Detroit News article about Tony Grimes and his recruitment.
Yep, we're in the drivers seat for both Cullen Christian and Grimes. Long way to go but looking good so far with CB recruiting. Love both of their offer lists too.
didnt realize that the "Vlad Emilien on family values" post had the same link.... shit
I'm not mad at you
He IS missing an apostrophe in didn’t…
Honest mistake. No big deal.
It’s a similar post, but different.
This is good news. We need Christian and Grimes to commit to sure up our defensive backfield a little bit.
If we could land Grimes and Christian, that would be an impressive CB haul for our coaching staff. I like that both of them are big and love to hit apparently.
Add Iffil at Free Safety...
SS M. Robinson
FS Iffil
CB Grimes
CB Christian
CB Avery
Keep a spot open for Safety Sean Parker if he wants it...
Not bad.
Do you guys think RR is going to cold shoulder some recruits who are kind of "meh" players like he did last year? If we start to haul in higher rated players at positions of need, do you think we should attempt to drop some commits when we start to max out our scholarship availability? I know some of you are against this, but in the nature of recruiting these days, it seems inevitable. If so, who do you forsee going?
We'd need to get higher rated recruits before anyone gets bumped out. That being said, I've maintained for a while that not all of our WRs (Williamson, Dileo, Drake, Robinson, Miller) will remain committed - or at the same position - before the cycle is over.
I would guess Williams, Dileo, and Drake will be judged by how they play their senior years. Weren't there words that the coaches weren't that impressed with Barnes' play last year and that's why they cooled on him? Or maybe that was/is just the way the coaches do things.
Agreed, its a bit early right now. I just feel that in the new realm of the earlier recruiting process, and RR's shotgun approach, that there are always going to be those who jump at the chance to play for their favorite team. The more highly rated recruits tend to take their time because they assume most staffs will make room for them in their recruiting classes. I think we got a little commit happy early on, and a few of those taken were almost brought in as safety pick-ups due to our poor showing in the season last year. If RR can use his charm/snake oil to sell highly rated recruits that this is a building process and something special is coming, he will need a bit more time and a much improved season. I feel we'll do to some as we did to Jordan Barnes and Dwayne Peace. My guess is also aimed at the WR position or our new Deathbacker/Wolfman positions of which we seem overloaded at.
Magnus, do you really include Ricardo Miller in that group?
Do I include him in the list of five wide receivers who are currently committed? Yes. Why wouldn't I?
Ricardo. He might take officials but a family doesn't move 20+ hours away for nothing.
He never said he thought Ricardo would decommit. He said one of the WR might decommit, then listed all the WRs in this class.
If I say "One of these numbers is an odd number (2, 4, 5, 6, 8) doesn't mean I think that 4 or 6 is an odd number.
Really? I think 4 is a pretty strange number.
and don't even get me started on 6.
Well, in Mandarin. I live at the edge of Chinatown in Toronto, and many of the condos going up nearby don't have fourth or 14th floors.
One... is the loneliest.
he didn't list all the receivers in this class unless Jeremy Jackson switched positions. Secondly, why include Ricardo Miller in a sentence about WR's who might not end up at UM if Ricardo is definitely going to sign with us?
EDIT: Sorry, I just had the same concerns as Biakabatuka did below.
I assumed that you were listing the wr's that you thought might decommit or change positions. I think I came to that conclusion because Jackson was not listed.
Do you view him more as a TE or was that just an oversite by not listing him?
I have no idea what RR and staff are going to do, but I sincerely hope they don't push anyone out the door because someone better comes along.
One thing you need to remember is that Rich Rod's rankings are not necessarily the same rankings as you would find on scout and rivals.
For fans it is nice to see the 5 stars rack up, and generally they do have talent. But our coaching staff is especially good at finding quality players. So what may be a "meh" 3 star player on the scout/rivals board may be a 5 star quality guy for Rich Rod.
