Happy 92nd Birthday James Earl Jones

Arguably the owner of the greatest voice in the entertainment world turns 92 today.

He never replaced the CRISP lady, but I'm fully onboard with him replacing Warde.

James Earl Jones as the voice of CRISP would have been amazing.  That lady was brutal.  ("The credits you have entered are FOUR.  If this is not correct...")

The switch was made in spring/summer 2000.

I was a freshman in Fall 2000, and was the first class to only use Wolverine Access. My older sister even used CRISP to register for the Fall 2000 semester, but they made Wolverine Access live before the incoming students started registering. The switchover was immediate--there was no time when you could do both (or I would have tried it once, having heard all the stories about the CRISP lady).

Edit: The article shared below gave an exact date: June 6, 2000. And clarified that the CRISP lady (CRISP over the phone) existed between 1994 and 2000, and that CRISP before that was done using terminals and terminal operators.

They started the switch around that time. When I was a freshman in '94, it was definitely CRISP. I think maybe my soph year, they rolled out online. I recall one of my more savvy roommates doing it that way. Might have even been 96 since I lived with those guys for two years. There was a time when CRISP and online were both active during a transition period.

You didn’t miss much.  It would be a long phone call to register for your classes.  You’d use the keypad to enter in the  code for the subject, the course number, the section number, and number of credits, and the CRISP lady would slowly guide you through the process.  If you hit the wrong key, you had to redo it.  I remember entering in the wrong number of credits a couple of times.

I don’t think there was a way of knowing if a section was full until you entered in your selection.  I recall entering in a course correctly, all those stupid keys and then confirming it was correct - and then being told that it was full.

The whole thing was an ordeal and getting it done felt like a great accomplishment.

Naturally the CRISP lady’s voice was extra irritating.  “Please hold on” … ugh.  That voice is burned into my mind.

I've heard it dozens of times, but his narration of the Michigan hype video still gives me chills. If you're a Michigan fan and that doesn't fire you up, I don't know what to say.

Of course, loved JEJ as Darth Vader's voice.

Beyond legendary and iconic.

However, the first time I ever heard/saw the video at the Big House saying - -

"We are the best university in the world."

Mind blown.

Happy Birthday Mr. Jones - Lord Darth Vader.

Go Blue.

An absolute legend.  As a child he had a stutter so severe that he didn't speak for years, and he ended up having one of the most famous voices of all time.  OF ALL TIME!

James Earl Jones has to be the most famous person to have his/her roots in Manistee County.

Other folk with Manistee County roots (I once dated a gal who grew up in Onekama, so I heard a good bit about the County's history):

  • Dave Campbell, Detroit Tiger (played a few games on the '68 squad) and U-M infielder, later had a long stint calling games on ESPN (1990s and 2000s).
  • Gerald Ford's personal secretary when he was VP and President.
  • Harriet Quimby, famous aviator.  First US woman to be a pilot and first woman to fly across the English Channel.

Can just imagine what JEJ would say about Santa Ono after the new president took charge of Harbaugh's negotiations:

"The Force is strong with this one."
