on CRISP since I had no idea what you guys were talking about. Wolverine Access felt dated and was a pain in the ass to use, but jeez I couldn’t imagine using this system.

You didn’t miss much. It would be a long phone call to register for your classes. You’d use the keypad to enter in the code for the subject, the course number, the section number, and number of credits, and the CRISP lady would slowly guide you through the process. If you hit the wrong key, you had to redo it. I remember entering in the wrong number of credits a couple of times.
I don’t think there was a way of knowing if a section was full until you entered in your selection. I recall entering in a course correctly, all those stupid keys and then confirming it was correct - and then being told that it was full.
The whole thing was an ordeal and getting it done felt like a great accomplishment.
Naturally the CRISP lady’s voice was extra irritating. “Please hold on” … ugh. That voice is burned into my mind.
January 17th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
Not to mention there was a number you could press to DISENROLL!! Everyone was always terrified of accidentally pressing that. I think it might have been 9. The joke between me and my friends was how long our first attempt at CRISPing each semester would last before we hung up in frustration.
January 17th, 2023 at 12:40 PM ^
Talk about PIA's -- you young 'uns have no idea about registration in the 60s at Waterman Gym. It was so bad the gym got torn down.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Damn, I love that he's ours.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
He has always been loyal to UM, and I knew he would. I told you he would never consciously betray the University of Michigan!
January 17th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
I've heard it dozens of times, but his narration of the Michigan hype video still gives me chills. If you're a Michigan fan and that doesn't fire you up, I don't know what to say.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
Of course, loved JEJ as Darth Vader's voice.
Beyond legendary and iconic.
However, the first time I ever heard/saw the video at the Big House saying - -
"We are the best university in the world."
Mind blown.
Happy Birthday Mr. Jones - Lord Darth Vader.
Go Blue.

We have the voices of James Earl Jones, Carl Grapentine and Madonna. We truly are the greatest university in the world.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
An absolute legend. As a child he had a stutter so severe that he didn't speak for years, and he ended up having one of the most famous voices of all time. OF ALL TIME!
January 17th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
Not only iconic in Star Wars.. just think of another sporting movie.. “Field of Dreams”
My wishes for a very Happy Birthday and good health to fellow alum James Earl Jones.
Go Blue!

He also went to school about 3/4 of a mile from my cabin. Brethren Michigan.

James Earl Jones has to be the most famous person to have his/her roots in Manistee County.
Other folk with Manistee County roots (I once dated a gal who grew up in Onekama, so I heard a good bit about the County's history):
- Dave Campbell, Detroit Tiger (played a few games on the '68 squad) and U-M infielder, later had a long stint calling games on ESPN (1990s and 2000s).
- Gerald Ford's personal secretary when he was VP and President.
- Harriet Quimby, famous aviator. First US woman to be a pilot and first woman to fly across the English Channel.

Here's a link to the James Early Jones intro. It's a few years old - but, hasn't changed too much (if at all)...

Can just imagine what JEJ would say about Santa Ono after the new president took charge of Harbaugh's negotiations:
"The Force is strong with this one."
January 17th, 2023 at 12:46 PM ^
Ah, the force is strong with that one. Glad he's on our side!
Edit: Too slow by about 12 minutes... doh!

Are there any public pics of him wearing any U of M gear at all? Even a hat?
I cannot find anything.