We all know the examples of guys like Braylon Edwards, AJ Hawk and Pat White's of the world being labeled at 2 to 3 star players who come in to be all stars. I would much rather have a team full of 3 star braylon type players, than a team full of 5 star players that win us recruit ranking titles but end up doing jack on the field.
"I would much rather have a team full of 3 star braylon type players, than a team full of 5 star players that win us recruit ranking titles but end up doing jack on the field."
I don't think you're really going out on a limb with that one–pretty sure every single person on this board would choose the same thing.
I think we have some really good options for DB's....
we already have Avery and Robinson... and I feel like we still have legitimate chances with...
Dior Mathis
Tony Grimes
Rashad Knight
Cullen Christian
Brandon Ifill
Sean Parker
Latwan Anderson
Josh Furman
Nickell Robey
and there's Travis Williams if all of the above fail....
looks good to me
With Avery in the fold, I (as an uninformed observer) would imagine that the coaches are also counting on Cullen Cristian and would like a third corner, but would prefer Mathis or Knight over Grimes. No?
Any news on Knight? I haven't heard anything about him for a while?
Knight could play both safety or CB, and i think we still lead for him.
Assuming we get Christian and Grimes, would it have been better to get Knight instead of Avery? If I'm not mistaken, Knight is supposed to be pretty high on Michigan, right? Is Avery that good, or is RR willing to fill out the roster spots and not risk getting burned on signing day?
I don't think Rich Rod has any problem with taking as many as four CBs in this class.
RR has been on Christian's case since day one, so I believe he'll come to Michigan. But I sure like both these Florida guys.
We currently have 16 commits, only one of which is a CB. Four CBs would put us at 19, which doesn't include a couple more OL, a couple DL, a couple LB, and at least one more safety. Things are getting tight.
It's possible that he would take four corners if one or two of them have position flexibility (like Christian or Knight) to move to safety, but he won't take four Dior Mathises.
We're short on cornerbacks, but we're not losing any after this year.
I think we would take four with the thought of moving one over to safety. It is possible that Justin Turner eventually ends up at safety as well. I'm not at all optimistic about our Dline recruiting. This might be a problem that continues into the 2011 class.
"I'm not at all optimistic about our Dline recruiting. "
I, for one, am shocked. :P
said it was 50/50
I'm thinking we'll take a full class, right? There probably be more transfers(slot position), plus we don't have to give some guys 5th years.
It's hard to predict if there will be any transfers. Guys like Cone and Wright might not get fifth years, but that only puts us at 22 (off the top of my head). It will take some transfers or career-ending injuries to get to 25 (and no, I'm not wishing for career-ending injuries).
If a couple kids enroll early, we can shift them to last years class, correct? That could open up a few spots...
Doesn't affect overall scholarship count number. Early enrollees will affect the current class' number, which I believe can't exceed 27. Of course, the previous class number can't be greater than 27. Still on track to hit the 85 scholarship limit regardless.
It wouldn't because we still can only have 85 players on scholarship. Edit: Late.
why freaking out about Mathis because he's an OMG IN-STATE RECRUIT is crazy. We have plenty of choices...Grimes, Knight, Christian...all of whom are greater than or equal to Mathis in ability. Any of the 4 would be awesome and we probably only need 2 of them with Avery already aboard. We have done awesome recruiting CB's the last handful of years going back to Warren, Cissoko, and Turner.
I agree, but lets just hope Turner qualifies and sees the field...
This is one of the other CBs Georgia is feeling good about their chances with. If they begin to lose favor with Riggs they will come even harder after Grimes. I didn't realize he was a NSD commitment as well.
the people who are "We need Dior or bust" are a little misinformed. Of Cullen, Grimes, Knight and Dior I take the other three. But that's just me, I'm not taking a guy just because he is from the state if his ability is in any way inferior.
I just wish that comments like this would get more play in the press:
"I was with Vladimir (Emilien)," Grimes said of his time in Ann Arbor. "That's my boy. He told me one difference (at Michigan) is once you get there, you are not just a piece of meat, you are a part of the family."
